Acupressure Bead in the Eustachian Tube.

In this article, we aim to enlighten practitioners and patients involved with acupressure beads and to contribute to their safer use by reporting a unique case of insidious intrusion of an acupressure bead into the eustachian tube. A metallic object was found in the eustachian tube of a patient while conducting a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination. The object was later confirmed to be an auricular acupressure bead, and was successfully removed by performing a tympanoplasty and a canal wall down mastoidectomy. The bead was assumed to have passed through an existing perforation of the

Impact of evolution on the eustachian tube.

I posit that humans appear to be the only species that develops otitis media. If animals in the wild had developed middle-ear disease to any significant degree, they would have been selected out during evolution because they would not have survived their predators given the associated hearing loss. Why do humans have otitis media? Evolution has had a significant impact. It is well known that humans are born 12 months too early, which is the result of adaptations to bipedalism and our big brain that, over time, resulted in a relatively small female pelvic outlet compared with nonhuman primates.

Endoscopic closure of the eustachian tube.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) otorhinorrhea can rarely complicate lateral skull base surgery, necessitating sealing of the eustachian tube. Patulous eustachian tube (pET) can also be an indication for closure of the eustachian tube. METHODS: Representative cases and the technique will be described. RESULTS: The authors describe a technique used in three cases of CSF otorhinorrhea and one case of pET to successfully close the eustachian tube. CONCLUSIONS: Previous reports have described methods of eustachian tube closure utilizing nasal endoscopic techniques. These techniques have re

Valve section of the eustachian tube.

Research on the eustachian tube (ET) and related paratubal structures was carried out by serial section of the temporal bone-ET specimens. In the cadaveric studies, the mid-cartilaginous section of the ET presented a curved slit-like lumen. It is believed that this section functions principally as a valve mechanism and acts like an active sphincter of the ET. This report illustrates the dynamic movement of the valve section in a living ET which can be observed by using a superfine fibreoptic videomicroendoscope. Disorders of the open-close mechanism of the valve section in a diseased ET due to

Hairy polyp of the eustachian tube.

The hairy polyp of the nasopharynx is a rare but potential cause of airway obstruction in the newborn. A case of hairy polyp arising off the Eustachian tube is reported. Only eight prior cases of Eustachian tube origin have been described in the literature. The terminology and embryology of these tumors are included in the discussion. The site of the tumor and histopathology of this case supports the embryologic origin of a congenital inclusion cyst.

Eustachian tube function in the chinchilla.

Eustachian tube function (ETF) was evaluated in 22 ears of 18 chinchillas using the inflation-deflation and forced-response protocols. The results of the ETF tests showed an unusual function in the chinchilla. Of the 22 tests, one indicated a patulous eustachian tube (ET) and 20 suggested a semipatulous ET. This was evidenced by a passive, pressure-dependent, complete reduction of applied positive or negative ME pressures in these ears. This phenomenon has no counterpart in the ETF of rhesus monkeys or humans. Discrete changes in the continual leakage of applied pressures, indicative of active

Balloon Eustachian Tuboplasty Combined or Not with Myringotomy in Eustachian Tube Dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) is a common disorder causing ear pressure, pain, and hearing loss. Balloon Eustachian tuboplasty (BET) is an emerging technique for dilating the Eustachian tube and treating ETD. Whether adding myringotomy improves BET efficacy is controversial. METHODS: This retrospective study included 95 ETD patients undergoing BET alone (n = 44) or BET with myringotomy (BET + M; n = 51) between June 2020 and August 2021 at a single medical center. The primary outcome was the change in ETDQ-7 symptom scores from baseline to 6 months after treatment. Secondary o

Laser Eustachian Tuboplasty for Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: a case series review.

The authors reviewed the literature regarding the safety and efficacy of Laser Eustachian Tuboplasty (LETP) in the treatment of Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD). Medline via Pubmed, OvidSP and Science Direct were consulted, with a supplementary manual review of citations. English language case series constituted a baseline for inclusion. Primary outcome measures were pre- and post-operative tympanometry, otoscopy findings, subjective symptoms and pure tone audiometry, and findings were stratified into short term (≤6 months) and long term (>6 months-5 years). Eight unique case series were iden

Computed tomography findings of the bony portion of the Eustachian tube with or without patulous Eustachian tube patients.

To investigate the bony segment of the Eustachian tube (ET) using sitting 3D-computed tomography (CT) scans in Patulous Eustachian tube (PET) patients. A retrospective survey of medical records in Sen-En Hospital identified 43 patients and 43 ears with PET and 30 patients and 30 ears with sensorineural hearing loss or vertigo patients as the control. Diagnosis of PET was based on the Proposal on PET Diagnosis Criteria announced by the Otological Society of Japan in 2012. Patients were examined by cone beam CT (Accuitomo; Morita, Kyoto, Japan) in the sitting position. The heights and widths at

Eustachian Tube Teratoma: A Rare Entity.

INTRODUCTION: Teratomas, tumors derived from all 3 fetal germ cell layers, are rarely located in the head and neck region and extremely rare in the Eustachian tube area. CASE REPORT: The authors present the case of a 2 years old child with chronic ear discharge. Referral diagnosis was tumor or cyst of the temporal bone. Intraoperatively, a solid, hairy tumor located inside the Eustachain tube, with extension into the middle ear space was discovered and removed. Histology revealed a mature teratoma. Review of the literature showed reports of rare similar cases of Eustachian tube teratomas, dif

Advances in Eustachian tube function testing.

Obstructive and patulous Eustachian tube dysfunction provide a significant diagnostic and management challenge. The development of new treatments such as balloon Eustachian tuboplasty has generated renewed interest in measuring Eustachian tube function, as a method of selecting appropriate patients for intervention, and measuring their treatment outcomes. This review summarises recent findings relating to Eustachian tube function assessment. Increasingly it is recognised that patient reported outcome measures based on symptoms are highly non-specific and non-diagnostic, and clinical assessment

[Eustachian tube and middle ear mechanics].

Even the most sophisticated prostheses for reconstruction of the ossicular chain do not work in the presence of Eustachian tube dysfunction. This review gives an update on the mechanisms of middle ear pressure regulation and middle ear ventilation, as well as methods for measuring the opening and closing function of the Eustachian tube. So far, in most tube function tests pressures are applied far beyond the physiological range in order to open the tube or force it to open. New methods like sonotubometry with perfect sequences (PSEQ) or the application of pressure in the nasopharynx with the E

Neural control of eustachian tube function.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: It has been hypothesized that middle ear pressure can be controlled by the Eustachian tube through a neuronal reflex arc in animal models. We aimed to define the role of the neuronal control mechanisms in regulating middle ear pressure in humans. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study. METHODS: The study population consisted of 95 ears of 95 volunteers. The mechanoreceptors on the tympanic membrane and the baroreceptors in the middle ear, which are assumed to form the afferent plexus of the neuronal reflex arc, were blocked by topical administration of lidocaine hydrochloride

Patulous Eustachian tube associated with hemodialysis.

The objective of the present study is to demonstrate that hemodialysis (HD) is a possible causal factor for patulous Eustachian tube (ET). We present a representative case report and results of a mass examination in the HD unit. The present patient (a 55-year-old woman) reported aural fullness and autophony were often experienced after HD. The findings of eardrum and ET function tests revealed that her patulous ET condition was observed soon after HD and then disappeared until the next HD. A survey in the HD unit was carried out to identify patients who noticed patulous symptoms after HD. Pati
