Echinococcus multilocularis: an emerging pathogen in Hungary and Central Eastern Europe?

Echinococcus multilocularis, the causative agent of human alveolar echinococcosis, is reported for the first time in Red Foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in Hungary. This parasite may be spreading eastward because the population of foxes has increased as a consequence of human interventions, and this spread may result in the emergence of alveolar echinococcosis in Central Eastern Europe.

Antibiotic use in eastern Europe: a cross-national database study in coordination with the WHO Regional Office for Europe.

BACKGROUND: There are no reliable data on antibiotic use in non-European Union (EU) southern and eastern European countries and newly independent states. We aimed to collect valid, representative, comparable data on systemic antimicrobial use in these non-EU countries of the WHO European region. METHODS: Validated 2011 total national wholesale antibiotic-use data of six southern and eastern European countries and regions and seven newly independent states were analysed in accordance with the WHO anatomical therapeutic chemical (ATC)/defined daily doses (DDD) method and expressed in DDD/1000 i

Environmental noise and sleep disturbance: research in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and Newly Independent States.

Countries from South-East Europe (SEE), Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and Newly Independent States (NIS) are in the process of harmonization with European environmental noise legislation. However, research work on noise and health was performed in some countries independently of harmonization process of adoption and implementation of legislation for environmental noise. Aim of this review is to summarize available evidence for noise induced sleep disturbance in population of CEE, SEE and NIS countries and to give directions for further research work in this field. After a systematic search

The status of hepatitis C microelimination among people living with HIV in Central and Eastern Europe in 2022 - data from Euroguidelines in Central and Eastern Europe Network Group.

INTRODUCTION: The implementation of nationwide viral hepatitis C elimination programs is challenging in Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC). It is reasonable to start by targeting specific populations, such as people living with HIV (PLWH), who are at higher risk of acquiring HCV or developing HCV-related complications. METHODS: Euroguidelines in Central and Eastern Europe Network Group consists of experts in the field of infectious diseases from 26 countries in the region. Between April 26th and June 23rd 2023, the group performed an on-line survey consisting of 32 questions. The q

Environmental noise and annoyance in adults: research in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and Newly Independent States.

Research work on the adverse effects of noise on annoyance in adults is well documented in Western Europe, but there is a knowledge gap concerning this type of research in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), South-East Europe (SEE), and Newly Independent States (NIS). The objective of this review was to present findings and to propose future research directions for the studies on the effects of environmental noise on annoyance in adults conducted in these countries. After systematic search in accessible databases, scientific journals, conference proceedings, international and national reports in

HIV/AIDS in eastern Europe: more than a sexual health crisis.

HIV/AIDS is often described as a sexually transmitted disease. In the former USSR, however, the HIV/AIDS epidemic is being driven by injecting drug use among men. This article addresses several widely circulated assumptions about HIV in eastern Europe: that sexual contact is the primary mode of transmission, that women form a major increasing proportion of those infected, and that the disease threatens young people in particular. Because the rate of injecting drug use is extremely high in many eastern European countries, HIV control there cannot just target sexual transmission but must embrace

Multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis in HIV positive patients in Eastern Europe.

Observational data from Eastern Europe on the management and outcome of multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) in HIV positive populations remain sparse in the English-language literature. We compared clinical characteristics and outcomes of 55 patients who were diagnosed with HIV and MDR TB in Eastern Europe between 2004 and 2006 to 89 patients whose Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates were susceptible to isoniazid and rifampicin. Patients with HIV and MDR TB were young and predominantly male with high rates of intravenous drug use, imprisonment and hepatitis C co-infection. Eighty-four p

Tick-host-Borrelia population interactions: long-term records in Eastern Europe.

