The AI-augmented researcher: Optimizing systematic reviews in ergonomics.

BackgroundThe emergence of Academic Artificial Intelligence (AAI) agents is reshaping Systematic Literature Reviews (SLR) by expanding evidence screening and synthesis beyond Boolean, metadata-based searches, but its use requires a clear, PRISMA-aligned human oversight model to avoid compromising research integrity.ObjectiveThis opinion article proposes the "AI-augmented researcher" as a multidimensional framework that synergizes human analytical rigor with Large Language Models (LLMs). Using a physical ergonomics case study, the paper establishes a normative integration strategy that demonstr

Ergonomics in the Operating Room: Recommendations for Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Orthopaedic surgeons face notable occupational hazards, including suboptimal ergonomics in the operating room (OR). This results in high rates of musculoskeletal injuries that affect at least four in 10 orthopaedic surgeons. Sex disparities exacerbate these issues, with female surgeons reporting markedly higher rates of occupational injuries and discomfort with surgical instrument use compared with male surgeons. Factors such as sustained nonergonomic positions, poor instrument design, improper OR setups, and forceful and repetitive movements contribute to these injuries. With upward of one in

Ergonomics in Dermatological Surgery: An International Survey Among Dermatologists.

There is a high prevalence of musculoskeletal pain among dermatological surgeons, particularly in the neck, upper and lower back, and shoulders. We performed an international survey which revealed a lack of ergonomic education and use of ergonomic tools in dermatological surgery. Most respondents were aware of bad posture during surgery, but few regularly checked their posture. Behavioural interventions, such as alternating between standing and sitting, and taking frequent breaks, are recommended to reduce pain. Ergonomic workstation adaptations, including the use of surgical loupes, good ligh

Robotic-assisted Proximal Perineal Urethroplasty: Improving Visualization and Ergonomics.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the use of the robotic platform for proximal suture placement during perineal urethroplasty in the posterior and proximal anterior urethra. Repair of posterior urethral and proximal bulbar strictures requires deep perineal dissection, making visualization and accurate placement of sutures challenging. The robotic platform has demonstrated benefits in these characteristics in deep pelvic surgery. METHODS: We report a retrospective review of 10 patients who underwent robotic-assisted urethroplasty at a single institution by a single surgeon in a 1 year period. All patient

Surgeon Strength: Ergonomics and Strength Training in Cardiothoracic Surgery.

With the high prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in surgeons and interventionalists, it is critical to analyze the impact of ergonomics on cardiothoracic surgeon health. Here, we review the existing literature and propose recommendations to improve physical preparedness for surgery both in and outside the operating room. For decades, cardiothoracic surgeons have suffered from musculoskeletal pain, most commonly in the neck, and back due to a lack of proper ergonomics during surgery. A lack of dedicated ergonomics curriculum during training may leave surgeons at a high predisposition for work-r

[Management of non-specific musculoskeletal disorders--role of ergonomics].

Non-specific musculoskeletal disorders are a major health problem. Despite good prognosis socio-economic burden is important. Just a few treatment strategies are known to reduce work-disability. An early ergonomic assessment helps to determine the level of disability and further rehabilitation strategies. An assessment consists of a self-rating of the physical capacities and a physical performance test. Work-place demands and psychosocial factors should also be considered by interview. An ergonomic work-place analysis supports this information and facilitates reintegration. Furthermore, work-p

An evaluation of the ergonomics of three computer keyboards.

The influence of keyboard design on hand position, typing productivity and keyboard preference was evaluated by comparing two segmented alternative designs with the linear standard keyboard. The FIXED alternative keyboard featured a split angle of 12 degrees and a moderate lateral inclination angle of 10 degrees. The adjustable OPEN alternative keyboard was used with a 15 degrees split setting, which resulted in a marked 42 degrees of demiboard lateral inclination. Sixteen typists, who completed 10 h of training on both alternative keyboards, were videotaped while typing set texts on all three

Applied ergonomics: adaptive equipment and instrument modification for musicians.

Failure or difficulty in treating musicians' overuse injuries is often due to overlooking aggravating roles of activities of daily living. Numerous devices are available for people with limited or painful hand function to protect joints and minimize stress of daily activities. The occupational therapist can evaluate the patient and determine which adaptations are appropriate. Instruments may be modified to render them more ergonomic and less likely to cause injuries; this is especially true for wind instruments. Biomechanically and ergonomically correct seating can minimize back and neck strai
