Prevalence of antibodies to Brucella spp. and risk factors related to high-risk occupational groups in Eritrea.

In a study of three high-risk occupational groups using Rose Bengal and complement fixation tests, the highest prevalence (7.1%) was found among dairy farm workers and owners in randomly selected dairy-cattle farms, followed by veterinary personnel (4.5%) and inhabitants in pastoralist areas (3.0%). There was no evidence for significant differences between the three populations. Among dairy farm workers, a higher risk was associated with the presence of sheep in the farm (OR = 13.2, CI = 2.2-76.7). In the pastoral area, a high risk was linked to having close contact with animals (OR = 6.32, CI

Screening for antifolate and artemisinin resistance in Plasmodium falciparum dried-blood spots from three hospitals of Eritrea.

BACKGROUND: Antimalarial drug resistance is a major challenge hampering malaria control and elimination. About three-quarters of Eritrea's population resides in the malaria-endemic western lowlands of the country. Plasmodium falciparum, the leading causative parasite species, has developed resistance to basically all antimalarials. Continued surveillance of drug resistance using genetic markers provides important molecular data for treatment policies which complements clinical studies, and strengthens control efforts. This study sought to genotype point mutations associated with P. falciparum

Prevalence of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, cytomegalovirus, and varicella-zoster virus infections in Eritrea.

BACKGROUND: Herpesviruses establish latent infections in their hosts for life. The scarcity of data that exists in regard to herpesvirus infections in many African regions, could partly be due to the mild nature of their primary infections and the lack of means for their proper diagnosis. However, in recent decades the alarming spread of HIV infection in Africa and associated frequent reactivation of herpesvirus infections is leaving less room for neglect. This seroprevalence study is intended to help in the evaluation of the prevalence of herpesvirus infections in Eritrea. OBJECTIVE: To eval

Genetic variants associated with reduced body size in indigenous chickens of Eritrea: A genome-wide association study.

Indigenous chickens in Eritrea are raised mainly in low-input village systems and show marked variation in body size, including reduced body size phenotype, a trait associated with reduced feed consumption, thermotolerance, disease resistance, and adaptability to resource-limited environments. This study aimed to identify genomic regions associated with reduced body size using a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in Eritrean chicken ecotypes. Blood samples from 384 ICs across 16 ecotypes (21 to 24 birds per ecotype) were genotyped using DArTseq technology. Three putative short-bodied ecotype

Purification and properties of antimicrobial peptides from skin secretions of the Eritrea clawed frog Xenopus clivii (Pipidae).

Five peptides with antimicrobial activity were isolated from norepinephrine-stimulated skin secretions of the tetraploid frog Xenopus clivii Peracca, 1898 (Pipidae). Characterization of the peptides demonstrated that they are structurally similar to magainins (2 peptides), caerulein-precursor fragments, CPF (2 peptides), and xenopsin-precursor fragments, XPF (1 peptide) that have been previously isolated from other species of the genus Xenopus. The magainins and the XPF peptide were active only against the Gram-negative microorganism Escherichia coli whereas the CPF peptides were also active a

The elephants of Zoba Gash Barka, Eritrea: part 4. Cholelithiasis in a wild African elephant (Loxodonta africana).

A 4.0-kg cholelith was found within the abdominal cavity of a dead wild African elephant (Loxodonta africana) in Eritrea. Analysis of this cholelith by histochemistry, electron microscopy, electrospray mass spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy revealed it was composed of bile alcohols but no calcium, bilirubin, or cholesterol. Bacteria were also found in the cholelith. Similar, but smaller, bile stones have been identified previously in other wild African elephants and an excavated mammoth (Mammuthus columbi). Choleliths have been reported only once in a captive Asian elephan

Quality of life of dermatology outpatients and its associated factors in Halibet National Referral Hospital in Asmara, Eritrea.

Skin diseases are prevalent globally and can have detrimental effects on the individual's health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The treatment of dermatological patients typically focuses on clinical signs and symptoms and a subjective view of the impact of the disease on the patient's life. Assessing quality of life can help provide patients with better service, by acknowledging their real needs and interfering with treatment decisions. The aim of the study was therefore to assess quality of life of dermatology outpatients and its associated factors. An analytical cross-sectional study was c

The spread of molecular markers of artemisinin partial resistance and diagnostic evasion in Eritrea: a retrospective molecular epidemiology study.

BACKGROUND: Eritrea was the first African country to discontinue the use of histidine rich protein 2 (HRP2)-detecting rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for malaria diagnosis following reports of a high prevalence of pfhrp2/3-deleted Plasmodium falciparum parasites causing false-negative results in the country. Eritrea was also the first African country to report partial artemisinin resistance due to the P falciparum kelch13 (pfk13) Arg622Ile mutation. We aimed to characterise the spatial distribution of pfk13 mutants and their interactions with pfhrp2/3 deletions in Eritrea and to assess the role

INTRODUCTION: Delivery of fetus in breech presentation is a controversial topic in obstetrics and it had been the subject of debate since 1980s. As experts with abilities and know-how to perform vaginal breech delivery have decreased, and medico legal concerns increased, some physicians endorse cesarean section for breech presentation at term. The aim of this study was to identify the perinatal outcome in vaginal breech deliveries. METHODOLOGY: This study was a retrospective case control study of mothers delivered vaginally between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2023 in Orotta National Refe
