Socioeconomic factors predict successful supervised exercise therapy completion.

OBJECTIVE: Supervised exercise therapy (SET) for patients with intermittent claudication (IC) can lower the risk of progression to chronic limb-threatening ischemia and amputation, while preserving and restoring functional status. Despite supporting evidence, it remains underutilized, and among those who initiate programs, attrition rates are extremely high. We hypothesize that socioeconomic factors may represent significant barriers to SET completion. METHODS: Patients with IC referred to SET at a multi-hospital, single-institution health care system (2018-2022) from a prospectively maintain

Baduanjin exercise: A potential promising therapy toward osteoporosis.

PURPOSE: Baduanjin (BDJ) exercise is a traditional exercise that combines breathing, body movement, meditation and awareness to help delay the onset and progression of senile degenerative musculoskeletal diseases, such as osteoporosis (OP). The aim of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the efficacy of BDJ exercise, and preliminarily infer its effective mechanism in the treatment of OP. METHODS: We identified relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) through eight databases, and compared BDJ exercise with the control groups (including blank control and conventional treatment intervention). Effects of exercise therapy on painful temporomandibular disorders.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are common chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions among orofacial pain. Painful TMD condition such as myalgia and arthralgia can be managed by exercise therapy. However, as it is hard to access actual effect of each modality that is included in an exercise therapy programme due to multiple choice of the management modality, their efficacy remains controversial. Therefore, this review focused on the effects of exercise therapy for the management of painful TMD. The aims of this review were to summarise the effects of exercise therapy for major symptoms of pain

[Cardiac reserve in Parkinson's disease and exercise therapy].

The clinical feature of Parkinson's disease (PD) is not based on the identification of the extrapyramidal symptom such as bradykinesia, restinbg tremor, rigidity, but also other non-motor symptom (REM sleep disorder, autonomic dysfunction, hyposmia etc). According to the cardio-sympathetic dysfunction, it is well known abnormal MIBG and orthostatic hypotension finding was seen in early disease stage. Furthermore denervation supersensitivity using β1 stimulant correlates the severity of MIBG image, so that this abnormal cardiac function induces inadequate cardiac capacity for exercise. Inadequa

Choices of therapy for exercise-induced asthma in children.

Cough and wheezing interferes with sport and other forms of physical activity in half of asthmatic children. Airway obstruction can be induced by a standard exercise test in over 70% of children with asthma. A beta-adrenergic agonist or cromone taken by inhalation beforehand will usually inhibit bronchoconstriction provoked by a free running exercise test. The duration of protective effect with salbutamol, terbutaline and cromones is less than 4 h. The long acting beta-adrenergic agonists formoterol and salmeterol give protection against exercise-induced airway obstruction for up to 12 h, whic

Diuretic therapy and exercise in patients with systemic hypertension.

Twenty patients with uncomplicated systemic hypertension underwent treadmill testing twice during placebo treatment and twice during hydrochlorothiazide treatment. Data were collected at rest, at peak exercise and 10 min after exercise. Serum potassium, magnesium and plasma catecholamines increased significantly with exercise. There was no rebound hypokalaemia during the recovery period. Occasional ventricular premature complexes were recorded in all phases of the study. However, there was no difference in the frequency or complexity of arrhythmias between the placebo and the treatment periods

The Impact and Molecular Mechanisms of Exercise in Cancer Therapy.

Cancer is a major global health issue, and exercise has become a key supportive treatment. It contributes to reducing cancer risk, enhancing prognosis, and aiding recovery, especially for survivors. However, the exact mechanisms, such as how exercise reduces cancer risk or enhances treatment, are still unclear. Current research often focuses on specific cancer types, ignoring the diverse needs of patients. This limits the development of personalized exercise plans. Additionally, there is insufficient comparison of exercise types-like aerobic, resistance, and high-intensity interval training-re

Exercise as a therapy for cancer-induced muscle wasting.

Cancer cachexia is a progressive disorder characterized by body weight, fat, and muscle loss. Cachexia induces metabolic disruptions that can be analogous and distinct from those observed in cancer, obscuring both diagnosis and treatment options. Inflammation, hypogonadism, and physical inactivity are widely investigated as systemic mediators of cancer-induced muscle wasting. At the cellular level, dysregulation of protein turnover and energy metabolism can negatively impact muscle mass and function. Exercise is well known for its anti-inflammatory effects and potent stimulation of anabolic si

Understanding the Role of Exercise in Cancer Cachexia Therapy.

Cachexia, the unintentional loss of body weight, is prevalent in many cancer types, and the associated skeletal muscle mass depletion increases patient morbidity and mortality. While anorexia can be present, cachexia is not reversible with nutritional therapies alone. Pharmacological agents have been proposed to treat this condition, but there are currently no approved treatments. Nonetheless, the hallmark characteristics associated with cancer cachexia remain viable foundations for future therapies. Regular physical activity holds a promising future as a nonpharmacological alternative to impr

Aspects of forced exercise and the therapy thereof in sheep.

Sixteen Merino sheep were subjected to forced exercise after which half were treated with sodium bicarbonate, vitamin B complex, antibiotics and a glucocorticoid. Cardiac rate, rectal temperature and blood were taken from all the animals before, immediately after and again two and five hours after exercise. Exercise resulted in increased cardiac cardiac rate, rectal temperature, plasma levels of glucose, lactate, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase, potassium, and decreased levels of blood pH, buffer base, bicarbonate, base excess and CO2. Compared with the controls, the therapy increased p

[Voice exercise therapy versus electrostimulation therapy in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis].

BACKGROUND: Several behavioural voice treatment procedures have been suggested for unilateral vocal fold paresis. However, data regarding their effectiveness and efficiency are sparse. Here we compare the outcome of traditional voice treatment versus electrostimulation voice exercise. METHODS: A total of 24 patients participated voluntarily in a prospective randomised trial. Vocal fold irregularity and maximum phonation time were used as dependent variables. RESULTS: Statistical analysis indicated slight though not significant differences favouring electrostimulation supported vocal exercise

Ageing, clinical complexity, and exercise therapy: a multidimensional approach.

Ageing is a multidimensional concept related to the progressive decline in physiological functions. The decrease of physical autonomy due to the ageing process leads to frailty, which in turn is associated with disability and comorbidity. Ageing represents the primary risk factor for chronic degenerative diseases, especially involving cardiovascular, metabolic, respiratory, and osteoarticular systems, determining the decrease in activities and quality of daily life. Regular physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of chronic degenerative diseases, moderate or severe functional limit

Prehabilitation exercise therapy before elective abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

BACKGROUND: An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is an abnormal dilation in the diameter of the abdominal aorta of 50% or more of the normal diameter or greater than 3 cm in total. The risk of rupture increases with the diameter of the aneurysm, particularly above a diameter of approximately 5.5 cm. Perioperative and postoperative morbidity is common following elective repair in people with AAA. Prehabilitation or preoperative exercise is the process of enhancing an individual's functional capacity before surgery to improve postoperative outcomes. Studies have evaluated exercise interventions fo

Perioperative Exercise Therapy in Bariatric Surgery: Improving Patient Outcomes.

Nowadays, obesity and related comorbidities like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia and obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome are considered one of the medical challenges of the 21st century. Even with the rise of bariatric and metabolic surgery, obesity and metabolic syndrome are reaching endemic proportions. Even in 2020, obesity is still a growing problem. There is increasing evidence that next to bariatric surgery, exercise interventions in the perioperative period could give extra beneficial effects. In this regard, effects on anthropometrics, cardiovascular risk factors and physic
