PURPOSE: To investigate how central retinal function contributes to pattern visual evoked cortical potentials (PVECPs), we recorded transient and steady-state PVECPs in patients with macular disease and compared the results with those of patients with optic neuritis. The results were also evaluated for correlation with visual acuity and kinetic perimetric measurements.
METHODS: PVECPs to 3 rev/s stimulation (transient) and 12 rev/s stimulation (steady-state) for check sizes 15' and 30' were obtained from all patients and age-matched healthy controls. The peak latency and amplitude of the P100

The term visually evoked potential (VEP) refers to electrical potentials recorded from scalp overlying visual cortex that have been extracted from the electroencephalogram by signal averaging. Usually the recording electrode is placed on the midline of the occipital scalp at the back of the head. VEPs are used to quantify the functional integrity of the optic nerves, pathways to the visual cortex of the brain, and occipital cortex. Any abnormality that affects the visual pathways or visual cortex in the brain can affect the VEP. Examples include slowing neuronal transmission, such as produced

Under the pathological conditions, the VEP may show changes in amplitude, latency, or waveform in one or more of its components. The major advantage of the pattern reversal VEP over the flash VEP lies in smaller variability in the waveform and latency of its components in the healthy population. The flash VEP is, however, particularly useful to infants and newborns. The variation in the waveform of the flash VEP was evaluated, and Type V was abnormal waveform. Subsequently, patients with various CNS diseases were examined. Acute hemiplegic patients showed high amplitude or increased latency pa

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) are electrophysiologic responses to pattern or flash stimuli, recorded over the occiput. VEPs can provide information regarding the function of the visual system and are valuable in the diagnosis and investigation of optic nerve disease or post-retinal visual pathway dysfunction. The ISCEV VEP Standard specifies stimulus and recording conditions for three basic types of recording: (1) Pattern-reversal VEPs elicited by checkerboard stimuli with large 1° (degree) and small 0.25° check widths. (2) Pattern onset/offset VEPs elicited by checkerboard stimuli with larg

PURPOSE: To evaluate the findings of visual evoked potentials (VEP) in patients with dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON).
METHODS: In this observational, cross-sectional study 40 eyes (22 patients) with a diagnosis of DON were included.
RESULTS: We discovered that in 16 out of 37 eyes with pattern-VEP (p-VEP), the latency of P100 wave was normal in spite of having a diagnosis of DON. The same pattern was also observed in the measurement of the amplitude of P100 wave: in 28 out of 37 eyes with p-VEP the amplitudes were observed as normal. In 3 eyes of 3 patients p-VEP showed no response, theref

Headache is a common problem in childhood. Visual evoked potential (VEP) P100 latencies were recorded in children with headache. Sixty-four patients, aged 10.7 +/- 1.2 years, met the criteria of the International Headache Society for the diagnosis of migraine. Fifty-eight patients, aged 10.2 +/- 1.3 years, with tension headache and 56 healthy subjects, aged 10.3 +/- 1.3 years, as the control group were also studied. Patients with migraine had slightly longer P100 latencies than the other two groups. We conclude that VEP latency recording is a valuable test in the diagnosis of migraine, and can

PURPOSE: Hyperglycemia may rarely be seen with visual seizures. Observation of both visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in visual status epilepticus (SE) has not been reported. We describe acute and follow-up VEP and MRI findings of a patient with hyperglycemia-related visual SE of occipital origin.
METHODS: In a 59-year-old diabetic woman, complex visual hallucinations and illusions developed with < or =10 seizures per hour as an initial manifestation of nonketotic hyperglycemia.
RESULTS: Neurologic examination revealed ictal nystagmus to the right and conti

To study brain function in the neonatal period, disproportionately growth-retarded (n = 33) and appropriately grown (n = 21) infants were examined using Doppler flow velocities prenatally and visual evoked potentials postnatally. Visual evoked potentials recordings were made at gestation of 40 and 46 weeks. The group of growth-retarded infants had significantly prolonged latencies to both of the two major peaks (designated P and N), most pronounced for the P peak. This result was observed at both ages investigated and corresponds to a developmental delay of 3 weeks. For individuals, the increa

