BACKGROUND: Ethylene glycol (EG) (antifreeze) toxicosis has mostly been reported in dogs and cats, while reports on EG toxicosis in cattle are sparse. We report EG toxicosis in 25 milk-fed calves associated with a leak in the cooling pipes in a milk taxi. The milk taxi was connected to a geothermal heating system in which EG was used as antifreeze.
CASE PRESENTATION: Although the assistant responsible for feeding milk to the calves observed a few blue-colored droplets of liquid on the surface of the milk in the milk taxi and suspected EG contamination, the milk was fed to the calves. Within h

We present a rare case of the intentional poisoning of a neonate. An 8-day old child presented to an academic pediatric emergency department (ED) with respiratory distress and decreased intake. In the ED the patient was stabilized, and workup uncovered an anion gap metabolic acidosis. Blood, urine, and CSF cultures were negative at 48 h and a metabolic screen revealed elevated glycine. Calcium oxalate crystals were later found in the urinalysis, raising concern for ethylene glycol poisoning. The patient's father admitted to mixing antifreeze with the child's formula. The workup of an ill or di

Ethylene glycol toxicity is a known cause of anion gap metabolic acidosis, with the presence of an osmolar gap and the right clinical context suggesting to the diagnosis. Rapid recognition and early treatment is crucial. Unfortunately, ethylene glycol levels are not readily available and must be performed at a reference laboratory. We present a case where recognising the significance of the 'lactate gap' assisted in identifying ethylene glycol poisoning.

BACKGROUND: There have been an increasing number of reports on false increase of lactate in ethylene glycol poisoning. We recently encountered two cases of ethylene glycol poisoning with very high blood lactate concentrations on ABL blood gas analyzers.
METHODS: Patient plasma lactate concentrations were measured on different chemistry instruments in addition to ABL analyzer. Serum ethylene glycol and glycolic acid were also determined. Lactate values were determined from samples spiked with various amounts of glycolic acid.
RESULTS: In case 1, all the chemistry instruments produced similar

Ethylene glycol alkyl ethers (EGAE), 2-methoxyethanol, 2-ethoxyethanol, 2-isopropoxyethanol, and 2-butoxyethanol, are widely used in a variety of industrial and household products. They are found in a number of paints, varnishes, engine fuels, hydraulic fluids, and also in many household products, including floor polishes and glass, leather, and upholstery cleaners. Human and animal studies have shown that EGAE can cause adverse reproductive, developmental, and hematological effects through inhalation, dermal absorption, and ingestion. The oxidation of these chemicals to appropriate aldehydes

In the literature, many papers deal with the behavior of proteins in aqueous media in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) molecules or poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) segments, physically adsorbed onto, or covalently attached to, macromolecules or to solid surfaces. In particular, it is well known that PEO segments make foreign materials stealthy, i.e. they are much less detected by the immune system either through humoral reactions or, at the cell level, through opsonins. Revisiting the literature led us to challenge the largely accepted opinion that the decreased recognition of PEO segmen

INTRODUCTION: Ethylene glycol toxicity has produced central nervous system abnormalities including coma, cerebral edema, and cranial nerve dysfunction.
CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old male developed widespread brainstem and midbrain dysfunction with corresponding cranial computed tomography findings after ingesting ethylene glycol. The computed tomography scan which was obtained 3 days after ethylene glycol ingestion showed low density areas in the basal ganglia, thalami, midbrain, and upper pons. The neurologic findings in our patient reflected dysfunction of all the areas of hypodensity on the c

Ethylene glycol (EG) is the most representative of the glycols. It is a compound used as painting and plastic solvent, as antifreeze, and in dyes and synthetic fibers. It may also appear as a wine pollutant. Due to these various uses and conditions, EG can produce intoxication in men and animals. The pathologic effects are due to its metabolism resulting in the formation of oxalic and glycolic acids which are eliminated through the kidney causing renal failure. The toxic effects on the nervous system are not well known. In some circumstances, convulsions may occur. To study the neurotoxic effe

Fifteen dogs were given 9.5 ml of ethylene glycol/kg of body weight, orally. Physical examination and clinical laboratory findings were evaluated at 1 and 3 hours after ingestion. Three of these dogs were also evaluated at 6, 9, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours after ingestion. At 1 and 3 hours, the dogs were depressed, ataxic, and polydipsic with increased urine output and serum osmolality. Plasma bicarbonate and urine osmolality were decreased. The osmolal and anion gaps were increased at 1 and 3 hours, respectively. Calcium oxalate crystalluria was first observed at 6 hours. Diminished renal excret

Enzyme-responsive polymeric-based nanostructures are potential candidates for serving as key materials in targeted drug delivery carriers. However, the major risk in their prolonged application is fast disassembling of the short-lived polymeric-based structures. Another disadvantage is the limited accessibility of the enzyme to the moieties that are located inside the network. Here, we report on a modified environmentally responsive and enzymatically cleavable nanogel carrier that contains a hybrid network. A properly adjusted volume phase transition (VPT) temperature allowed independent shrin

