[Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli from the rabbit].

Intestinal pathology is the main cause of morbidity and mortality in breeding colonies of commercial rabbits. Among pathogens, some strains of Escherichia coli are widely involved in enteric infections. In France, pathogenic E coli belonging to the 0103 serogroup has been isolated in 30-40% of weanling rabbits with diarrhea. Given these conditions, it was of interest to review the different groups of diarrheogenic E coli and their plasmid-encoded virulence properties, especially adhesion and secretion of enterotoxins or cytotoxins. We attempted to investigate the E coli responsible for diarrhe…

Pathogenic Escherichia coli found in food.

The bacteria constituting the species Escherichia coli are commonly found in the intestinal flora of man and animals, and were until late 1950s recognized as non-pathogenic normal cohabitants. However, certain strains might induce disease, and E. coli should therefore be regarded as a potential pathogenic organism. The pathogenic strains can cause distinct disease syndrome as different diarrheal diseases, wound infections, meningitis, septicemia, artherosclerosis, hemolytic uremic syndrome and immunological diseases such as reactive and rheumatoid arthritis. Several different groups of diarrhe…

High frequency of hybrid Escherichia coli strains with combined Intestinal Pathogenic Escherichia coli (IPEC) and Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) virulence factors isolated from human faecal samples.

BACKGROUND: Classification of pathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli) has traditionally relied on detecting specific virulence associated genes (VAGs) or combinations thereof. For E. coli isolated from faecal samples, the presence of specific genes associated with different intestinal pathogenic pathovars will determine their classification and further course of action. However, the E. coli genome is not a static entity, and hybrid strains are emerging that cross the pathovar definitions. Hybrid strains may show gene contents previously associated with several distinct pathovars making the corre…

Distinguishing Pathovars from Nonpathovars: Escherichia coli.

Escherichia coli is one of the most well-adapted and pathogenically versatile bacterial organisms. It causes a variety of human infections, including gastrointestinal illnesses and extraintestinal infections. It is also part of the intestinal commensal flora of humans and other mammals. Groups of E. coli that cause diarrhea are often described as intestinal pathogenic E. coli (IPEC), while those that cause infections outside of the gut are called extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC). IPEC can cause a variety of diarrheal illnesses as well as extraintestinal syndromes such as hemolytic-ur…

Pathoadaptive Mutations in Uropathogenic Escherichia coli.

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) are opportunistic human pathogens that primarily circulate as part of commensal intestinal microbiota. Though they have the ability to survive and proliferate in various urinary tract compartments, the urinary tract is a transient, occasional habitat for UPEC. Because of this, most of the UPEC traits have originally evolved to serve in intestinal colonization and transmission. Some of these bacterial traits serve as virulence factors - they are critical to or assist in survival of UPEC as pathogens, and the structure and/or function may be specialized for …

Enteropathogenic escherichia coli infection in children.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is an important diarrheal pathogen of young children. As the diagnosis of EPEC is now based mainly on molecular criteria, there has been an important change in its prevalence. The purpose of this study is to review the current epidemiology of EPEC infection and the new insights into its physiopathology. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent epidemiological studies indicate that atypical EPEC (aEPEC) is more prevalent than typical EPEC (tEPEC) in both developed and developing countries, and that aEPEC is important in both pediatric endemic diarrhea…

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC).

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are important enteric pathogens worldwide, causing diarrhea with or without blood visibly present and hemolytic uremic syndrome. STEC are unique among diarrheogenic E coli in producing Shiga toxin type 1 and type 2, the virulence factors responsible for bloody diarrhea and hemolytic uremic syndrome. Cattle and other ruminants are the natural reservoir of STEC as their normal intestinal flora. Humans become infected by consumption of foods contaminated with cattle feces. Early diagnosis of STEC infection is important because of the contraindication …

Copper Kills Escherichia coli Persister Cells.

Due to their reduced metabolism, persister cells can survive most antimicrobial treatments, which usually rely on corrupting active biochemi … ting with ampicillin to remove non-persister cells, we created a population that consists solely of Escherichia coli persister cells. Using this population of persister cells, we demonstrate that cupric compounds kill E. coli persister cells. Hence, copper ions may be used in controlling the spread of important bacterial strains that withstand treatment with conve …

Molecular epidemiology of uropathogenic Escherichia coli.

Escherichia coli is the most common cause of complicated as well as uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs). Most of these uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) strains exhibit certain virulence factors (VFs), including adhesins, iron uptake systems, synthesis of cytotoxins, and specific O:K:H serotypes. Molecular epidemiological studies of UPEC have contributed to the discovery of uropathogenic VFs, to an understanding of the pathogenesis of UTIs as ascending infections, and to the clarification of genetic linkages between different virulence genes such as pathogenicity islands (PAIs), which are…

Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli in human medicine.

Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) are the pathogenic subgroup of Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing E. coli. EHEC can cause non-bloody and bloody diarrhoea, and the haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). HUS is a major cause of acute renal failure in children. E. coli O57:H7 is the predominant, but far from being the only, serotype that can cause HUS. The cascade leading from gastrointestinal infection to renal impairment is complex, with the microvascular endothelium being the major histopathological target. EHEC also produce non-Stx molecules, such as cytolethal distending toxin, which can con…

Rhabdomyolysis associated with Escherichia coli septicemia.

Rhabdomyolysis resulting from septicemia (and endotoxemia) is not generally appreciated. In the present case, rhabdomyolysis and renal insufficiency followed documented E coli septicemia. Other causes of rhabdomyolysis were not identified in this patient. Thus, physicians should be alerted to this potentially serious complication of gram-negative septicemia.

Atypical SARS and Escherichia coli bacteremia.

We describe a patient with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) whose clinical symptoms were masked by Escherichia coli bacteremia. SARS developed in a cluster of healthcare workers who had contact with this patient. SARS was diagnosed when a chest infiltrate developed and when the patient's brother was hospitalized with acute respiratory failure. We highlight problems in atypical cases and offer infection control suggestions.

Escherichia coli myonecrosis in alcoholic cirrhosis.

The risk of bacteremia in patients with cirrhosis increases with more advanced Child classification. Escherichia coli is the most frequently implicated organism in these bacteremic episodes. Unusually, E. coli can produce a bullous cellulitis or myonecrosis. Two previous cases of E. coli-associated myonecrosis in patients with cirrhosis have been reported. We describe a third case in a cirrhotic patient with E. coli-associated bilateral lower extremity gas gangrene and review the existing literature. In the three patients with cirrhosis and E. coli myonecrosis, no obvious gastrointestinal perf…
