Eleven unassembled metal backed patellar interfaces were inoculated with 0.1 ml of Sportol (Bacillus subtilis variety niger spore) and then assembled. In this study, the effects of methylcobalamin on testicular damage induced by ethylene oxide (EtO) were studied. When Wistar male rats inhaled EtO at 500 ppm, 6 h a day, 3 days a week, for 6 weeks, testicular damage was observed histopathologically and by some other parameters. Subcutaneous injection of methylcobalamin at 500 micrograms/kg, 5 times/week was found to ameliorate the damage. IgE-antibodies against ethylene oxide (EtO) and activation of the complement system have been suspected as causative factors for acute hypersensitivity reactions at the onset of haemodialysis. IgE-type antibodies to human serum albumin/ethylene oxide conjugates were determined in 153 patients (140 unselected, 13 selected for presence of eosinophilia) on regular dialysis treatment by radioallergosorbent test (RAST) techniques. The authors have elaborated the technic for procurement of homografts from the lower jaw bone taken from cadaver-donors, without observing aseptic rules, with their subsequent ethylene epoxide sterilization in a portable chamber. Experimental studies have demonstrated that ethylene epoxide renders no negative effect on osteoplastic properties of the homograft, the rate of its reconstruction was dependent on the method of preservation. The results of osteohomoplasty for mandibular defects in 46 patients are summarized.

Ethylene oxide (EtO) is primarily used as an intermediate in the manufacture of chemicals, with a minor use as a sterilant for medical equipment and food products. One of the most used method of medical appliances sterilization uses ethylene oxide. At high concentration, this very reactive product, causes caustic burns of skin and mucous membranes. In one case of acute pulmonary oedema, levels of ethylene oxide in the endotracheal catheter were discovered. This led us to review the toxicological data on this substance. It should be emphasized that the sterilization and the desorption according to simple and precise rules should prevent such acute accidents.

BACKGROUND: Gas sterilization (eg, ethylene oxide [EtO] and gas plasma) was introduced for polyethylene to reduce oxidation due to free radicals occurring during radiation sterilization.
