Geographical distribution and species identification of human filariasis and onchocerciasis in Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea.

Human filariae are vector-borne parasites and the causative agents of various diseases, including human onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis. Onchocerciasis causes a spectrum of cutaneous and ophthalmologic manifestations (including blindness) and has long been a major public health problem in Bioko Island (Equatorial Guinea). Bioko Island has been included in the WHO's Onchocerciasis Control Program since 1987. In Bioko Island, the specificity and sensitivity of clinical Onchocerca volvulus diagnosis is key. The objective of this work was to update onchocerciasis elimination progress in Bi

Spatial and temporal variability of the Glossina palpalis palpalis population in the Mbini focus (Equatorial Guinea).

BACKGROUND: Human African Trypanosomiasis is a vector-borne parasitic disease. The geographical distribution of the disease is linked to the spatial distribution of the tsetse fly. As part of a control campaign using traps, the spatial and temporal variability is analysed of the glossina populations present in the Mbini sleeping sickness foci (Equatorial Guinea). RESULTS: A significant drop in the annual mean of the G. p. palpalis apparent density was noted from 2004 to 2005, although seasonal differences were not observed. The apparent density (AD) of G. p. palpalis varies significantly from

Impact of different strategies to control Plasmodium infection and anaemia on the island of Bioko (Equatorial Guinea).

BACKGROUND: On the island of Bioko (Equatorial Guinea), insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) have been the main tool used to control malaria over the last 13 years. In 2004, started an indoor residual spraying (IRS) campaign to control malaria. The purpose of this study is to asses the impact of the two control strategies on the island of Bioko (Equatorial Guinea), with regards to Plasmodium infection and anaemia in the children under five years of age. METHODS: Two transversal studies, the first one prior to the start of the IRS campaign and the second one year later. Sampling was carried out by

Regular Plasmodium falciparum importation onto Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, hampers malaria elimination from the island.

The Bioko Island Malaria Elimination Project (BIMEP) has made significant progress in reducing the prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea. However, like other malaria endemic islands like São Tomé and Principe and Zanzibar, Tanzania, elimination efforts are hampered by imported infections. In an effort to understand the local transmission dynamics and the influence of importation on Bioko Island's P. falciparum population, whole-genome sequences were generated from field samples collected during the BIMEP's 2019 Malaria Indicator Survey (MIS). Within the sub-Sah

Evaluation of onchocerciasis seroprevalence in Bioko Island (Equatorial Guinea) after years of disease control programmes.

BACKGROUND: Onchocerciasis or "river blindness" is a chronic parasitic disease caused by the filarial worm Onchocerca volvulus, transmitted through infected blackflies (Simulium spp.). Bioko Island (Equatorial Guinea) used to show a high endemicity for onchocerciasis. During the last years, the disease control programmes using different larvicides and ivermectin administration have considerably reduced the prevalence and intensity of infection. Based on this new epidemiological scenario, in the present work we aimed to assess the impact of the strategies applied against onchocerciasis in Bioko

The elimination of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense sleeping sickness in the focus of Luba, Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea.

After the resurgence of sleeping sickness in Luba, Equatorial Guinea, a major campaign to control the disease was established in 1985. The campaign comprised no vector control, but intensive active and passive surveillance using serology for screening, and treatment of all parasitological and suspected serological cases. Total prevalence was used to classify villages as endemic, at risk, anecdotal and non-endemic which also allowed defining the geographic extent of the focus. Active case-finding was implemented from 1985 to 2004. The frequency of surveys was based on parasitological prevalence

African trypanosomiasis and S. intercalatum infection in Equatorial Guinea: comparative epidemiology and feasibility of integrated control.

The integration of schistosomiasis control with the activities of different endemic disease control or health programmes has been endorsed by a WHO Expert Committee on the Control of Schistosomiasis (WHO 1985). Endemic countries face increasing economic and manpower constraints which limit the coverage and effectiveness of control activities. Integration would be expected to optimize available resources for control. The feasibility of integration can be assessed by a comparative evaluation of: the epidemiology and distribution of the health problems; the techniques and methodology of control;

Interruption of onchocerciasis transmission in Bioko Island: Accelerating the movement from control to elimination in Equatorial Guinea.

BACKGROUND: Onchocerciasis, also known as river blindness, is a parasitic disease. More than 99 percent of all cases occur in Africa. Bioko Island (Equatorial Guinea) is the only island endemic for onchocerciasis in the world. Since 2005, when vector Simulium yahense was eliminated, there have not been any reported cases of infection. This study aimed to demonstrate that updated WHO criteria for stopping mass drug administration (MDA) have been met. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from September 2016 to January 2017. Participants were 5- to 9-year-old sch

Adapting malaria indicator surveys to investigate treatment adherence: a pilot study on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to anti-malarial treatment regimens is an important aspect of understanding and improving the impact of malaria case management. However, both adherence to artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) and the factors driving it vary widely. While many other evaluation activities have been conducted on Bioko Island, until now adherence to anti-malarial treatments, and in particular ACT has not been evaluated. METHODS: The implementation of a malaria indicator survey (MIS) conducted on Bioko in 2023 was leveraged to evaluate adherence to ACT provided to individuals testing

Molecular Surveillance of Artemisinin-Based Combination Therapies Resistance in Plasmodium falciparum Parasites from Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea.

Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) resistance has emerged and could be diffusing in Africa. As an offshore island on the African continent, the island of Bioko in Equatorial Guinea is considered severely affected and resistant to drug-resistant Plasmodium falciparum malaria. However, the spatial and temporal distribution remain unclear. Molecular monitoring targeting the Pfcrt, Pfk13, Pfpm2, and Pfmdr1 genes was conducted to provide insight into the impact of current antimalarial drug resistance on the island. Furthermore, polymorphic characteristics, haplotype network, and the eff

Measuring the accuracy of gridded human population density surfaces: A case study in Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea.

BACKGROUND: Geospatial datasets of population are becoming more common in models used for health policy. Publicly-available maps of human population make a consistent picture from inconsistent census data, and the techniques they use to impute data makes each population map unique. Each mapping model explains its methods, but it can be difficult to know which map is appropriate for which policy work. High quality census datasets, where available, are a unique opportunity to characterize maps by comparing them with truth. METHODS: We use census data from a bed-net mass-distribution campaign on
