Diagnosis and therapy of anogenital lichen planus.

Genital lichen planus is a fairly common disease of genital skin that exhibits a widely variable morphology. Lichen planus occurring on the mucosal surfaces is chronic, and most often erosive and painful, frequently producing debilitating scarring. Mild, non-erosive disease is controllable with topical corticosteroids. Although erosive disease is much more difficult to manage, the use of topical corticosteroids, sometimes in combination with other topical or systemic medications, maximizes comfort and preserves function, especially with careful attention to local care and secondary infection.

Finasteride Topical Delivery Systems for Androgenetic Alopecia.

Androgenetic alopecia, generally recognized as male pattern baldness, is a gradually developing medical and physiological change, which is manifested by continuous hair-loss from scalp. Finasteride (4-aza-3-oxosteroid) is a potent anti-baldness compound that selectively and competitively inhibits the 5α-reductase isoenzymes. Prolonged oral use of finasteride leads to the emergence of sexual disorders including decrease in libido, gynecomastia, erectile dysfunction, ejaculation disorder, orgasm disorders and mood disturbances. Since, hair follicles widely home in 5α-reductase, topical formulati

Study results of benzoyl peroxide 5%/clindamycin 1% topical gel, adapalene 0.1% gel, and use in combination for acne vulgaris.

Combination therapy is the standard of care in the management of acne vulgaris. It is essential to treat as many aspects of acne pathogenesis as possible. Due to increasing insensitivity of Propionibacterium acnes to antibiotics, the concomitant use of other topical agents that exhibit other modes of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity is integral to the successful treatment of acne. The combination of topical benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin gel has been shown to be more effective than either agent alone. The addition of a topical retinoid may further enhance therapeutic results. Thi

How politics affect pandemic forecasting: spatio-temporal early warning capabilities of different geo-social media topics in the context of state-level political leaning.

OBJECTIVES: Due to political polarization, adherence to public health measures varied across US states during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although social media posts have been shown effective in anticipating COVID-19 surges, the impact of political leaning on the effectiveness of different topics for early warning remains mostly unexplored. Our study examines the spatio-temporal early warning potential of different geo-social media topics across republican, democrat, and swing states. METHODS: Using keyword filtering, we identified eight COVID-19-related geo-social media topics. We then utilized C

Novel antipsoriatic fluidized spanlastic nanovesicles: In vitro physicochemical characterization, ex vivo cutaneous retention and exploratory clinical therapeutic efficacy.

Tazarotene (TAZ) is a topical synthetic retinoid used in psoriasis treatment, however, it is extremely lipophilic and exhibits skin irritation. Research is in a state of continuous advancement in the field of nanocarriers fabrication, and in this regard, we investigated the formulation of novel topically oriented nanovesicles; representing a combination of spanlastics and penetration enhancer vesicles, to be termed (fluidized-SNs). TAZ-loaded fluidized SNs were physicochemically characterized, tested for ex vivo cutaneous retention, and the selected formulation was compared with the marketed p

Hyaluronic acid-based reduction responsive nanoparticles for Improved anti-psoriasis effects of traditional Chinese herb monomer oleanolic acid via blocking YAP-AREG axis.

BACKGROUND: Oleanolic acid (OA), a pentacyclic triterpenoid abundantly present in various traditional Chinese herbs, exhibits promising anti-psoriatic potential owing to its broad pharmacological activities. Nevertheless, its clinical translation has been hindered by challenges including poor aqueous solubility, limited cutaneous permeation, and rapid systemic clearance, all of which compromise bioavailability when administered topically. To address these limitations, we designed and developed encapsulated and disulfide bonded OA-hyaluronic acid nanoprodrugs (OA-NPs@OA) for topical treatment o

Should Art About Child Abuse Be Exhibited in Corridors of Health Professional Schools?

Imagine an exhibition-on a topic like child sexual abuse, dementia, or epilepsy, for example-not typically considered by museums or galleries. The question, then, is Where might such an exhibit be displayed? How about a medical school, for instance? An exhibition of this kind might include visceral psychological portraits and explanatory text tailored to the learning activities of medical students. This article examines these curatorial and ethical considerations.

In vitro activity of rifaximin, a topical rifamycin derivative, against Chlamydia trachomatis.

Rifaximin is a rifamycin derivative that possesses in vitro activity against a wide range of bacteria. Its antimicrobial spectrum plus poor intestinal absorption have led to consideration of this compound as a topical agent. We evaluated its in vitro activity against clinical and laboratory strains of Chlamydia trachomatis and found that rifaximin exhibits minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) at concentrations that would be greatly exceeded in a topical preparation.

Novel drug delivery systems: potential in improving topical delivery of antiacne agents.

Acne is the most common cutaneous disorder of multifactorial origin with a prevalence of 70-85% in adolescents. The majority of the acne sufferers exhibit mild to moderate acne initially, which progresses to the severe form in certain cases. Topical therapy is employed as first-line treatment in mild acne, whereas for moderate and severe acne, systemic therapy is required in addition to topical therapy. Currently, several topical agents are available that affect at least one of the main pathogenetic factors responsible for the development of acne. Although topical therapy has an important posi

A Sensitization-Free Dimethyl Fumarate Prodrug, Isosorbide Di-(Methyl Fumarate), Provides a Topical Treatment Candidate for Psoriasis.

Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is an effective oral treatment for psoriasis administered in Europe for nearly 60 years. However, its potential has been limited by contact dermatitis that prohibits topical application. This paper characterizes a DMF derivative, isosorbide DMF (IDMF), which was designed to have antipsoriatic effects without skin-sensitizing properties. We show that IDMF exhibits neither genotoxicity nor radiation sensitivity in skin fibroblasts and is nonirritating and nonsensitizing in animal models (rat, rabbit, guinea pig). Microarray analysis of cytokine-stimulated keratinocytes sh

Multiple corticosteroid orally elicited allergic contact dermatitis in a patient with multiple topical corticosteroid allergic contact dermatitis.

Corticoid allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) may be topically or systemically elicited. Allergic contact dermatitis to topical corticosteroids is relatively common, whereas reports of orally elicited ACD to corticosteroids are rarer. Patients allergic to one corticosteroid often exhibit cross-reactivity to other corticoids. We have previously reported a 46-year-old woman with contact allergy documented by patch and provocative use testing to multiple topical corticosteroids. On further testing, she was thought to have multiple corticoid orally elicited ACD to triamcinolone, methyl prednisolone,
