Peptides from Euphausia superba Promote Longitudinal Bone Growth by Accelerating Growth Plate Chondrocyte Proliferation and Hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND: With the improvements in living standards, height is getting more attention. Malnutrition is one of the main causes of children's short stature; therefore, nutritional intervention in adolescence is the key to prevent short stature. The peptides from Antarctic Krill (AKPs), the ideal protein model, act in bone formation and anti-osteoporosis. However, the studies on promoting longitudinal bone growth by AKPs have not been reported. METHODS: Three-week-old male ICR mice, to construct the adolescent mice model, randomly divided into three groups: normal group, casein group (casein,

Stability strategy of astaxanthin in Antarctic krill muscle: Insights from proteomics and docking simulation.

Astaxanthin is the most representative bioactive substance of Antarctic krill. However, the intrinsic stabilization mechanism mediated by endogenous soluble protein fractions in krill muscle has yet to be elucidated at the molecular level. In this study, the binding capacity of different solubilizing fractions to astaxanthin was significantly different (p < 0.05). The linear, non-saturating binding curves of fractions B, D, and F suggested a typical non-specific, multi-site surface adsorption mechanism. Electrophoretic protein profiles of the six solubilized fractions were readily distinguisha

Krill oil prevents lipopolysaccharide-evoked acute liver injury in mice through inhibition of oxidative stress and inflammation.

Acute liver injury is a life-threatening syndrome that often results from the actions of viruses, drugs and toxins. Herein, the protective effect and potential mechanism of krill oil (KO), a novel natural product rich in long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids bound to phospholipids and astaxanthin, on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-evoked acute liver injury in mice were investigated. Male C57BL/6J mice were administered intragastrically with 400 mg kg-1 KO or fish oil (FO) once per day for 28 consecutive days prior to LPS exposure (10 mg kg-1, intraperitoneally injected). The results revealed th

Melatonin and its possible role in mediating seasonal metabolic changes of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba.

Melatonin, the chief secretory product of the vertebrate pineal gland is suspected to be a ubiquitous molecule principally involved in the transduction of photoperiodic information. Besides vertebrates, melatonin has been detected throughout phylogeny in numerous non-vertebrate taxa. In the present study, the occurrence of melatonin in Antarctic krill Euphausia superba and its possible role in mediating seasonal metabolic changes was evaluated. Melatonin was quantified by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) purified extracts of eyestalks a

Decolorization of Antarctic krill hydrolysate for salt reduction in surimi gel: improvement of taste, gel properties, and flavor profile.

This study developed an efficient decolorization process based on a GA-BP neural network for treating Antarctic krill hydrolysate. It achieved a decolorization rate of 93.31% while effectively preserving functional components such as peptides and amino acids. The decolorized hydrolysate (AKP) was applied as a salt substitute in low-salt surimi. The results demonstrated that AKP significantly altered the amino acid composition, with the level of umami amino acids increasing 5-fold and the content of 5'-GMP surging nearly 15-fold. Electronic tongue and sensory evaluation analysis confirmed that

Effects of combination of krill oil with curcumin and/or silymarin on mouse non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

No effective pharmacological therapy is available for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The use of natural products is an alternative therapeutic. The natural antioxidants such as curcumin and silymarin are used in clinical trials against non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which are hampered by their membrane permeability and consequent low absorption. The amphipathic phospholipid is beneficial to their absorption and antarctic krill oil contains rich phospholipids. We demonstrated that the mixture (antarctic krill oil, curcumin, and silymarin) exhibited remarkable roles in inhibiting high-fa

Krill oil alleviates type 2 diabetes mellitus-induced sarcopenia in mice via attenuating insulin resistance, intestinal barrier dysfunction, and skeletal muscle protein turnover impairment.

Krill oil (KO), a source of EPA, DHA, phospholipids, and astaxanthin, has emerged as a promising functional ingredient to maintain skeletal muscle health. However, its protective role against type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)-induced sarcopenia has remained poorly characterized. Hence, the present study aimed to investigate the protective effects and underlying mechanisms of KO against sarcopenia in both a T2DM mouse model induced by the combination of streptozotocin and high-fat, high-sucrose diet, and a C2C12 myotube atrophy model induced by high glucose (HG), advanced glycation end products (

Effects of a purified krill oil phospholipid rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids on cardiovascular disease risk factors in non-human primates with naturally occurring diabetes type-2 and dyslipidemia.

BACKGROUND: High serum levels of cholesterol, in particular low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, are considered a significant risk factor for development of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, rigorous treatment regimens with statins and other pharmaceuticals have been used extensively to reduce elevated cholesterol levels. Literature data have not clearly concluded whether long-chain omega-3 fatty acids reduce, increase or leave circulating cholesterol unaffected. In the present study a novel krill-oil derived preparation of omega-3 rich phospholipids, mainly phosphatidylcholine, was administe

Identification of an Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) peptide with immunoregulatory activity.

