Vascular calcification (VC) is a frequent condition in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and a well-established risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Gut dysbiosis may contribute to CVD and inflammation in CKD patients. Nonetheless, the role of gut and blood microbiomes in CKD-associated VC remains unknown. Therefore, this pilot study aimed to explore the link between gut and blood microbiomes and VC in CKD patients on peritoneal dialysis (CKD-PD). Our results showed relative changes in specific taxa between CKD-PD patients with and without VC, namely Coprobacter, Coproco

Alcohol abuse, also known as Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), is a substance dependency psychiatric disorder. We aimed to establish a causal relationship between specific gut microbiota and alcohol abuse using Mendelian Randomisation (MR) and bioinformatics methods. We acquired summary data of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for gut microbiota and alcohol abuse from the Mibiogen and Finngen databases, respectively. We conducted MR analyses using various methodologies and mapped the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to genes via the FUMA GWAS platform. We further performed multiple enric

Gut dysbiosis, an imbalance in gut microbiota, is increasingly linked to depression through the microbiota-gut-brain axis. Stress is an important risk factor for both gut dysbiosis and depression. Despite evidence of altered gut microbiota composition in patients with depression, little is known about how stress and specific gut microbiota features interact to influence depressive symptoms in healthy individuals. This study examined 398 healthy adults (241 women) who provided stool samples and completed validated questionnaires on perceived stress (PSS) and depressive symptoms (CES-D), with a

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a severe brain development disorder that is characterized by deficits in social communication and restricted, repetitive and stereotyped behaviors. Accumulating evidence has suggested that gut microbiota disorders play important roles in gastrointestinal symptoms and neurodevelopmental dysfunction in ASD patients. Manipulation of the gut microbiota by fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) was recently shown to be a promising therapy for the treatment of various diseases. Here, we performed a clinical trial to evaluate the effect of FMT on gastrointestinal (GI

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the world. The aim of this review is to provide an update on recent epidemiological studies, the molecular mechanisms involved, and ongoing clinical trials investigating the relationship between red meat consumption and colorectal cancer.
RECENT FINDINGS: Evidence in the literature proposes an association between red meat consumption and development of colorectal cancer, and there is some insight with regard to the mechanisms involved. Twenty studies of the IARC report (1990-2015) showed that red meat

Metformin is a first-line therapy for type 2 diabetes, yet therapeutic responses vary widely. Whether gut microbes directly inactivate metformin and limit its efficacy remains unclear. Here, we identify a gut microbial aldehyde-alcohol dehydrogenase, AdhE, from Eubacterium species enriched in individuals with a low response to metformin. AdhE converts metformin to pharmacologically inactive products, lowering intestinal and systemic drug exposure. Genetic deletion of AdhE or phage-mediated depletion of AdhE-producing Eubacterium hallii MD1 restores metformin exposure and glycemic control in mi

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Gut microbiota composition is associated with the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. However, the association between gut microbiota composition and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in non-obese patients remains unclear. We compared clinical parameters and gut microbiota profiles of healthy controls and non-obese and obese patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
METHODS: We examined the clinical parameters and gut microbiota profiles by 16S rRNA sequences and short-chain fatty acid levels in fecal samples from 51 non-obese patients with non-alcoho

Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are accompanied by seronegative arthritis in about one fifth of the cases. In the present study, cell wall fragments from major residents such as Eubacterium, Coprococcus and Peptostreptococcus species, isolated from the faecal flora of patients with Crohn's disease, were tested for properties to induce chronic arthritis in Lewis rats. Cell wall fragments from Eubacterium contortum strains Me44 and Me47 were found to induce chronic arthritis; Peptostreptococcus productus strain C 18 cell wall fragments induced acute self-limiting arthritis. Coprococcus co

BACKGROUND: Gut dysbiosis and gut microbiome-derived metabolites have been implicated in both disease onset and treatment response, but this has been rarely demonstrated in pemphigus vulgaris (PV). Here, we aim to systematically characterize the gut microbiome to assess the specific microbial species and metabolites associated with PV.
METHODS: We enrolled 60 PV patients and 19 matched healthy family members, and collected 100 fecal samples (60 treatment-naïve, 21 matched post-treatment, and 19 controls). Metagenomic shotgun sequencing and subsequent quality control/alignment/annotation were

