Vector-borne parasites in dogs from Ukraine translocated to Poland following Russian invasion in 2022.

INTRODUCTION: Since 24 February 2022, the day the Russian aggression against Ukraine began, millions of refugees and thousands of pets crossed the Polish-Ukrainian border. Additionally, an unknown number of shelter and stray dogs and cats were rescued and translocated to Poland by private persons and non-profit organizations. The aim of the present study was to examine rescued dogs and cats for presence of canine vector-borne parasites to determine the role of armed conflict in spreading these parasites. METHODS: In July 2022 blood samples were collected from two animal shelters in central Po

Blood parasites of frogs from an equatorial African montane forest in western Uganda.

In a survey of blood parasites in Ugandan frogs, 30 (17%) of 180 frogs were infected with at least 1 species of Hepatozoon or Trypanosoma, or with microfilariae. There were significant differences in the prevalence of parasitism among species, with parasitemia detected in only 3 of 9 species. The intensity of blood parasite infection ranged from 1 to 1,080 infected cells per 5,000 cells examined. Seasonal changes in the prevalence and intensity of parasitemia were not observed, nor was there any association between parasitemia and infection with the pandemic fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatid

Intestinal co-infection by Cyclospora sp. and Cryptosporidium parvum: first report in an AIDS patient.

Cyclospora is recently described new human pathogenic coccidian causing intermittent diarrhoeal enteritis which may persist for weeks or months in immunocompetent subjects, particularly travellers visiting some tropical areas and countries, such as Nepal, the Caribbean, Peru and Mexico. More rarely this enteric pathogen affects immunocompromised humans, namely HIV-infected people or AIDS patients, with some clinical pictures recognized in normal hosts. We describe the first case of Cyclospora sp. and Cryptosporidium parvum associated diarrhoeal enteritis in an adult AIDS patient.

Genetic diversity and spatial distribution of Hepatozoon spp. in domestic cats from Argentina.

This study reports the first molecular detection of Hepatozoon spp. in domestic cats from central Argentina, expanding current knowledge of its distribution and genetic diversity in South America. Blood samples (n = 257) from domestic cats in Santa Fe, Esperanza, and San José del Rincón were analyzed by PCR targeting the 18S rDNA gene of Hepatozoon spp. Four samples (1.6%) tested positive for Hepatozoon spp. Phylogenetic analyses revealed two distinct lineages: two sequences clustered with Hepatozoon canis, typically found in dogs and transmitted by Rhipicephalus sanguineus, and two were close

Tick-borne pathogens in small mammals from the Pantanal biome, Brazil.

The order Piroplasmida (e.g., Babesia, Theileria, Cytauxzoon, and Rangelia) and order Eucoccidiorida, Suborder Adelorina (e.g., Hepatozoon) comprise protozoa of the phylum Apicomplexa. At the same time, the Anaplasmataceae family (Order Rickettsiales) encompasses important bacterial pathogens, notably the genera Anaplasma and Ehrlichia. All these genera of agents have pathogenic species transmitted to vertebrate hosts via ticks and pose significant economic, veterinary, and medical concerns. Biological samples of small mammals (Rodentia and Didelphiomorphia) collected between 2015 and 2018, as

Cyclospora cayetanensis in sputum and stool samples.

We report the observation of acid-fast Cyclospora cayetanensis oocysts in a sputum sample. The patient, a 60 year-old, HIV negative man, was successfully treated for pulmonary tuberculosis during 1997. On February 1998, he was admitted to our center due to loss of weight, cough with purulent expectoration, dysphonia and a radiological picture of pulmonary fibrosis. Bacilloscopic study of sputum (negative for acid-fast bacilli) stained with Ziehl-Neelsen technique showed large (8-10 microm) spherical, acid-fast Cyclospora cayetanensis oocysts. No other pathogens were isolated on cultures from t

Cyclospora in AIDS patients: not always an agent of diarrhoic syndrome.

The present study reports the clinical features of two AIDS patients infected by Cyclospora. According to our observations, Cyclospora in AIDS can be responsible both for gastroenteritis and for asymptomatic infections with spontaneous rapid clearance. In addition, and undiagnosed circulation of this agent in Italy could be hypothesized: neither patient had a past history of foreign travel. These are the first two cases in AIDS described in Italy.

MORPHOLOGICAL AND MOLECULAR CHARACTERIZATION OF HEPATOZOON SPECIES INFECTING FROGS AND SNAKES ACROSS THE CENTRAL AND EASTERN UNITED STATES.

The genus Hepatozoon Miller, 1908 (Apicomplexa: Adeleorina) includes vector-borne, intracellular blood parasites that infect a wide range of vertebrate hosts, including frogs and snakes. Species identification of bloodstream forms is difficult because there are usually not many morphological characters to distinguish species and gamonts of genetically different isolates. Traditionally, Hepatozoon spp. have been distinguished by characters such as pathology to host erythrocytes and/or developmental stages in the invertebrate vector. However, recent molecular studies are finding that these disti

Screening of Cercopithifilaria bainae and Hepatozoon canis in ticks collected from dogs of Northeastern Brazil.

Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.) is one of the most widespread ixodid ticks and is a competent vector of several vector-borne pathogens of veterinary and medical concern. For instance, this tick species transmits nematodes of the genus Cercopithifilaria and protozoa of the genus Hepatozoon to carnivores, including dogs. Here we investigated the occurrence of Cercopithifilaria spp. and Hepatozoon spp. in a population of ticks collected from naturally infested dogs living in rural areas of Northeastern Brazil. From August 2016 to June 2017, 758 tick specimens (mean ticks per month = 68

Waterborne transmission of Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora and Giardia.

Waterborne transmission of Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora, and Giardia has been associated with numerous recent outbreaks of diarrheal disease. Epidemiologic evidence shows that many community-acquired infections originate from public water sources. Drinking water, even when chlorinated and filtered, has been implicated in several outbreaks. Cryptosporidium and Cyclospora are resistant to chlorine. Giardia cysts are not killed immediately by chlorine and are less susceptible than most other organisms. Swimming pools and other recreational waters have also been implicated as transmission sources.

Cyclospora cayetanensis: first imported infections in Germany.

Over the last decade increasing numbers of enteritis cases have been attributed to infection with a new coccidian species that was named Cyclospora cayetanensis in 1993. Diarrhea caused by this agent is clinically indistinguishable from cryptosporidiosis, isosporiasis and microsporidiosis, but Cyclospora infections are often very prolonged (up to 15 weeks) and may cause severe weight loss. Diagnosis of infection is important because, in contrast to diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium and microsporidia, treatment with co-trimoxazole is effective. Here we report the cases of two female patients,

Hepatozoon caimani Carini, 1909 (Adeleina: Hepatozoidae) in wild population of Caiman yacare Daudin, 1801 (Crocodylia: Alligatoridae), Pantanal, Brazil.

Previous studies showed infections of Hepatozoon caimani in wild populations of caimans in wide regions from Brazil; some of those demonstrated that trophic chain are linked to natural infections through paratenic hosts or by the direct ingestion of vectors. These studies life cycle of H. caimani contributed inestimably to the knowledge of transmission routes, yet but lack enhancement tools for better detail of parasite. This study reports the forms in the blood and tissues, and also partial molecular characterization of the H. caimani following part of the 18S rRNA region. In the southern Pan

Molecular and morphological characterization of a haemogregarine in the alligator snapping turtle, Macrochelys temminckii (Testudines: Chelydridae).

A severely underweight alligator snapping turtle Macrochelys temminckii Troost in Harlan, 1835, was found near Tyler, Texas, and taken to the Caldwell Zoo. Blood films were submitted to Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, for morphological and molecular identification of haemogregarine-like inclusions in the red blood cells. Intraerythrocytic Haemogregarina sp. forms were found on microscopic examination at a parasitemia of <1 %. The morphology and morphometric data for the forms indicate similarity to Haemogregarina macrochelysi n. sp. Telford et al., 2009, previously reported in al

Understanding intestinal spore-forming protozoa: cryptosporidia, microsporidia, isospora, and cyclospora.

OBJECTIVES: To summarize recent information about the "new" gastrointestinal protozoal pathogens (cryptosporidia, microsporidia, isospora, and cyclospora) and to help practicing clinicians integrate this information into their clinical databases by emphasizing the similarities among these organisms. DATA SOURCES: Relevant English-language articles published between 1988 and 1995 were identified through a MEDLINE search done using the names of the intestinal spore-forming protozoa. Articles cited in the bibliographies of these and other articles were searched manually. STUDY SELECTION: Studie

Molecular Epidemiology of Babesia vogeli and Hepatozoon canis in Dogs from Urban and Peri-Urban Areas of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Babesia vogeli is considered endemic in urban settings of Brazil, whereas Hepatozoon canis remains insufficiently documented in several regions, including the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro. This study investigated the frequency, spatial distribution, and determinants of infection by piroplasmids and Hepatozoon spp. in dogs from distinct environments. A total of 372 blood samples from pet dogs were collected between June and October 2023 in Maricá (Area 1; n = 105) and in the Administrative Regions of Barra da Tijuca, Guaratiba, and Jacarepaguá (Area 2; n = 267). Morphometric and Molecular Insights into Hepatozoon spp. in Wild and Synanthropic Rodents from Southern and Southeastern Brazil.

Small rodents are known hosts of various pathogens, including Hepatozoon, but until now, in Brazil, only Hepatozoon milleri has been described in these animals. In this study, liver samples and blood smears were obtained from 289 rodents belonging to 14 Cricetidae and two Muridae species that had been captured in municipalities of the states of Paraná and Rio de Janeiro. Smears were stained with Giemsa, and gametocytes were detected via microscopy in 10.72% (n = 31/289) of samples, with these individuals representing three rodent species. Significant morphometric differences were observed in g

Hepatozoon silvestris sp. nov.: morphological and molecular characterization of a new species of Hepatozoon (Adeleorina: Hepatozoidae) from the European wild cat (Felis silvestris silvestris).

Based on morphological and genetic characteristics, we describe a new species of Hepatozoon in the European wild cat (Felis silvestris silvestris), herein named Hepatozoon silvestris sp. nov. The study also provides the first data on the occurrence of H. felis in this wild felid. Hepatozoon meronts were observed in multiple cross-sections of different organs of four (44%) cats. Additionally, extracellular forms, resembling mature gamonts of Hepatozoon, were found in the spleen and myocardium of two cats. Furthermore, tissues of six animals (67%) were positive by PCR. Hepatozoon felis was ident
