Predictive value of brain-stem auditory evoked potentials in children with post-traumatic coma produced by diffuse brain injury.

In the present study, brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) in 31 children in post-traumatic coma with diffuse brain injury were examined. The BAEPs were recorded in the first 72 h after hospital admission and the findings of 29 patients related to the level of neurological recovery at 6 months after head injury. On the basis of the results, children were divided into three groups: the first consisted of children with bilateral and normal BAEPs (n = 19); the second of those with asymmetrical BAEPs (n = 6); and the third of those in whom BAEPs has disappeared or in whom only responses o

Reappearance of brain-stem auditory evoked potentials after surgical treatment of a brain-stem hemorrhage: contributions to the question of wave generation.

We report on a patient suffering a spontaneous hemorrhage primarily located in the right brain-stem; surgical correction of this led to a substantial improvement in clinical deficits. Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded on postoperative days 18, 30, 55 and 205. Waves II through V were initially undetectable on stimulation of the damaged side, whereas the absence of peak V was the only abnormality seen on left-side stimulation. With the regression of the right lower mid-pontine deficits, the right waves gradually reappeared and normalized progressively. On the last recor

Preservation of hearing in operations on acoustic tumors: an alternative to recording brain stem auditory evoked potentials.

The monitoring of auditory function by recording brain stem auditory evoked potentials in patients undergoing removal of acoustic tumors is hampered by the small amplitude of the brain stem auditory evoked potentials. Because several thousands of responses must be added, it takes several minutes to obtain an interpretable record. Recordings done directly from the exposed eighth nerve have much higher amplitudes, and, therefore, interpretable responses can be obtained after only a few responses have been added. However, it is difficult to place the recording electrode in an optimal position and

Monitoring therapeutic efficacy of decompressive craniotomy in space occupying cerebellar infarcts using brain-stem auditory evoked potentials.

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) have been used to gauge effects of brain-stem dysfunction in humans and animal models. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of BAEP in monitoring patients undergoing decompressive surgery of the posterior fossa for space occupying cerebellar infarcts. We report on serial BAEP recordings in 11 comatose patients with space occupying cerebellar infarcts undergoing decompressive craniotomy. BAEP studies were performed within 12 h after admission, 24 h following surgery and prior to extubation. BAEP signals were analyzed using latenc

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a case of facial myokymia.

The case of a 37-year-old woman with facial myokymia is reported. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electromyography (EMG) and brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) supported the clinical diagnosis of suspected multiple sclerosis (MS). MRI showed a single area of abnormal signal in the pontine region. The authors discuss the possible relationship between the brain-stem lesion and the electrophysiological abnormalities demonstrated by BAEPs and the EMG of facial muscles.

A comparative study of brain-stem auditory evoked potentials and blink reflexes in posterior fossa tumor patients.

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP's) and blink reflexes (BR's) were recorded from 40 patients with clinical and radiological evidence of posterior fossa tumors. They were examined in three groups according to the anatomical location of the lesion: Group A included 15 patients with midline tumors; Group B included 14 patients with cerebellar hemispheric tumors; and Group C included 11 patients with cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumors. More of the 40 patients had BAEP abnormalities (32) than BR abnormalities (24). All of the 11 patients with CPA tumors had some kind of BAEP and BR abno

Brain stem auditory evoked potentials: effects of ovarian steroids correlated with increased incidence of Bell's palsy in pregnancy.

To investigate the effect of ovarian steroids on the brain stem during changes of estrogen and progesterone blood levels, we recorded brain stem auditory evoked potentials with increased stimulus rates from 26 women treated for sterility by menotropins (Pergonal and Metrodin). These women were divided into three groups according to their estrogen and progesterone blood levels. The brain stem auditory evoked potential results revealed a significant delay of peak III only, with an increased stimulus rate in the group with the highest estrogen level. Estrogen may cause a brain stem synaptic impai

Brain stem auditory evoked potentials in patients with multiple system atrophy with progressive autonomic failure (Shy-Drager syndrome).

