Chronic active Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is an uncommon outcome of EBV infection and may present as a waxing and waning or fulminant syndrome. Unlike acute infectious mononucleosis, wherein EBV establishes lifelong infection and survives by maintaining a delicate balance with the host as a latent infection, in chronic active EBV infection the host-virus balance is disturbed. The mechanisms by which this balance becomes perturbed are likely to be heterogenous and may involve host immune factors, viral factors, or both. A number of subtle immunologic defects have been reported in patien

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is one of eight human herpesviruses and is ubiquitous. Primary infection with EBV in childhood is generally silent, but often causes overt diseases such as infectious mononucleosis (IM) and lymphoproliferative disorders (LPD). The latter occurs in immunologically compromised individuals. Historically, EBV has been thought to be aetiologically linked to human malignancies such as EBV genome-positive Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Furthermore, studies using recent developments in molecular and immunological diagnostic approaches have suggeste

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was isolated 40 years ago from cultures of Burkitt lymphoma cells (BL). The tumor was encountered in Africa and exhibited characteristical geographical, clinical and pathological features. Serological studies revealed that the virus is ubiquitous in humans. The primary infection is often accompanied by the syndrome of acute infectious mononucleosis (IM). It can induce malignant proliferation of B lymphocytes in conditions of immunodeficiency. EBV can immortalize B lymphocytes in culture. These cells carry the virus as episomes and express 9 virally encoded proteins

Several diseases was associated with Epstein Barr virus (EBV) infection. In the next three cases, the clinical course was unusual . Case I: Polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia, female 47 years old, she had systemic lupus erythematosus and clinical data of infectious mononucleosis but she evolved to a polyclonal gammopathy with IgM predominantly against EBV. Case II: Demyelinating encephalitis, male, 32 years old with central neurological alterations, IgM antibodies against EBV and demyelinating lesion in magnetic resonance image in brain steam. Case III. Villous leukoplakia, male, 40 years old d

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is an exclusively human herpes virus which is recognised as the causative agent of infectious mononucleosis and which is implicated in the aetiology of several cancers. However, it is particularly remarkable that this virus is harboured without causing symptoms for the lifetime of most immunocompetent adults. Virus and host have co-evolved over millions of years, achieving a balance between viral persistence and immune control. It is this dynamic equilibrium which is the focus of this review. The main site of viral persistence is within latently infected lymphocytes, a

The Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) causes infectious mononucleosis, and has been strongly associated with certain human cancers. The virus is thought to exclusively bind to B lymphocytes and epithelial cells via receptors (CR2/CD21) that also interact with fragments of the third component of complement (C3). Recent evidence, however, has challenged this belief. We have used two-color immunofluorescence analysis using biotin-conjugated EBV and streptavidin-phycoerythrin along with fluorescein-conjugated anti-T cell antibodies and demonstrated that CD1-positive, CD3-dull (immature) human thymocytes ex

The 103 serum samples have been examined for the presence of the specific antibodies against Epstein-Barr virus (EBV): IgG and IgM antibodies to viral capsid antigen (VCA), antibodies to nuclear antigen (EBNA) and antibodies to early antigen (EA). Sixty nine studied sera belonged to patients with suspected infective mononucleosis (IM) while other sera were sent with the diagnosis which could be associated with EBV infections. The results obtained have suggested the necessity of examinations of EBV markers in all states suspected of EBV infection.

A 11 month-old boy, without any informative familial pedigree, was admitted for peritonitis after intestinal perforation, associated with signs of pseudolymphoma and histiocytic activation. He developed later unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding and interstitial pneumonitis, which spontaneously improved. All infectious and immunologic studies were negative. Epstein-Barr Virus was found in throat, lungs and blood, whereas the specific antibodies production was delayed. No abnormality was detected 18 months later, except for a disappearance of vaccinal antibodies.

Antibodies to Epstein-Barr (EB) virus capsid antigen and EB virus complement fixing antibodies were estimated in sera from 23 children and 27 young adults with infectious mononucleosis, and in 79 control patients. Complement fixing antibodies, but not those to virus capsid antigen, were much lower in patients tested during acute infectious mononucleosis than in controls. It is suggested that this disparity could form the basis of a diagnostic test. Anomalous results, in which the EB virus antibody pattern suggested active infection though heterophile antibodies and/or abnormal white blood cell

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) are Herpesviridae. Although infections are often subclinical, HSV can cause mild to severe diseases, especially in immunocompromised patients. EBV infections are also often asymptomatic but this virus may be associated to carcinoma in immunocompetent patients and to severe diseases in immunocompromised patients. These viruses establish latency, in neuronal cells for HSV and in B-cells for EBV, and may reactivate, with or without symptoms. There are few drugs licensed for the treatment of HSV infections. Most of them target the viral DNA p
