Exercise for depression.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common and important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Depression is commonly treated with antidepressants and/or psychotherapy, but some people may prefer alternative approaches such as exercise. There are a number of theoretical reasons why exercise may improve depression. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of exercise in the treatment of depression. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched Medline, Embase, Sports Discus, PsycINFO, the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews for eligible studies in March 2007. I

Exercise and fatigue.

Physical exercise affects the equilibrium of the internal environment. During exercise the contracting muscles generate force or power and heat. So physical exercise is in fact a form of mechanical energy. This generated energy will deplete the energy stocks within the body. During exercise, metabolites and heat are generated, which affect the steady state of the internal environment. Depending on the form of exercise, sooner or later sensations of fatigue and exhaustion will occur. The physiological role of these sensations is protection of the exercising subject from the deleterious effects

Exercise and osteoarthritis.

Exercise remains an extremely popular leisure time activity in many countries throughout the western world. It is widely promoted in the lay press as having salutory benefits for weight control, disease management advantages for cardiovascular disease and diabetes, in addition to improving psychological well-being amongst an array of other benefits. In contrast, however, the lay press and community perception is also that exercise is potentially deleterious to one's joints. The purpose of this review is to consider what osteoarthritis (OA) is and provide an overview of the epidemiology of OA f

[Exercise induced rhabdomyolysis].

INTRODUCTION: Rhabdomyolysis is a potentially life-threatening disease, characterized by the release of intracellular calcium from skeletal muscles and can result in acute renal failure. CASE REPORT: A nineteen year old boy was admitted to the Clinic for Infective Diseases of Clinical Center Novi Sad. The disease was developing gradually and the symptoms were dizziness, muscle pain and dark color of urine. Due to the pathological level of aminotransferase he was hospitalized on the fourth day of the disease beginning with a suspicious diagnosis of acute viral hepatitis. In the hospital course

Exercise-induced asthma.

EIB is a common manifestation in diagnosed asthmatics and is a sensitive warning sign of worsening asthma. EIB may occur as an isolated entity in the absence of signs and symptoms of chronic asthma. Careful diagnosis is crucial in determining if this condition represents a preasthmatic state or simply a transient condition resulting from individual sensitivity to hyperventilation. The pathophysiology of EIB is hypothesized to result from rapid airway rewarming after hyperventilation. Effective treatment modalities include behavioral techniques and pharmacologic agents. Appropriate treatment re

[Asthma and exercise].

Exercise-induced asthma (EIA) is defined as the clinical occurrence of shortness of breath, cough or wheeze that occurs typically 5-15 minutes after the cessation of the exercise. In most patients with EIA, bronchoconstriction is followed by a refractory period, during which repeated exertion causes less bronchoconstriction. The occurrence of this type of asthma is influenced by the intensity and the duration of exercise. It is now generally believed that EIA affects all patients with asthma if challenged with exercise of sufficient intensity. The estimate prevalence varies from 7 to 15% in th

Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.

While mainstream therapies for androgenetic alopecia (AGA), including pharmacological treatments, mesotherapy, low-level light therapy, and hair transplantation, often fall short of clinical needs due to limited efficacy, side effects, or invasiveness, regenerative medicine based on stem cells shows promise yet faces challenges related to immunogenicity, standardization, and safety. Against this backdrop, extracellular vesicles (EVs)-nanoscale signaling vesicles enclosed by a lipid bilayer-have rapidly emerged as an innovative "cell-free" therapeutic paradigm. By delivering bioactive "cargo" s

Headaches and exercise.

Exercise-related headache is one of the most common medical problems affecting the modern-day athlete. Despite the high prevalence of headache in community populations, the epidemiology of sports-related headache is unclear. In certain collision sports, up to 50% of athletes report regular headaches as a consequence of their athletic participation. The classification of the different types of sport-related headache by the International Headache Society (IHS) and in previously published articles does not adequately encompass the clinical problem faced by team physicians. Confusion exists where

Exercise-induced asthma.

