Motion analysis systems are widely employed to identify movement deficiencies-e.g. patterns that potentially increase the risk of injury or inhibit performance. However, findings across studies are often conflicting in respect to what a movement deficiency is or the magnitude of association to a specific injury. This study tests the information content within movement data using a data driven framework that was taught to classify movement data into the classes: NORM, ACLOP and ACLNO OP, without the input of expert knowledge. The NORM class was presented by 62 subjects (124 NORM limbs), while 1

Whole-body vibration training, i.e., standing in different static positions or exercising on a vibrating platform, has been promoted as an attractive and efficient complement, or even alternative, to resistance training. No ocular side effects have been described until now. We describe the case of a 43-year-old man who presented 2 weeks after starting whole-body vibration training with a spontaneous vitreous hemorrhage. We briefly discuss the ocular effects of habitual exposure to vibration described in the literature. This case suggests that whole body vibration training can cause spontaneous

A main reason for failure when manipulating a mandible in disk displacement without reduction is a lack of coordination, because of a sudden resistance on the patient's part when fingers are placed in his mouth. This work describes a new extraoral manipulation technique that avoids this problem. Basically, this technique involves three stages. In stage one, the patient performs rhythmic left and right sideways movements unassisted; in stage two, gentle finger pressure is applied by the clinician on the external aspect of the mandible in the same direction as the patient's movements; and in sta

To characterise timing of movements and evaluate performance effects of technique alterations in V2 ski skating, 13 elite male cross-country skiers (age, 23 ± 2 years; stature, 182 ± 6 cm; body mass, 76 ± 8 kg; V2 V̇O2max, 79.3 ± 4.4 mL · kg-1 · min-1) were tested four times during the preparation and competition phase on a roller ski treadmill. Each test consisted of submaximal intensities of exercise for determination of oxygen cost followed by one 1000-m performance test. Hip movement (from accelerometer data) and joint angles (2D video) were determined for high-intensity exercise (6° and 3

UNLABELLED: Introduction (including aim): Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a chronic inflammatory and rheumatic disease that causes inflammation and structural changes to the skeleton. Patients with axSpA suffer from neck pain and stiffness and have severe and permanent restrictions in movement. Patients are advised to carry out prescribed exercises to maintain mobility, but most do not comply with this advice due to the unnatural nature of head and neck stretching exercises. Clinicians currently only test cervical rotation of patients with axSpA a few times per year. Pain and stiffness can

Low back pain is an illness with various economic and social repercussions since it is one on the most causes of work absence worldwide. When the patient feels pain in the back, there is an uncertainty regarding a possible risk or cause for low back pain; however, diagnosis is not easy, and around 90 % of the cases do not present physical evidence, therefore, the problem is classified as a non-specific low back pain. Treatment includes body movement, because rest weakens the back muscles and causes atrophy; the recommended exercise methods include exercises for the trunk and abdomen muscles ma

PURPOSE: Despite the increasing body of literature on badminton, no data exist concerning the energy cost of badminton movement, known as "footwork." This study introduces a novel experimental approach to assessing the energy cost of footwork by applying established metabolic measurement techniques to badminton-specific movement patterns for the first time. In addition, it aims to verify whether differences exist between 2 different movement combinations.
METHODS: Seven male and 7 female badminton athletes (age 19 [4] y; body mass 64.9 [8.4] kg; height 1.72 [0.08] m; V˙O2peak 55.5 [10.3] mL·k

Sport, fitness, as well as rehabilitation activities, often require the accomplishment of repetitive movements. The correctness of the exercises is often related to the capability of maintaining the required cadence and muscular force. Failure to maintain the required force, also known as muscle fatigue, is accompanied by a shift in the spectral content of the surface electromyography (EMG) signal toward lower frequencies. This paper presents a novel approach for simultaneously obtaining exercise repetition frequency and evaluating muscular fatigue, as functions of time, by only using the EMG

INTRODUCTION: Vaqas and Ryan (2003) advocated yoga and breathing exercises for lymphedema. Narahari et al. (2007) developed an integrative medicine protocol for lower-limb lymphedema using yoga. Studies have hypothesized that yoga plays a similar role as that of central manual lymph drainage of Foldi's technique. This study explains how we have used yoga and breathing as a self-care intervention for breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL).
METHODS: The study outcome was to create a yoga protocol for BCRL. Selection of yoga was based on the actions of muscles on joints, anatomical areas associ

PURPOSE: Exercise (planned, structured, repetitive movement) improves pain and function in people with persistent musculoskeletal pain (PMSK), but adherence is often poor. This systematic review evaluates the evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the effectiveness of interventions to improve exercise adherence in people with PMSK and describes the content, context, and theoretical underpinning of behaviour change interventions designed to increase adherence.
METHODS: Nine electronic databases were searched from inception dates to August 2017. Studies were included if they were

Purpose: Iliac vein stenting is the primary treatment for patients with iliac vein compression syndrome (IVCS). However, post-stent placement, patients often experience in-stent restenosis and thrombosis. Despite this, the role of lower limb movements in the functioning of stents and veins in IVCS patients remains unclear. This study aimed to address this knowledge gap by developing a computational model using medical imaging techniques to simulate IVCS after stent placement. Methods: This research used a patient-specific model to analyze the effects of lower extremity exercises on hemodynamic

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Training and rehabilitation techniques which improve core muscle strength are beneficial for improvement of dynamic stability of the equine vertebral column. The Equiband™ system, consisting of resistance bands attached to a customised saddle pad, is suggested to provide constant proprioceptive feedback during motion to encourage recruitment of abdominal and hindquarter musculature.
OBJECTIVES: To quantify the effect of the Equiband™ system on back kinematics and movement symmetry.
STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal intervention study.
METHODS: Quantitative analysis of

The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a 24-week exercise protocol carried out in geothermal spring water to improve overall physical function and muscle mass in a group of healthy elderly subjects. A further aim was to compare this water-based protocol with a land-based protocol and a control group. For this purpose, 59 subjects were recruited and randomly allocated to three groups: aquatic group (AG), land group (LG), and control group (CG). AG and LG followed a 6-month, twice-weekly, multimodality exercise intervention. AG underwent the protocol in hot-spring water (36°C)