Antarctic krill is a rich source of bioactive peptides with potential immunomodulatory properties. In this study, in vitro and in vivo models were used to evaluate the immunoregulatory effects of Antarctic krill enzymatic hydrolysates. Among the hydrolysates produced using different enzymes, the neutral protease yielded the highest degree of hydrolysis and most effectively promoted the proliferation of RAW264.7 macrophages. The hydrolysate was further fractionated by ultrafiltration and Sephadex G-15 chromatography, resulting in the isolation of a highly active fraction, NAKP-A, which signific

Potential of Marine Bacterial Metalloprotease A69 in the Preparation of Antarctic Krill Peptides with Multi-Bioactivities.

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is a nutrient-rich marine resource. Although several terrestrial proteases have been used to prepare Antarctic krill peptides (AKPs), there has been no report on the preparation of AKPs using a marine protease. Here, marine bacterial protease A69 was used to prepare AKPs with multi-bioactivities. Through optimizing hydrolysis parameters, we established a process for AKPs preparation by hydrolyzing Antarctic krill powder with A69. In the prepared AKPs, peptides less than 3000 Da and 1000 Da accounted for 99.23% and 88.37%, respectively. The scavenging ratios

The Acute and Delayed Mortality of the Northern Krill (Meganyctiphanes norvegica) When Exposed to Hydrogen Peroxide.

Bath treatment pharmaceuticals used to control sea lice infestations in the salmonid industry, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), are released directly into the environment where non-target organisms are at risk of exposure. The aim of this study was to determine the threshold concentrations for mortality of the Northern krill, Meganyctiphanes norvegica, a major component of the north Atlantic marine ecosystem. To assess the lethal effects of H2O2, we carried out a series of 1 h acute toxicity tests and assessed mortality through a 48 h post-exposure period. One-hour exposure to 170 mg/L, corre

Prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study on safety and tolerability of the krill powder product in overweight subjects with moderately elevated blood pressure.

BACKGROUND: Krill powder is rich in bioactive ingredients such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), phospholipids, protein and astaxanthin. Containing dominantly EPA, it is considered to be effective in lowering lipids, foremost serum triglycerides and LDL cholesterol. Krill-derived protein hydrolysates/peptides may have positive effect on blood pressure and astaxanthin has anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. Thus, krill powder has a lot of potential in improving lipid and metabolic profile and reinforcing the activity of the antioxidant system. However, ran

Dietary krill oil supplementation reduces hepatic steatosis, glycemia, and hypercholesterolemia in high-fat-fed mice.

Krill oil (KO) is rich in n-3 fatty acids that are present in phospholipids rather than in triglycerides. In the present study, we investigated the effects of dietary KO on cardiometabolic risk factors in male C57BL/6 mice fed a high-fat diet. Mice (n = 6-10 per group) were fed for 8 weeks either: (1) a nonpurified chow diet (N); (2) a high-fat semipurified diet containing 21 wt % buttermilk + 0.15 wt % cholesterol (HF); (3) HF supplemented with 1.25 wt % KO (HFKO1.25); (4) HF with 2.5 wt % KO (HFKO2.5); or (5) HF with 5 wt % KO (HFKO5.0). Dietary KO supplementation caused a significant reduct

Chronic treatment with krill powder reduces plasma triglyceride and anandamide levels in mildly obese men.

We have previously shown that treatment of Zucker rats and mice with diet-induced obesity with dietary docosahexaenoic (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic (EPA) acids in the form of krill oil reduces peripheral levels of endocannabinoids, ectopic fat formation and hyperglycemia. We reported that such treatment reduces plasma endocannabinoid levels also in overweight and obese human individuals, in whom high triglycerides may correlate with high circulating endocannabinoid levels. In this study, we report the effects of krill powder, which contains proteins (34%) in addition to krill oil (61.8%), on the

Preparation and anti-inflammatory activity of specific selenium chelated peptides from Antarctic krill.

This study has successfully developed selenium-chelated peptides (Se-AKPs) from Antarctic krill for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Antarctic krill peptides (AKPs) were prepared by alkaline protease hydrolysis and then chelated with sodium selenite to produce Se-AKPs. Following chelation, characterization revealed a red shift in UV absorption, decreased fluorescence intensity and a reduction in β-sheet content. In vitro experiments showed that Se-AKPs at a concentration of 0.1 mg mL-1 significantly reduced lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide (NO) release in RAW264.7 cell
