Neuromuscular and behavioural evidence of motor control adaptations following 8 weeks of virtual reality exergaming.

PURPOSE: Virtual reality (VR) exergaming was shown to enhance cognitive performance, yet its effects on neuromuscular function remain unclear. This study investigated whether chronic VR exergaming induces adaptations in neuromuscular coordination and speed-accuracy regulation. METHOD: Twenty-eight healthy young adults (22.8 ± 1.2 years; 9 women) completed an 8-week training programme (two 30-min sessions/week) consisting of either immersive VR exergaming (VR game with rapid and targeted, goal-directed upper-limb movements) or non-immersive video-guided coordination training with Arnis Stick (

Beyond technology: How XR quality features shape user experience and physical activity determinants in exergaming.

Promoting physical activity (PA) in healthcare is essential, yet inactivity remains widespread. Exergames (EGs) offer a playful strategy to foster PA. Implementation technologies range from screen-based consoles to Extended Reality (XR) devices. Because XR environments differ in experiential quality features (e.g., immersivity, interactivity, coherence), they may affect individual-level PA determinants (physical, psychological, biological). This mini-review examines if different XR environments influence the user experience and individual-level PA determinants in EGs, highlighting areas for fu

AI-driven low-cost rehabilitation exergame as a lightweight framework for stroke assessment.

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability, often affecting upper-limb motor function and requiring continuous assessment. The Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), though a clinical gold standard, is time-consuming and demands specialized personnel. This study presents an AI-driven, low-cost rehabilitation exergame that simultaneously provides therapy and automatically estimates upper-limb motor performance during gameplay using only a standard camera. Sixteen kinematic and spatiotemporal features were extracted from 2D hand and arm trajectories of twelve post-stroke individuals (24 limbs, 14 a

Theoretical Rationale for Design of Tasks in a Virtual Reality-Based Exergame for Rehabilitation Purposes.

Virtual reality games are playing a greater role in rehabilitation settings. Previously, commercial games have dominated, but increasingly, bespoke games for specific rehabilitation contexts are emerging. Choice and design of tasks for VR-games are still not always clear, however; some games are designed to motivate and engage players, not necessarily with the facilitation of specific movements as a goal. Other games are designed specifically for the facilitation of specific movements. A theoretical background for the choice of tasks seems warranted. As an example, we use a game that was desig

The Effects of Exergames on Fundamental Movement Skills in Childhood: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity is a public health crisis that is influenced by practical barriers in childhood. We define a category of interventions that can reduce barriers, with exergames being one example. There is mixed evidence on fundamental movement skills effects, due to variability in experimental outcomes, that may be limiting usage. This meta-analysis identifies the source of that variability to determine the effect of exergames on fundamental movement skills. METHODS: To provide a comprehensive evidence base, we systematically surveyed 10 research databases / search engines (Pub

Beyond "just" fun: The role of exergames in advancing health promotion and disease prevention.

Applying innovations in digital health technologies, such as exergames, has been recommended by official bodies like the World Health Organization for health promotion and disease prevention across various populations and age groups. Given a key advantage of interactive and gamified digital health technologies is promoting user engagement, a substantial proportion of studies have implemented recreational exergames - games primarily designed to make specific activities more fun and entertaining. In this article, we aim to move beyond the benefits of "just" providing a more engaging environment
