The hypothesis is that the pathogenesis of attacks of anxiety, panic or frenzy (hyperactive disorders) rests on the abnormal activation of the same brain-controlled survival mechanism, and that the subsequent depression is part of this nosological continuum. The acute activation phase would be the counterpart of two principal types of reaction to threat and imminent attack: run-for-life or fight-for-life, sub-served by brain-controlled metabolic activation to make energy available for either. The phase of depression that follows would represent the recovery phase during which homeostatic contr

Although visually elicited behaviors have been extensively studied in crabs, their investigation at the neurophysiological level is scant. The present study is a physiological and morphological description of intracellularly recorded and dye injected visual movement detector neurons that respond to the same stimulus that elicits the escape response in the crab Chasmagnathus granulatus. The neurons were investigated in intact animals. The response of movement detector neurons to the danger stimulus (an object moving above the animal) consists of a strong discharge of action potentials frequentl

Aggression has been previously correlated with impulsive personality. In the present study, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS) scores of 40 male controls aged 15-40 years were related to the frequency of free-operant aggressive and escape responses toward a fictitious antagonist. Participants earned "points" worth money with repeated button presses on a fixed-ratio schedule and were provoked by the periodic subtraction of a point. These subtractions were blamed on the behavior of a (fictitious) other participant, and aggressive responses (presses of a separate button) were defined as those emit

The carbon-layer-induced intermediate escape confinement effect improves electrocatalytic C-C coupling by reducing the diffusion of C1 intermediates, thereby maintaining a high local concentration of these intermediates. Guided by finite element analysis simulations, CuSn(OH)6@C was synthesized with varying carbon layer thicknesses. The findings demonstrate that the thickness of the carbon layer significantly influences the diffusion behavior of C1 intermediates within the catalyst's internal space during the CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR). A catalyst with a defective carbon layer measu

Putative command neurones of snail's escape behaviour reacted with excitatory postsynaptic potentials and spikes to tactile, vestibular, light-off and thermal stimuli evoking behavioural escape reactions. Presented data confirm the command function of identified neurones. No monosynaptic connections have been revealed between intracellularly recorded primary cells of the statocyst and command neurones, but it has been shown that command neurones reacted to strong stimulation of the acoustic nerve. Presence of second-order sensory neurones in the vestibular pathway was assumed.

Panic attacks present a high comorbidity with agoraphobia, separation anxiety and generalized anxiety disorder. Nevertheless, while panic attacks have been frequently equated to fear, the relationship of panic disorder with specific phobias remains uncertain. The combination of experimental models of panic and phobias could but afford valuable information about both the comorbidity and causation of these disorders. As it regards, while the defensive behaviors produced by stimulation of dorsal periaqueductal gray matter (DPAG) resemble a panic attack, resistance to capture (RC) behaviors that e

Solvent cage-escape dynamics of bimolecular photoredox products in solution has been investigated computationally through a combination of molecular dynamics simulations and quantum chemical calculations. The present work focuses on the photoinduced oxidation of the organic electron donor dimethylaniline (DMA) by a Fe(III) N-heterocyclic carbene photosensitizer (Fe(III)NHC+) in two different solvents, serving as an example of current interest due to their relevance for the development of earth-abundant photocatalytic systems. Calculated solvent cage-escape yields of radical-cation and neutral

Blood-sucking horseflies (tabanids) prefer warmer (sunlit, darker) host animals and generally attack them in sunshine, the reason for which was unknown until now. Recently, it was hypothesized that blood-seeking female tabanids prefer elevated temperatures, because their wing muscles are quicker and their nervous system functions better at a warmer body temperature brought about by warmer microclimate, and thus they can more successfully avoid the host's parasite-repelling reactions by prompt takeoffs. To test this hypothesis, we studied in field experiments the success rate of escape reaction

Biomarkers are frequently used in ecotoxicology as they allow to study toxicant effects happening at low concentrations of exposure. However, most sublethal studies only evaluate cellular biomarkers which lack evident ecological relevance. We used a multibiomarker approach to estimate the toxic effects of ethoprophos, an organophosphate insecticide commonly used in banana plantations, on the tropical fish Astyanax aeneus (Characidae). We measured biomarkers at sub-individual (cellular) and individual (metabolism, behavior) levels and examined relationships among these responses. A sublethal ex