Exercise-induced asthma is the phenomenon of transient airflow obstruction, typically 5 to 15 minutes after physical exertion. The increased airway resistance produces a 15% or greater decrease in the forced expiratory volume in 1 second, or in peak expiratory flow rate. Exercise-induced asthma occurs in 90% of individuals with asthma, representing 12% to 15% of the population world-wide. The prevalence of exercise-induced asthma among athletes ranges between 3% and 11%. Several theories of the etiology exist: respiratory heat or water loss (or both), hyperventilation causing discharge of bron

Identifying Exercise Allergies.

In brief Exercise-related allergies vary brief from the benign rash of cholin-ergic urticaria to life-threatening exercise-induced anaphylaxis. Rapid diagnosis is essential, but it can be difficult to tell the two conditions apart. The size of the wheals and the patient history provide the best clues. Giving epinephrine and taking steps to protect the patient's airway, breathing, and circulation are standard treatment for exercise-induced anaphylaxis. Effective management for less severe cases involves exercising with a partner, keeping self-injectable epinephrine on hand, and avoiding exercis

Exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis.

The breakdown of skeletal muscle cells, rhabdomyolysis, is often caused by physical exercise. The exact mechanism of muscle injury is poorly understood. When injured, muscle cells release enzymes into the bloodstream, which can be detected on laboratory examination. In most cases, the amount of breakdown is minimal and patients suffer no ill effects from this condition. In severe cases, however, potentially life-threatening complications such as acute renal failure may develop. Risk factors, methods of diagnosis, treatment, and reconditioning are summarized.

Exercise-induced anaphylaxis.

Exercise-induced anaphylaxis (EIA) is a unique form of physical allergy that has been recognized with increasing frequency in recent years. The hallmarks of this syndrome are generalized pruritus with a flushing sensation, a feeling of warmth, and the development of urticaria in association with vigorous physical exertion. These symptoms tend to occur variably with exercise, but not with passive warming. Most patients report typical giant urticarial eruptions. Skin mast cells degranulate, and serum histamine increases during symptomatic attacks. Treatment is often problematic, but cessation of

Exercise and osteoporosis.

Bone formation and resorption are ongoing phenomena. When bone resorption equals bone formation, bone mass remains stable. When resorption exceeds formation, bone mass is reduced--a process that leads to osteopenia or osteoporosis. Osteopenia is reduced bone mass and osteoporosis is reduced bone mass with resultant fractures. Reduced bone mass may be postmenopausal or related to ovarian failure (type I osteoporosis), it may be age-related (type II osteoporosis), or it may result from several other etiologic factors (secondary osteoporosis). Disuse and inactivity can cause bone loss, whereas we

Exercise induced esotropia.

A case of unusual intermittent esotropia and diplopia is reported. A 13-year-old boy experienced diplopia during vigorous exercise that resolved within 30 minutes after stopping the exercise. The symptoms had been present unchanged since age 6. Examination revealed orthophoria. After vigorous exercise an esotropia of 14 prism diopters in the distance developed, which gradually resolved over 30 minutes. Neurologic evaluation, CT scan, and magnetic resonance imaging scan have been normal. The symptoms have continued unchanged for 11 years. To my knowledge, no other similar case of exercise induc

Exercise stress testing.

Exercise stress testing is used widely to evaluate the presence and extent of anatomic disease and the prognosis when significant disease has been defined. Indications for diagnostic testing include elevated blood pressure, palpitations, and chest pain. Functional testing is used to assess progression of cardiac disease, cardiac status following therapy, and physical capacity. Exercise testing must be applied to an appropriately selected group of patients. The indications, contraindications, types, results, and complications of exercise testing are presented.

Cramps following exercise.

A 13-year old boy presented with a 10-year history of severe muscle cramps experienced an hour after prolonged exercise. There was no history of exercise intolerance or myoglobinuria. A muscle biopsy showed a lipid myopathy and a deficiency of muscle carnitine palmityl transferase. He has responded to a high carbohydrate, low fat diet with added carbohydrate intake preceding extensive exercise. Diagnosis of this entity before an episode of rhabdomyolysis is unusual.
