[Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli from the rabbit].

Intestinal pathology is the main cause of morbidity and mortality in breeding colonies of commercial rabbits. Among pathogens, some strains of Escherichia coli are widely involved in enteric infections. In France, pathogenic E coli belonging to the 0103 serogroup has been isolated in 30-40% of weanling rabbits with diarrhea. Given these conditions, it was of interest to review the different groups of diarrheogenic E coli and their plasmid-encoded virulence properties, especially adhesion and secretion of enterotoxins or cytotoxins. We attempted to investigate the E coli responsible for diarrhe

Pathogenic Escherichia coli found in food.

The bacteria constituting the species Escherichia coli are commonly found in the intestinal flora of man and animals, and were until late 1950s recognized as non-pathogenic normal cohabitants. However, certain strains might induce disease, and E. coli should therefore be regarded as a potential pathogenic organism. The pathogenic strains can cause distinct disease syndrome as different diarrheal diseases, wound infections, meningitis, septicemia, artherosclerosis, hemolytic uremic syndrome and immunological diseases such as reactive and rheumatoid arthritis. Several different groups of diarrhe

Chlorine Dioxide Is an Effective Disinfectant Against Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, Enteropathogenic E. coli and Escherichia albertii.

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is used as a disinfectant in food and environmental sanitation. However, information regarding its efficacy against enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) under organic load conditions remains limited. This study evaluated the bactericidal activity of aqueous ClO2 against clinically important EHEC serogroups and compared its efficacy with that of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO). Additionally, other bacterial strains, including enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), Escherichia albertii, and E. coli type strains, were also examined. Under organic load conditions, treatment with

Dual infection with attaching and effacing Escherichia coli and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli in post-weaning pigs.

Post-weaning diarrhoea in pigs occurred on two farms in Hokkaido, Japan, in 1994. Four piglets aged 35 or 45 days were examined after death. At necropsy, ecchymotic haemorrhages were seen on the mucosal surface of the caecum and colon. Histopathologically, numerous Gram-negative bacilli adhered to the brush border of the small intestines, but the brush border itself was intact. Typical attaching and effacing (AE) lesions were seen in the caecum and colon. Immunohistochemically, the bacilli which adhered to the brush border gave positive results with antisera against serogroup O149 of Escherich

Distinguishing Pathovars from Nonpathovars: Escherichia coli.

Escherichia coli is one of the most well-adapted and pathogenically versatile bacterial organisms. It causes a variety of human infections, including gastrointestinal illnesses and extraintestinal infections. It is also part of the intestinal commensal flora of humans and other mammals. Groups of E. coli that cause diarrhea are often described as intestinal pathogenic E. coli (IPEC), while those that cause infections outside of the gut are called extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC). IPEC can cause a variety of diarrheal illnesses as well as extraintestinal syndromes such as hemolytic-ur

Pathoadaptive Mutations in Uropathogenic Escherichia coli.

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) are opportunistic human pathogens that primarily circulate as part of commensal intestinal microbiota. Though they have the ability to survive and proliferate in various urinary tract compartments, the urinary tract is a transient, occasional habitat for UPEC. Because of this, most of the UPEC traits have originally evolved to serve in intestinal colonization and transmission. Some of these bacterial traits serve as virulence factors - they are critical to or assist in survival of UPEC as pathogens, and the structure and/or function may be specialized for

Enteropathogenic escherichia coli infection in children.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is an important diarrheal pathogen of young children. As the diagnosis of EPEC is now based mainly on molecular criteria, there has been an important change in its prevalence. The purpose of this study is to review the current epidemiology of EPEC infection and the new insights into its physiopathology. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent epidemiological studies indicate that atypical EPEC (aEPEC) is more prevalent than typical EPEC (tEPEC) in both developed and developing countries, and that aEPEC is important in both pediatric endemic diarrhea

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC).

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are important enteric pathogens worldwide, causing diarrhea with or without blood visibly present and hemolytic uremic syndrome. STEC are unique among diarrheogenic E coli in producing Shiga toxin type 1 and type 2, the virulence factors responsible for bloody diarrhea and hemolytic uremic syndrome. Cattle and other ruminants are the natural reservoir of STEC as their normal intestinal flora. Humans become infected by consumption of foods contaminated with cattle feces. Early diagnosis of STEC infection is important because of the contraindication

High frequency of hybrid Escherichia coli strains with combined Intestinal Pathogenic Escherichia coli (IPEC) and Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) virulence factors isolated from human faecal samples.

BACKGROUND: Classification of pathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli) has traditionally relied on detecting specific virulence associated genes (VAGs) or combinations thereof. For E. coli isolated from faecal samples, the presence of specific genes associated with different intestinal pathogenic pathovars will determine their classification and further course of action. However, the E. coli genome is not a static entity, and hybrid strains are emerging that cross the pathovar definitions. Hybrid strains may show gene contents previously associated with several distinct pathovars making the corre

Copper Kills Escherichia coli Persister Cells.

Due to their reduced metabolism, persister cells can survive most antimicrobial treatments, which usually rely on corrupting active biochemical pathways. Therefore, molecules that kill bacterial persisters should function in a metabolism-independent manner. Some anti-persister compounds have been found previously, such as the DNA-crosslinkers mitomycin C and cisplatin, but more effective and lower cost alternatives are needed. Copper alloys have been used since ancient times due to their antimicrobial properties, and they are still used in agriculture to control plant bacterial diseases. By st

Pyelonephritis Caused Solely by Escherichia hermanii.

INTRODUCTION: In contrast with Escherichia coli, the association of E. hermanii with urinary tract infections has not been described. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case, E. hermanii was the sole isolate recovered from urine specimens of a pyelonephritis patient. The organism was found to be susceptible to piperacillin-tazobactam, ceftazidime, cefazolin, cefixime, aztreonam, gentamicin, tobramycin, imipenem, meropenem and amikacin, and resistant to amoxicillin. Antibiotic treatment was initiated with oral cefixime (400 mg every 24 hours). The symptoms were relieved within 72 hours after therapy.

Molecular epidemiology of uropathogenic Escherichia coli.

Escherichia coli is the most common cause of complicated as well as uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs). Most of these uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) strains exhibit certain virulence factors (VFs), including adhesins, iron uptake systems, synthesis of cytotoxins, and specific O:K:H serotypes. Molecular epidemiological studies of UPEC have contributed to the discovery of uropathogenic VFs, to an understanding of the pathogenesis of UTIs as ascending infections, and to the clarification of genetic linkages between different virulence genes such as pathogenicity islands (PAIs), which are

Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli in human medicine.

Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) are the pathogenic subgroup of Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing E. coli. EHEC can cause non-bloody and bloody diarrhoea, and the haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). HUS is a major cause of acute renal failure in children. E. coli O57:H7 is the predominant, but far from being the only, serotype that can cause HUS. The cascade leading from gastrointestinal infection to renal impairment is complex, with the microvascular endothelium being the major histopathological target. EHEC also produce non-Stx molecules, such as cytolethal distending toxin, which can con

Rhabdomyolysis associated with Escherichia coli septicemia.

Rhabdomyolysis resulting from septicemia (and endotoxemia) is not generally appreciated. In the present case, rhabdomyolysis and renal insufficiency followed documented E coli septicemia. Other causes of rhabdomyolysis were not identified in this patient. Thus, physicians should be alerted to this potentially serious complication of gram-negative septicemia.