OBJECTIVE: To examine the efficacy of intracerebral recording of visual evoked potentials (VEPs) during posteroventral pallidotomy comparing macro- and microelectrode stimulation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The optic tract was identified by intracerebral recording of VEPs in 16 patients. Electrical stimulation through a lesioning electrode (macroelectrode stimulation: biphasic wave, 50 Hz, 0.2 ms, 0-6 V) and a microelectrode (microelectrode stimulation: impedance of 1 M(omega) at 300 Hz, biphasic pulse, 300 Hz, 0.2 ms, 10-50 microA) was delivered to assess visual responses.
RESULTS: VEPs were re

INTRODUCTION: Digital treatment of electrical signals coming from the central nervous system on stimulation of the optic nerve path offers an objective method for evaluation of visual evoked potentials (VEP) shown graphically on a cerebral map.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the topographical distribution of VEP in cases of optic neuropathy adding this parameter to the usual parameters of latency and amplitude.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 35 patients with suspected optic neuropathy and normal findings on basic ophthalmological examination, in whom VEP and VEP mapping (VEPM) was done.
RESULTS:

The effects of a standard 3 minutes' hyperventilation on the full-field pattern-reversal visual evoked potential (VEP) were studied in 33 normal subjects, 30 definite multiple sclerosis patients and in twenty-five patients with abnormal VEPs due to either tumourous compression of the anterior visual pathways or optic atrophy of other origin. Significantly greater reductions in P100 latency occurred in multiple sclerosis patients in comparison with controls (p less than 0.05). This change appeared to be specific for demyelinative type of lesion, for it was not found in cases with other types of

Retest reliability and objectivity (i.e. interrater agreement) are very important aspects of diagnostic tests. We report on studies concerning the retest reliability and objectivity (interrater agreement) of visual evoked potentials. The reliability and different facets of objectivity had been calculated. The confidence interval of single measurement can be identified, when the retest reliability is known. The confidence interval has to be taken into account for interpretation of measurement. The interrater agreement of measurement and interpretation of visual evoked potentials is high, but sp

Forty patients with MS initially tested in our laboratory were recalled for repeat PSVEP testing approximately two years later. Twelve normal controls were tested in a similar manner approximately two years apart. The PSVEP positive peak latency changed little in the 24 control eyes (mean 1.4 msec, range 0-6) over the study interval. Most MS patient eyes also showed little change in PSVEP latency over the two year study interval. Fifty-eight eyes changed 8 msec or less. Eighteen eyes showed a PSVEP latency increase of 10 msec or more. Six of these eighteen eyes were symptomatic (attack of clin

Experiments with VEP to checkerboard stimulation in 4 subjects with normal stereoscopic vision showed that binocular interaction was the same for fused images and for linear pattern displacement induced by horizontal and vertical prisms, as long as the patterns were projected on the macular areas of both eyes. Also in a stereo-blind subject the impaired binocular VEP interaction remained unchanged during linear displacement of the patterns. Thus the previously reported differences in binocular VEP interaction between stereo-normal stereoblind subjects cannot be explained by binocular stimulati

Visual evoked potential (VEP) latency to a sinusoidal grating pattern was measured in each eye of 103 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and compared with results in a control group of 56 patients hospitalized for other neurological conditions. Of the 50 patients classified as having definite MS, 90% showed prolonged latency (over 131 msec) in one or both eyes. In each eye of 24 of the MS patients, psychophysical measurement of the detectability of grating patterns was obtained. This test was abnormal in 11 of 13 patients with definite MS, 3 of 4 with probable MS, and 5 of 7 with possible M

Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) is characterized by necrosis of the cerebral white matter in the dorsolateral portions of the lateral ventricles. PVL causes motor, sensory, and cognitive deficits. The aim of this study was to analyze the conduction characteristics of the visual pathway in infants with diffuse PVL using visual evoked potentials (VEPs). We studied 11 healthy infants (mean age 3.3 ± 1.3 months) and 17 with diffuse PVL (mean age 2.9 ± 0.8 months and mean gestational age 31.9 ± 3.1 weeks). The N75, P100, and N135 wave latencies; the interwave N75-P100 and P100-N135 latencies; an