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface gene variants have been associated with diagnostic escape and immune escape following vaccination. The most common mutation observed in these variants is a glycine-to-arginine substitution at amino acid 145 (G145R). In order to sensitively detect the presence of this mutant in serum, a new molecular detection system was developed; in this new system, a gap ligase chain reaction (gLCR) assay was coupled with electrochemiluminescence detection of reaction products. The gLCR assay could detect approximately 10 copies of mutant DNA and could discriminate low levels

It has not been verified whether allopurinol application is beneficial in decreasing the severity of radiation-induced oral mucositis and dermatitis. Rats were divided into 4 groups and received 15 Gy irradiation on the left whisker pad. Group 1 received only irradiation. Group 2 was maintained by applying allopurinol/carrageenan-mixed gel (allopurinol gel) continuously from 2 days before to 20 days after irradiation. Group 3 had allopurinol gel applied for 20 days after radiation. Group 4 was maintained by applying carrageenan gel continuously from 2 days before to 20 days after irradiation.

Escape behavior is a set of locomotor actions that move an animal away from threat. While these actions can be stereotyped, it is advantageous for survival that they are flexible.1,2,3 For example, escape probability depends on predation risk and competing motivations,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 and flight to safety requires continuous adjustments of trajectory and must terminate at the appropriate place and time.12,13,14,15,16 This degree of flexibility suggests that modulatory components, like inhibitory networks, act on the neural circuits controlling instinctive escape.17,18,19,20,21,22 In mice, the

The ability of predators to adopt hunting tactics that minimise escape reactions from prey is crucial for efficient foraging, and depends on detection capabilities and locomotor performance of both predators and prey. Here, we investigated the efficiency of a small pinniped, the Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) at exploiting their small prey by describing for the first time their fine-scale predator-prey interactions. We compared these with those from another diving predator, the southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina) that forage on the same prey type. We used data recorded by a n

The objective was to determine associations between behavior during head-lock restraint and reproductive performance in dairy heifers. Behavior of 817 Holstein heifers from four farms was evaluated at feeding (Days 0 and 7) while restrained in a self-locking stanchion. All heifers were assigned a body condition score (BCS; 1, emaciated to 5, obese) on Day 0. Heifers were timed-inseminated on a maximum of three occasions to determine impact of behavior for first service pregnancy per AI (FS-P/AI) and cumulative P/AI (C-P/AI). Ovulation was synchronized with an Ovsynch synchronization protocol f

Escape behaviour is the behaviour that birds and other animals display when already caught by a predator. An individual exhibiting higher intensity of such anti-predator behaviour could have greater probabilities of escape from predators. Parasites are known to affect different aspects of host behaviour to increase their own fitness. Vector-transmitted parasites such as malaria parasites should gain by manipulating their hosts to enhance the probability of transmission. Several studies have shown that malaria parasites can manipulate their vectors leading to increased transmission success. How

According to cognitive models of anxiety, anxiety patients exhibit an early reflexive attentional bias toward threat stimuli, which may be followed by intentional avoidance of these stimuli. To determine the time course of attentional vigilance and avoidance, the authors conducted an eye-tracking study in which 22 highly spider fearful participants (SFs) and 23 nonanxious control participants (NACs) studied groups of 4 pictures (spider, butterfly, dog, and cat). The authors found that the very first fixation was on a spider picture more often in SFs than in NACs. However, SFs quickly moved the

A 34-year-old woman with severe mental retardation suffered from gastroesophageal reflux, projectile vomiting, weight loss, and a prepyloric ulcer. Despite the implementation of non-intrusive behavior treatment procedures involving simple correction and differential reinforcement (Treatment A), fundoplication surgery with implantation of a gastrostomy feeding tube had been recommended. A descriptive functional analysis suggested that the woman's vomiting was maintained by escape. Revised treatment was implemented throughout her waking hours. Treatment B consisted of the addition of escape exti

1. The nosological status of panic disorder is still a matter of debate. Nevertheless, evidence is emerging that panic attacks have a different pattern of drug responsiveness from other forms of anxiety. 2. Several experimental animal models of panic attacks have been developed. These vary in the extent to which they meet criteria for face validity, predictive validity and construct validity, normally applied to such models. 3. In the present review, the authors examine the possibility that predator-elicited flight responses in Swiss-Webster mice might serve as an experimental model for the sc