During 10 spring and summer seasons (1992-2001), the dynamics of the epizootic process in natural foci were studied in taiga forests of the Pre-Ural region, Russia. In these foci, Borrelia garinii, Borrelia afzelii and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus circulate transmitted by their main vector tick, Ixodes persulcatus. Main parameters of the epizootic process were calculated for each season. In three seasons (1993, 1996, and 1999) all parameters characterizing the abundance of unfed nymphs and adult ticks, as well as the prevalence of Borrelia and TBE virus in them, increased sharply and si

GWAS and polygenic risk score of severe COVID-19 in Eastern Europe.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 disease has infected more than 772 million people, leading to 7 million deaths. Although the severe course of COVID-19 can be prevented using appropriate treatments, effective interventions require a thorough research of the genetic factors involved in its pathogenesis. METHODS: We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on 7,124 individuals (comprising 6,400 controls who had mild to moderate COVID-19 and 724 cases with severe COVID-19). The inclusion criteria were acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), acute respiratory failure (ARF) requiring respiratory s

Long-term outcomes after tuberculosis for people with HIV in eastern Europe.

BACKGROUND: Eastern Europe has a high burden of tuberculosis (TB)/HIV coinfection with high mortality shortly after TB diagnosis. This study assesses TB recurrence, mortality rates and causes of death among TB/HIV patients from Eastern Europe up to 11 years after TB diagnosis. METHODS: A longitudinal cohort study of TB/HIV patients enrolled between 2011 and 2013 (at TB diagnosis) and followed-up until end of 2021. A competing risk regression was employed to assess rates of TB recurrence, with death as competing event. Kaplan-Meier estimates and a multivariable Cox-regression were used to asse

The heart microbiome of insectivorous bats from Central and South Eastern Europe.

Host associated microbiome not only may affect the individual health-status or provide insights into the species- or group specific bacterial communities but may act as early warning signs in the assessment of zoonotic reservoirs, offering clues to predict, prevent and control possible episodes of emerging zoonoses. Bats may be carriers and reservoirs of multiple pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, showing in the same time robust immunity against many of them. The microbiota plays a fundamental role on the induction, training and function of the host immune system and the immune

The challenges of managing and following-up a case of short bowel in eastern europe.

INTRODUCTION: This article reflects on the plight of patients with short bowel syndrome (SBS) in developing countries. SBS is life threatening, rare, complex and often not considered a priority by healthcare planners in the developing countries because of the high cost of treatment. Data was collected and analyzed from 3 different hospitals in two different countries (Romania and Austria) from November 2013 to February 2016 CASE PRESENTATION: The patient had an emergency surgery for volvulus as a result of an extensive ischemic necrosis, with just 80cm of the bowel left and no ileocecal valve

Problems to control TB in eastern Europe and consequences in low incidence countries.

The regular decline in tuberculosis (TB) notification rates observed in the majority of industrialised countries over the past decades has levelled off or reversed in recent years in both the USA and in Europe, where relevant differences between Central/Eastern and Western countries have become more and more apparent. In the countries of the Central and Eastern European sub-region, notification rates have ceased to decline or markedly increased since the 1990s, particularly in the Baltic States, in Romania, Russian Federation and other countries belonging to the previous USSR. The evaluation o

Changing pattern of end-stage renal disease in central and eastern Europe.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is changing all over the world. Particularly dramatic changes of the epidemiology of ESRD have occurred in central and eastern Europe (CEE). The aim of the present study was (i) to document the further expansion of renal replacement therapy (RRT) noted in recent years in CEE and (ii) to analyse in some detail treatment modalities and underlying renal conditions. METHODS: Three independent surveys were performed in 1995, 1997 and 1998. Fifteen CEE countries participated. The data were mainly obtained from national registries which

Tick-borne infections in wolves from an expanding population in Eastern Europe.

In Central and Eastern Europe, wolf populations have been increasing over the last two decades, recolonizing areas from which the species had been previously exterminated. As wolves are still recovering after years of persecution by humans, recognizing pathogens infecting this species, including tick-borne infections, is crucial for its conservation. On the other hand the high mobility of wolves and their frequent contacts with humans, dogs, and other domestic species make them a potentially important zoonotic reservoir. In this paper, we used molecular methods to determine the prevalence of t