In this paper, different poly((ethylene glycol)-(propylene glycol)) methacrylate (P(EGPG)MA) hydrogels were synthesized by gamma-radiation-induced polymerization and crosslinking from a monomer-bisolvent mixture using the following monomers: (ethylene glycol)6 methacrylate (EG6MA), ((ethylene glycol)6-(propylene glycol)3) methacrylate (EG6PG3MA), ((propylene glycol)6-(ethylene glycol)3) methacrylate (PG6EG3MA), and (propylene glycol)5 methacrylate (PG5MA), along with different water/ethanol compositions as the solvent. The monomer-bisolvent mixture was exposed to various radiation doses (5, 10

Aqueous solutions of glycols, on the one hand, are widely used in many applications; on the other hand, they can serve as simple and representative models for studying intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonds. In this work, we analyze the possibilities and limitations of Raman spectroscopy for fundamental and applied researches of such solutions on the examples of ethylene glycol (EG) and 1,3-propylene glycol (1,3-PG). It is shown that Raman spectroscopy is an effective tool for monitoring temporal changes in the structure of glycol solutions deposited on substrates. This study demonstrates th

Contamination of pharmaceutical syrups with ethylene glycol (EG) and diethylene glycol (DEG) has led to serious poisoning incidents worldwide, highlighting the necessity for strong regulations and reliable testing methods. A gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method was developed and validated in accordance with ICH Q2(R2) guidelines. The method was developed for pharmaceutical syrup matrices and validated using multiple commercially available products, supporting its applicability for routine regulatory surveillance. It exhibited excellent linearity, with r² of 0.9991 for EG and 0.9

Intrauterine adhesions (IUA) often occur as a result of trauma to the basal layer after curettage, postpartum hemorrhage, or surgical miscarriage. Endometrial fibrosis is the primary pathological feature of IUA. The characteristic features of IUA include excessive deposition and reorganization of the extracellular matrix, replacing the normal endometrium. To prevent uterine fibrosis after injury, we prepared and evaluated a type of fibroblast suppressive hydrogel. Poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(l-phenylalanine) (PEBP) copolymers were successfully synthesized by ring opening polymerization of l-P

Pathology repositories worldwide store millions of celloidin-processed human brain and temporal bone (TB) sections vital for studying central nervous system diseases and sensory organs. However, accessing these sections for modern molecular-pathological research, like immunohistochemistry, is hindered by the challenge of removing celloidin without damaging tissue. In this study, we explored the use of polyethylene glycols (PEGs), a class of non-hazardous, ethylene glycol oligomers, combined with an improved section mounting technique, to gently and effectively dissolve celloidin from sections

Ethylene glycol toxicity poses a significant global health challenge, especially in low-income countries where it contaminates cough syrups. While global incidence is under-reported compared with the USA, mortality rates are much higher. In the USA, toxicity typically results from accidental ingestion. We report a man in his late 70s with hypertension who presented after being found unresponsive following a seizure. Laboratory findings showed severe anion gap metabolic acidosis with elevated osmolar gap, elevated lactate, acute kidney injury and urinary calcium oxalate crystals. Serum ethanol

Ethylene glycol (EG) toxicity is an important cause of toxic alcohol poisoning in the USA with over 5,000 exposures reported annually. While classically characterized by solitary accidental or intentional ingestions, mass toxic alcohol poisoning outbreaks and more rarely collective consumptions (typically of methanol) have been described. We describe an ethylene glycol poisoning from collective ingestion that involved soldiers presenting at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. Eleven soldiers presented to the emergency department over a 12-h period after ingestion of an unkn

Ethylene glycol is a widely utilized commodity chemical, the production of which accounts for over 46 million tons of CO2 emission annually. Here we report a paired electrocatalytic approach for ethylene glycol production from methanol. Carbon catalysts are effective in reducing formaldehyde into ethylene glycol with a 92% Faradaic efficiency, whereas Pt catalysts at the anode enable formaldehyde production through methanol partial oxidation with a 75% Faradaic efficiency. With a membrane-electrode assembly configuration, we show the feasibility of ethylene glycol electrosynthesis from methano

OBJECTIVE: Fomepizole is the antidote of choice in toxic alcohol poisonings. Potential side effects from frequent use of fomepizole were studied in a patient admitted 154 times with ethylene glycol (EG) poisoning. The intra-individual correlation between the serum-ethylene glycol (serum-EG) and the osmolal gap (OG) EG-kinetics, and other laboratory parameters were also studied.
METHODS: Combined pro- and retrospective collection of material from three different hospitals, and results from autopsy.
RESULTS: A 26-year-old female with a dissociative disorder was admitted with EG poisoning a tot

The Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) technique was applied to prepare two-dimensional films of tridodecylamine (TDA)-stabilized Co nanoparticles. Ethylene glycol was used as the subphase because the Co nanoparticles spread better on it than on water. Surface pressure-area isotherms provided very little information on the floating films, and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) was needed to characterize the film formation in situ. In addition to the subphase, various other experimental factors were tested in the LS film preparation, including solvent and presence of free TDA ligands and poly(styrene-b-ethyle
