Different labelling of obstructive airway diseases in Estonia, Finland, and Sweden.

Large differences in prevalence of asthma have been reported between westernised countries and the former Eastern European countries, and still no consensus about the reasons for the differences exists. The aim of this study was to assess diagnostic labelling of obstructive airway diseases, comparing subjects with respiratory symptoms and the diagnoses obtained in Estonia, Finland, and Sweden. A postal questionnaire was sent to population-based random samples, and 44,483 (76%) answers were obtained from the 58,661 invited in 1996. Among men, current smoking was most common in Estonia, 60%, fol

Distribution of sylvatic species of Trichinella in Estonia according to climate zones.

A survey on trichinellosis among sylvatic and domestic animals from Estonia revealed the presence of Trichinella nativa (Tn), Trichinella britovi (Tb), and Trichinella spiralis (Ts). Muscle samples were collected from 776 sylvatic and 1,086 domestic animals. Muscle larvae from 52 of the 74 positive samples were identified, using random-amplified polymorphic DNA analysis; 19 samples showed Tn, 27 samples Tb, and 4 samples Ts. A raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) and a red fox (Vulpes vulpes) were infected with both Tn and Tb. Of the 19 animals infected with Tn, 16 (84%) were collected from

Leptospira spp. in Cats in Estonia: Seroprevalence and Risk Factors for Seropositivity.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic bacterial disease that affects humans and animals worldwide. Recently, more attention has been paid to Leptospira spp. infections in domestic cats. In this seroepidemiological study, we estimated the prevalence of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies in domestic cats in Estonia and evaluated risk factors for the seropositivity. A total of 546 surplus feline plasma and serum samples, collected in collaboration with small animal clinics and an animal shelter in 2013 and 2015, were included in this study. The samples were tested for antibodies against Leptospira spp. using

A Population-Based Surveillance Study on the Epidemiology of Hepatitis C in Estonia.

Background and objective: The hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected patients serve as a reservoir for transmission of the disease to others and are at risk of developing chronic hepatitis C, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Although the epidemiological data of high rate HCV infection have been obtained in many countries, such data are insufficient in Estonia. Therefore, the aim of the study was to analyze country-specific data on HCV patients. Materials and methods: Data about age, gender, diagnosis, possible risk factors, coinfections, HCV genotypes, liver fibrosis stages and extrahepatic

Echinococcus multilocularis and other zoonotic parasites in red foxes in Estonia.

Red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the most widely distributed canid in the world and an important source of multiple zoonotic pathogens capable of causing life-threatening diseases, such as rabies and alveolar echinococcosis. Informing general public of potential risks related to foxes is becoming more important since the fox densities have increased in many countries and the species is colonizing urban areas in Europe and around the world with increasing pace, bringing zoonotic pathogens to the immediate neighbourhood of humans and their companion animals. The aim of this study was to examine the pa

Epidemiological investigations on Trichinella infections in farmed fur animals of Estonia.

Farming of fur animals represents an important income in Estonia. Even though Trichinella worms does not induce a symptomatic disease in carnivores, the carcasses of skinned animals can increase the biomass of the parasite in the environment, if they are not properly destroyed. The aim of the present survey was to study the prevalence of Trichinella worms in farmed fur animals of Estonia. Of 281 muscle samples from blue foxes (Alopex lagopus), silver foxes (Vulpes vulpes fulva), minks (Mustela vison) and raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides), which were collected in eight farms, Trichinella

Midwifery at the crossroads in Estonia: attitudes of midwives and other key stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Since the initiation of health sector reforms in Estonia in 1992, the Baltic state has experienced a steep decline in the number of midwives and midwife graduates. At the same time, there has been a rapid increase, first in sexually transmitted infections and then in human immunodeficiency virus. The aim of this study was to draw on the perceptions of Estonia's midwives and other health care stakeholders to delineate the current situation of midwifery in the country, in the context of a sexually transmitted infection/human immunodeficiency virus epidemic. Seroprevalence of tick-borne Lyme borreliosis in a defined population in Estonia.

Sera from 200 randomly selected individuals living in Karksi Nuia, south Estonia, near an area endemic for tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme borreliosis (LB), were tested for antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi. Antibodies were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 6 individuals (3%; 95% CI: 1-5%), who were middle-aged, asymptomatic anti-nuclear and anti-smooth muscle antibody negative. Our data show that there is low seroprevalence rate of antibodies to B. burgdorferi in an unselected south Estonian population.

Exploring the hereditary genetic mutational landscape of breast and ovarian cancer in Estonia.

Germline genetic testing (GT) of cancer-associated genes enables the identification of hereditary risk in breast (BC) and ovarian cancer (OC) patients, supporting early diagnosis and personalized treatment strategies. In this study, we analyzed data from 3,537 patients who underwent routine clinical GT in Estonia between 2007–2023, including 2,856 BC and 759 cases of OC. A total of 78 individuals in the study were diagnosed with both BC and OC. The mean age at diagnosis and GT was 50.4 ± 12.0 and 54.0 ± 12.5 years for BC, and 56.1 ± 14.1 and 59.4 ± 13.3 years for OC, respectively. Non-genetic

Evaluation of Prevalence of Hepatitis E Clinical Markers among Donors in Estonia.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is now considered the most common cause of acute hepatitis worldwide. There are no published data about the prevalence of antibodies to HEV and RNA in donor sera in Estonia, and this precludes planning measures for preventing HEV proliferation through blood transfusion services. Here, were report data from an analysis of 1002 sera on the prevalence of anti-HEV IgG and IgM and the viral RNA. The antibodies were found in 48 donor sera (4.8%); of these, 40 (4%) harbored anti-HEV IgG, 15 (1.5%) contained anti-HEV IgM, and 7 donors had anti-HEV antibodies of both classes sim
