Mediastinal esophageal duplication cyst associated with a partial pericardial defect.

A two-year-old girl with a mediastinal esophageal duplication cyst is the twelfth example of a thoracic cyst of foregut origin or pulmonary "sequestration" (bronchopulmonary foregut malformation according to the expanded definition of Gerle et al.) that has been associated with a partial pericardial defect on the same side, suggesting that anomalous thoracic masses of several morphologic types have a similar pathogenesis.

[Congenital esophageal duplication cysts: progressive dysphagia in adulthood].

Esophageal duplications are congenital abnormalities of the foregut. We present the case of a 33-year-old woman suffering from progressive dysphagia who had surgery for esophageal duplication. The following three criteria define the cystic lesion: an intimate attachment to the esophageal wall, the presence of a smooth muscle coat and a mucosal lining consisting of squamous and/or ciliated respiratory epithelium. Diverticula, bronchogenic cysts and cystic neoplasms have to be considered in the differential diagnosis. Congenital cystic esophageal duplication is a rare cause of dysphagia in adult

Bronchogenic cysts and esophageal duplications: common origins and treatment.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Bronchogenic cysts and esophageal duplications are usually considered as separate foregut malformations. Yet, both are thought to arise from the same embryological event, division of the embryonic foregut, and they share common histological characteristics, often making their clinical differentiation difficult. METHODS: A retrospective review of the cases of 68 children treated at a single institution between 1937 and 1995 was performed. Thirty children were girls (44%) and 38 were boys (56%). Ages ranged from newborn to 24 years. Complete records were available in all chi

[Clinicopathologic assessment of esophageal cysts--a report of 8 cases].

We experienced 8 cases of esophageal cysts on between January, 1965 and March, 1989. During the same period, 320 cases of mediastinal tumors were operated in our department, and esophageal cysts were 2.5% of these cases. They were 7 males and 1 female, and ranged in age from 5 to 51 (mean 29.9) years. The cysts were located in the right in 6 and in the left in 2, and in the upper third of the esophagus in 1, middle third in 3 and lower third in 2 cases. A correct preoperative diagnosis was made in only 1 case. The definite diagnoses were not obtained from thoracic CT scans and esophagography.

[Congenital cysts of the esophageal wall with a respiratory type mucosa].

Eight patients with congenital esophageal cysts are described. They presented with respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms or an abnormal mediastinal profile on a standard chest film. All cysts were contained in the middle or inferior portions of the thoracic esophagus. They were excised in a submucosal plane. Their coat was composed of a ciliated, respiratory type epithelium. In the embryo and after separation of the tracheal diverticulum, the esophagus is lined with ciliated cells which are able cover a "cystic duplication", which is surrounded by an esophageal muscular coat or can be "incl

A rare cause of wheezing in an infant: Esophageal duplication cyst.

Esophageal duplication cyst (EDC) is classified as a subgroup of foregut duplication cyst. They are very rare and predominantly detected in children. We present an unusual cause of wheezing in a 2-month-old infant. The diagnosis of EDC was suspected by bronchoscopy, provisionally confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging, and followed by successful surgical excision of the cyst. We conclude that foregut duplication cyst of the esophagus is very rare, and must be considered in the differential diagnosis of persistent wheezing in infants who do not respond to conventional treatment.

Esophageal duplication cysts: endosonographic findings in asymptomatic patients.

Esophageal duplication cysts are rare inherited lesions usually diagnosed in early childhood. Most of them are found in the mediastinum and manifest themselves as separate masses along or in continuity with the native esophagus. Their prevalence remains unknown and they are treated either surgically or endoscopically. In this report we describe a series of four adult patients in whom esophageal duplication cysts were localised intramurally as masses pressing on the esophageal lumen and who were diagnosed with endoscopic ultrasonography. All patients were initially referred to other centres for

Bronchogenic and esophageal cyst with laryngeal malformations in a thoroughbred foal.

This report documents an unusual case of congenital foregut cyst with dysphagia and stridor in a Thoroughbred foal. Histologically, the bilocular cyst, near the junction of larynx and trachea, had an epithelial lining of bronchogenic and esophageal origin. Concomitant malformation of the laryngeal muscles and cartilage resulted in a combination of anomalies that have not been reported in the human or veterinary literature.

A predisposing factor for spontaneous choledochal cyst perforation: esophageal dilatation procedures.

Cyst rupture is one of the rarest complications of choledochal cysts (CC). We report an 8-year-old boy with CC rupture leading to bile peritonitis following repeated esophageal dilatations for corrosive stricture, and discuss how the esophageal dilatation procedures might constitute a predisposing factor for CC perforation.

Esophageal duplication cyst with hemivertebrae: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal duplication cysts (EDCs) are rare congenital anomalies that can be associated with symptomatic spinal abnormalities, but presentations due to EDC symptoms are rarely found in the presence of spinal abnormalities. CASE SUMMARY: A 6-month-old infant weighing approximately 5.0 kg presented with a 2-month pulmonary infection and more recent difficulty swallowing and nutritional intolerance that did not improve with medical treatment. Contrast-enhanced chest computed tomography showed a well-defined, mediastinal, homogeneous, low-density cystic mass of 11.9 × 5.5 × 5.1 cm, c

[A case of giant bronchogenic cyst complicated with postoperative esophageal perforation].

A 42-year-old man with giant bronchogenic cyst occupied from the middle and posterior mediastinum was treated surgically. The tumor was stoutly adhered to anterior aspect of the esophagus and membranous portion of the right bronchus. In dissecting the tumor, muscular coat of the esophagus was partly severed, which was repaired interruptedly with absorbable suture material. However, esophageal perforation was detected by barium swallow on the 3rd postoperative day. Conservative therapy included intrathoracic drainage and antibiotics was successfully undertaken. It is imperative to dissect the t

Congenital Esophageal Duplication Cyst: A Rare Cause of Dysphagia in an Adult.

Esophageal duplication cyst is a rare congenital embryonal gastrointestinal (GI) malformation which is diagnosed most commonly in childhood. In adults, they can present with a variety of symptoms ranging from dysphagia, chest pain, epigastric discomfort, and vomiting to more serious complications including infections, hemorrhage, and ulcerations. A 30-year-old male presented with gradually progressive dysphagia to solids for 4 months without significant weight loss. Clinical examination and routine laboratory examination were unrevealing. Upper GI endoscopy revealed a well-defined submucosal l

Bronchogenic and esophageal duplication cyst in a single mediastinal mass in a child.

We report an unusual case of a mediastinal foregut malformation consisting of complete components of both a bronchogenic and an esophageal duplication cyst in a child. The lesion was identified as an incidental finding during evaluation of a clavicular fracture. Thoracotomy was performed for excision of the mass. A discussion of the pathological findings and the diagnosis and management of foregut malformations is presented.