Brain stem potentials from three groups of patients, namely those with pure progressive autonomic failure, Parkinson's disease and multisystem atrophy with progressive autonomic failure (Shy-Drager syndrome) were compared with each other and a group of normal subjects. In virtually all the patients with multisystem atrophy with progressive autonomic failure the brain stem potentials were abnormal in contrast to normal findings with Parkinson's disease. The closely associated group of patients with progressive autonomic failure alone also revealed no abnormalities of the BAEP. This separation o

[Short-latency brain stem auditory evoked potentials in response to acoustic stimulation in children with cranio-cerebral trauma].

Short-latent stem evoked potentials (SSEP) in response to acoustic stimulation (AS) were explored in 44 children with mild craniocerebral injury. The majority of patients demonstrated an increase of the latent period of peaks P1, P3 and P5 and of the interpeak intervals P1-P3 and P1-P5. In patients with loss of consciousness, the parameters of the SSEP in response to AS were larger to the left as compared to those rightwards. Depending on the side of the stroke (whether it occurred to the right or to the left), it has been disclosed that the latent period of P3 and the interpeak interval P1-P3

[Brain stem auditory evoked potentials in tumors of the posterior parts of the 3d ventricle and pineal gland].

Dynamic studies (one to six times) of stem generated potentials (SGP) to acoustic stimulation were conducted in 32 patients with tumors of the posterior parts of the third ventricle and the pineal gland. In tumors of this localization, the SGP underwent pathological changes in 90% of cases: the response latency increased, its amplitude reduced more or less coarsely (even to complete abaissement of the peaks), and the time intervals between the peaks increased. Dynamic studies of SGP to acoustic stimulation may help the surgeon in making the diagnosis and prove valuable in appraising the functi

An ischemic opening of the blood-brain barrier may deteriorate brain stem auditory evoked potentials following transient hindbrain ischemia in gerbils.

To clarify the effect of vasogenic brain edema on the brainstem, the relationships between waveform changes in brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disturbance following transient hindbrain ischemia were investigated. Hindbrain ischemia was induced in gerbils by bilateral occlusion of the vertebral arteries. The animals were divided into three groups subjected to 0, 5, and 30 min of bilateral vertebral occlusion (BVO-0',-5', and -30' groups; n = 4 in each group). Two hours after recirculation, Evans blue (EB) solution was injected into the saphenous vein. T

[Lateralization of secondary lesions of the brain stem in stroke by the method of short-latency auditory evoked potentials].

Twenty-seven patients with acute cerebral circulation disorders (ACCD) in large hemispheres and 4 patients with ACCD in the cerebellum were examined by means of short-latent acoustic evoked potentials (SAEP). The signs of the secondary stem syndrome were recorded in the neurological status of all the patients. Computer-aided tomography discovered displacement of the median structures of varying degree and deformation of cisternal spaces of the stem. The data obtained allowed a conclusion about a possibility of lateralization of the side of a greater injury to the stem by means of SAEP. As a ru

Limitations of brain stem auditory evoked potentials for intraoperative monitoring during a posterior fossa operation: case report and technical note.

We have encountered an example of the insensitivity of brain stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) for monitoring the brain stem during a posterior fossa operation. The addition of somatosensory evoked potential recording to conventional BAEP protocols is readily accomplished and is likely to improve the sensitivity of intraoperative electrophysiological assessment of brain stem function.

Brain-stem auditory evoked potential monitoring. The increase of the stimulus artifact in the development of brain death: a biological phenomenon?

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded in 12 dead subjects (mean age, 72.6 +/- 14.8 years), 30.6 +/- 19.5 hours (range 9-70) after abolished systemic circulation. Death was due to cardiac failure (n = 10), intracerebral hemorrhage (n = 1) and larynx cancer (n = 1). The presence and amplitude of the stimulus artifact were evaluated. The mean (+/- SD) amplitudes of the stimulus artifact was 0.03 +/- 0.02 microV on the left side and 0.01 +/- 0.02 microV on the right side. These findings in accordance with previous studies on comatose patients and brain dead subjects confirm t

[The use of brain stem auditory evoked potentials and electromyography in the monitoring of cranial nerves during skull base surgery].

Cranial nerves and the brainstem are at risk of being injured during skull base operations. The result might be the patient's death or severe neurological deficits. Brainstem auditory evoked potential is an accepted method of intraoperative auditory nerve or brainstem monitoring. Other cranial nerves are monitored using electromyography and evoked muscle activity recorded from appropriated muscle groups.
