Root vertical spatial stress drives targeted enrichment of rhizospheric aerobic denitrifying microorganisms for enhanced nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands.

Aerobic denitrification (AD) can overcome the limitations of traditional denitrification in constructed wetlands (CWs) caused by heterogeneous dissolved oxygen distribution and carbon source scarcity, yet effectively enriching functional aerobic denitrifying microorganisms (ADMs) to enhance nitrogen removal efficiency remains a challenge. In this study, the microbial community structure and nitrogen removal pathway were regulated in small-scale CWs by root vertical spatial stress and different plants species. Reducing substrate depth from 60 cm to 10 cm significantly increased the average root

Molecular diversity and multifarious plant growth promoting attributes of Bacilli associated with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) rhizosphere from six diverse agro-ecological zones of India.

The diversity of culturable Bacilli was investigated in six wheat cultivating agro-ecological zones of India viz: northern hills, north western plains, north eastern plains, central, peninsular, and southern hills. These agro-ecological regions are based on the climatic conditions such as pH, salinity, drought, and temperature. A total of 395 Bacilli were isolated by heat enrichment and different growth media. Amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis using three restriction enzymes AluI, MspI, and HaeIII led to the clustering of these isolates into 19-27 clusters in the different zones at

Seasonal variation in structural and functional distribution of periphyton in a macrolide antibiotics-contaminated river.

Periphyton, a microbial assemblage of autotrophic and heterotrophic organisms, is vital to aquatic ecosystems. While exposure to macrolide antibiotics has been confirmed to reduce the biodiversity and damage the critical ecological functions in indoor microcosm bioassays, the distribution of periphyton along a macrolide antibiotic pollution gradient in a river has yet to be determined. Herein, we established the spatiotemporal distribution of five major macrolides, i.e., azithromycin (AZI), roxithromycin (ROX), erythromycin (ERY), clarithromycin (CLA), and anhydro erythromycin (ERY-H2O) in wat

Enhancing the phytoextraction capacity of chromium-contaminated soil by co-addition of garbage enzymes and microelectrolytic iron-carbon fillers.

Most improved strategies for phytoextraction do not achieve a synergistic enhancement of chromium (Cr) accumulation capacity and biomass. This study investigated the impacts of co-addition of garbage enzyme (GE) and microelectrolytic iron-carbon filler (MF) on soil physicochemical properties, as well as form and uptake of Cr during aging and phytoextraction process. The response of rhizosphere microbial community to co-addition and its role in enhancing the remediation performance of ryegrass was further analyzed. Co-addition of GE and MF during the 12-day aging process resulted in an increase

Harnessing the seaweed holobiont: antibacterial and antioxidant lead compounds from epiphytic microbiota.

Seaweed-associated epiphytic bacteria represent a promising source of bioactive metabolites with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. In this study, 26 culturable epiphytic bacterial isolates were obtained from five marine macroalgae, namely Ulva lactuca, Amphiroa anceps, Halimeda opuntia, Kappaphycus alvarezii, and Sargassum wightii. Preliminary screening using the agar overlay method revealed that six isolates (EB-30, EB-38, EB-42, EB-47, EB-48, and EB-50) exhibited antibacterial activity against at least two pathogenic test strains, accounting for 23% of the total isolates. Altered Duodenal Mucosa-Associated Microbiota and Immune Profiles in Functional Dyspepsia: A Study of Host-Microbiome Homeostasis.

BACKGROUND: Recent work suggests an altered duodenal mucosa-associated microbiota (d-MAM) in patients with functional dyspepsia (FD) when compared to controls. This may reflect alterations in host-microbiome homeostasis. Given the specific mucosal immune signatures identified in FD, we hypothesize that these signatures are associated with specific microbial changes. We aim to profile the d-MAM to identify microbes associated with known changes in FD mucosal and peripheral immunity. METHODS: Upper gastrointestinal biopsies were collected from 11 outpatient controls and 17 FD patients. Specific

Alginate Beads Encapsulated Auxin-Producing PGPR as a Biofertilizer Promotes Triticum aestivum Growth.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can be utilized to enhance plant growth and production. The use of efficient PGPR is one of the effective ways to improve Triticum aestivum (wheat) growth and nutrition. The exploration of native rhizobacterial strains as biofertilizers with suitable carriers in immobilized form is an alternative way to prevent soil ecosystem pollution. In order to evaluate the potential of biofertilizers and multiple plant growth-promoting attributes, numerous experiments were conducted on isolated strains. The impact of auxin-producing rhizobacterial strains (APRS)

A Green Microbial Fuel Cell-Based Biosensor for In Situ Chromium (VI) Measurement in Electroplating Wastewater.