METHOD: We examined faecal samples, using the GA-map™ Dysbiosis Test, to associate gut microbiota composition with Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) and to identify markers for future biomarker identification. We conducted a prospective case-control study (EU-ref. no. 305676) in an inception cohort of 324 individuals (64 CD, 84 UC, 116 symptomatic non-IBD controls and 44 healthy controls) across five European centres and examined 54 predetermined bacterial markers. We categorized patients according to the Montreal Classification and calculated the dysbiosis index (DI). Non-param

The objective was to investigate the impact of the bioaugmentation on chain elongation process using glycerol, lactate and lactose as substrates in an open culture fermentation. In the batch trials the highest selectivity for chain elongation product, i.e. caproate, was observed in trials inoculated with co-culture of Megasphaera elsdenii and Eubacterium limosum grown on glycerol (28.6%), and in non-bioaugmented open culture run on lactose + lactate (14.8%). The results showed that E. limosum, out of two bioaugmented strains, was able to survive in the open culture. A continuous open culture f

It is evident that quantitative information on different microbial groups and their contribution in terms of activity in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of humans and animals is required in order to formulate functional diets targeting improved gut function and host health. In this work, quantitative information on levels and spatial distributions of Bacteroides spp, Eubacterium spp, Clostridium spp, Escherichia coli, Bifidobacterium spp and Lactobacillus/Enterococcus spp. along the porcine large intestine was investigated using 16S rRNA targeted probes and fluorescent in situ hybridisation (F

In the present study we sought to determine whether serum antibody was present against microorganisms which predominate in the subgingival flora of young adults with generalized severe periodontitis (SP). Subjects with SP were often seropositive for Eubacterium brachy, Fusobacterium nucleatum E3C22, and Peptostreptococcus micros, whereas subjects with juvenile periodontitis (JP) and subjects with healthy periodontium (HP) were not. Both SP and JP subjects were more frequently seropositive for Bacteroides gingivalis, F. nucleatum D52B16, and F. nucleatum E1D1 than were HP subjects. The data wer

BACKGROUND: Alterations in the microbiota-gut-brain axis are associated with the onset of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Numerous studies have reported that the gut microbiota (GM) is significantly altered in individuals with ASD and animal models of ASD. However, few studies have focused on sex-specific differences in the GM and fecal metabolites of ASD.
METHODS: In this study, we performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing and untargeted metabolomics in parallel on fecal samples from a valproic acid (VPA)-induced rat model of autism (VPA rats). Based on these data, we analyzed differentially abunda

To evaluate the role of atmosphere of incubation in the detection of clinically important bacteremia and fungemia in adults, we compared the yield of microorganisms from 10,541 paired 5-ml samples of blood incubated aerobically and anaerobically. The medium, supplemented peptone broth (SPB) with 0.03% sodium polyanetholesulfonate, and the ratio of blood to broth (1:10) were the same for all cultures. Only cultures with adequate blood samples (greater than or equal to 80% of stated volume) were compared statistically. More fungi (P less than 10(-7) ) grew in continuously vented bottles of SPB.

OBJECTIVE: to estimate tje current clinical significance of anaerobic bacteremia in a group of Czech hospitals.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: this retrospective analysis comprised 8 444 anaerobic blood cultures in patients admitted to four Czech hospitals between 2004 and 2007.
RESULTS: in 16 patients, blood cultures yielded significant anaerobic bacteria. Thus, anaerobic bacteremia accounted for less than 2 % of clinically significant bacteremia. Four patients (18 %) died but none of the deaths could be clearly attributable to anaerobic bacteria in the bloodstream. The most common comorbidities pre

The impact of the periodontitis-associated microbiota on lung cancer patients remains controversial and poorly explored. This study aims to characterize the periodontal microbiota in saliva and subgingival plaque of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and healthy volunteers. Twenty-four individuals (12 with NSCLC and 12 healthy controls) were included, matched by age and stage of periodontitis. Periodontal clinical examination, saliva, and subgingival plaque sampling were processed using qPCR techniques to determine culturable and non-culturable periodontopathic microorganisms. Mi

BACKGROUND: While some studies have suggested a link between gut microbiota (GM) and abortion, the causal relationship remains unclear.
METHODS: To explore the causal relationship between GM and abortion, including spontaneous abortion (SA) and habitual abortion (HA), we performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. We used summary statistics data from MiBioGen and FinnGen for genome-wide association studies (GWAS), with GM data as the exposure variable and abortion data as the outcome variable.
RESULTS: In the absence of heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy, the inverse-v
