Applicability of the European Society of Cardiology guidelines on management of acute coronary syndromes to people with haemophilia - an assessment by the ADVANCE Working Group.

There are no evidence-based guidelines for antithrombotic management in people with haemophilia (PWH) presenting with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The aim of the study was to review the current European Society of Cardiology guidelines, and to consider how best they should be adapted for PWH. Structured communication techniques based on a Delphi-like methodology were used to achieve expert consensus on key aspects of clinical management. The main final statements are as follows: (i) ACS and myocardial revascularization should be managed promptly by a multidisciplinary team that includes a ha

Sexual uses of alcohol and drugs and the associated health risks: a cross sectional study of young people in nine European cities.

BACKGROUND: Young people in European countries are experiencing high levels of alcohol and drug use and escalating levels of sexually transmitted infections. Individually these represent major public health priorities. Understanding of the association between sex and substance use, and specifically the strategic roles for which young people utilise substances to facilitate sexual activity, remains limited. METHODS: Respondent driven sampling methodology was used in nine European cities to survey 1,341 16-35 year olds representing youth and younger adults who routinely engage in nightlife. Par

Trends in waterpipe and e-cigarette use among young people in the European Union, 2012-2023: a repeated cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Alternative tobacco and nicotine-containing products can challenge progress in tobacco control. Waterpipes and e-cigarettes gained popularity among youth at different times, driven by flavours, social influence, and perceived reduced harm. This study examined trends in waterpipe and e-cigarette use among youth in the European Union (EU) from 2012 to 2023. METHODS: We analysed data from five waves (2012-2023) of the Special Eurobarometer surveys in 26 EU Member States (N = 20,466; ages 15-30). Multilevel Poisson models assessed trends by sociodemographic subgroups, adjusting for co

Relationships Between Motives for Cannabis and Cannabidiol Use in People Who Co-Use: Results From the European Web Survey on Drugs.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis is one of the most commonly used psychoactive substances globally. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-intoxicating cannabis compound increasingly used for various purposes, especially among cannabis users. However, to date, there are no data on the relationships between cannabis and CBD motives. Understanding these relationships and characterising people who co-use cannabis and CBD by their motives can help adapt marketing policies and foster CBD-based harm reduction practices for people who use cannabis. METHODS: We selected cannabis users from the third wave of the European W

"Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis," Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and lyme disease spirochetes in questing european vector ticks and in feeding ticks removed from people.

To estimate the likelihood of people coming into contact with the recently described tick-borne agent "Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis," we compared its prevalence to those of Lyme disease spirochetes and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in questing adult Ixodes ricinus ticks collected in various Central European sites and examined ticks, which had been removed from people, for the presence of these pathogens. Whereas spirochetes infected questing adult ticks most frequently (22.3%), fewer than a third as many ticks were infected by "Ca. Neoehrlichia mikurensis" (6.2%), and about a sixth harbored

Associations of common variants in the BST2 region with HIV-1 acquisition in African American and European American people who inject drugs.

OBJECTIVE: The bone marrow stromal cell antigen 2 (BST2) gene encodes a host restriction factor that acts as an innate immune sensor of HIV-1 exposure and suppresses release of HIV-1 particles. We aimed to identify associations of variants in the BST2 gene region with HIV-1 acquisition and disease progression. DESIGN/METHODS: Using HIV+ cases and HIV- controls from the Urban Health Study (n=3136 African Americans and European Americans who inject drugs), we tested 470 variants in BST2 and its flanking regions for association with HIV-1 acquisition and log-transformed viral load. RESULTS: We