The extensive use of Cr(VI) in many industries and the disposal of Cr(VI)-containing wastes have resulted in Cr(VI)-induced environmental contamination. Cr(VI) compounds are associated with increased cancer risks; hence, the detection of toxic Cr(VI) compounds is crucial. Various methods have been developed for Cr(VI) measurement, but they are often conducted offsite and cannot provide real-time toxicity monitoring. A microbial fuel cell (MFC) is an eco-friendly and self-sustaining device that has great potential as a biosensor for in situ Cr(VI) measurement, especially for wastewater generate

Taxonomic and Functional Distribution of Bacterial Communities in Domestic and Hospital Wastewater System: Implications for Public and Environmental Health.

The discharge of untreated hospital and domestic wastewater into receiving water bodies is still a prevalent practice in developing countries. Unfortunately, because of an ever-increasing population of people who are perennially under medication, these wastewaters contain residues of antibiotics and other antimicrobials as well as microbial shedding, the direct and indirect effects of which include the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes and an increase in the evolution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that pose a threat to public and environmental health. This study assessed the taxo

Screening and Identification of Diesel Biodegrading Bacteria Isolated From Petroleum Hydrocarbon Contaminated Garage Soils of Kericho County, Kenya.

Despite the benefits of petroleum hydrocarbon as essential raw energy sources in many industries, they cause major global environmental pollution. Petroleum hydrocarbons pollutants are highly toxic and recalcitrant, making them dangerous and persistent over long periods in an ecosystem. However, oil contaminated soil is enriched with microorganisms that can utilize petroleum products and hydrocarbons for their growth, nutrition, and metabolic activities. This study aimed to isolate and characterize hydrocarbons-degrading bacteria capable of degrading hydrocarbons in soil samples obtained from

Reclaimed wastewater reuse in irrigation: Role of biofilms in the fate of antibiotics and spread of antimicrobial resistance.

Reclaimed wastewater associated biofilms are made up from diverse class of microbial communities that are continuously exposed to antibiotic residues. The presence of antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB) and their associated antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) ensures also a continuous selection pressure on biofilms that could be seen as hotspots for antibiotic resistance dissemination but can also play a role in antibiotic degradation. In this study, the antibiotic degradation and the abundance of four ARGs (qnrS, sul1, blaTEM, ermB), and two mobile genetic elements (MGEs) including IS613 and

Fluorescence-based screening for engineered aldo-keto reductase KmAKR with improved catalytic performance and extended substrate scope.

BACKGROUND: Aldo-keto reductases-catalyzed transformations of ketones to chiral alcohols have become an established biocatalytic process step in the pharmaceutical industry. Previously, we have discovered an aldo-keto reductase (AKR) from Kluyveromyces marxianus that is active to the aliphatic tert-butyl 6-substituted (5R/S)-hydroxy-3-oxohexanoates, but it is inactive to aromatic ketones. In order to acquire an excellent KmAKRmutant for ensuring the simultaneous improvement of activity-thermostability toward tert-butyl 6-cyano-(5R)-hydroxy-3-oxohexanoate ((5R)-1) and broadening the universal a

Identification of polybacterial communities in patients with postoperative, posttraumatic, and endogenous endophthalmitis through 16S rRNA gene libraries.

Endophthalmitis is a potential vision-threatening complication following surgical procedures (postoperative endophthalmitis [POE]), trauma (posttraumatic endophthalmitis [PTE]), and bacteremic seeding of the eye from a distant infection site (endogenous endophthalmitis [EE]). Several studies have revealed the polybacterial characteristics of endophthalmitis, which make the administration of antibiotics to treat the disease challenging. However, until now, the polybacterial communities of POE, PTE, and EE have not been precisely studied. Hence, the present study was designed to identify the bac

A Novel Discovery of Microorganisms Associated with Certain Seaweed Species from the Cat Ba Archipelago Area, Vietnam: Isolation, Identification and Exploration of Their Antimicrobial Activities.

Marine macroalgae, or seaweed, are an attractive source of novel natural products, which are in many cases not only produced by the algae themselves but also by their associated microorganisms. Therefore, the search for novel products should not only be aimed at the algae but also their symbionts. In this study, we attempted to investigate culturable microorganisms associated with nine marine macroalgal hosts collected from the Cat Ba Archipelago area (Vietnam), which is known to have significant biodiversity value. More specifically, such microorganisms were isolated by using standard plating
