Arthroscopic Excision of Scapular Exostoses: A Technical Note.

Background: Cartilaginous exostoses of the scapula are rare and can cause symptoms such as pain and mechanical crepitus due to scapulothoracic bursitis. While open surgical resection remains the standard approach, it is associated with significant tissue disruption and longer rehabilitation. This technical note presents a minimally invasive arthroscopic technique for excising scapular exostoses. Methods: We report the case of a 22-year-old female patient with a symptomatic ventral scapular exostosis. After confirmation of a benign lesion, the exostosis was excised en bloc under continuous arth

An analysis of osteoporosis in patients with hereditary multiple exostoses.

UNLABELLED: We analyzed osteoporosis in 20 HME patients. According to the T-score of BMD, 30% and 67.5% of the patients fell in the range of osteopenia in the lumbar spine and femoral neck. Our results indicate HME patients have low bone mass. They do not have abnormal bone metabolism. INTRODUCTION: There are few reports of osteoporosis in hereditary multiple exostoses (HME) patients. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze osteoporosis in HME patients. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 20 patients diagnosed with HME. Patients underwent bone mineral density (BMD)

Lifetime prevalence of exostoses in New Zealand surfers.

INTRODUCTION External auditory exostosis (EAE) is a benign, irreversible bony outgrowth that arises from the temporal bone. EAE projects into the external ear canal, potentially causing recurrent otitis externa and conductive hearing loss. AIM To determine lifetime prevalence of EAE in New Zealand (NZ) surfers. METHODS This study used an online national survey. RESULTS Respondents were 1376 NZ surfers (recreational = 868, competitive = 508). Mean surfing experience was 16.2 years. Most self-classified as advanced surfers (36.5%), followed by intermediate (30.2%), expert (20.1%) and beginner (1

Multiple hereditary exostoses: A pseudoaneurysm masquerading as tumor.

Multiple hereditary exostoses is an autosomal dominant condition characterized by numerous benign osteochondromas. Complications are rare and can include deformity, growth abnormality, fracture, adventitial bursa formation, local mass effect on a nerve, malignant degeneration, and vascular complications including stenosis, occlusion, arteriovenous fistula, and pseudoaneurysm. We present a case of multiple hereditary exostoses leading to a deep femoral artery pseudoaneurysm in the proximal medial thigh with subsequent rupture and hematoma, masquerading as tumor.

Giant costal osteochondroma in a man with multiple exostoses.

We report the case of a 42-year-old man who presented with kyphosis resulting from a giant symptomatic costal osteochondroma around the left fourth rib. The osteochondroma on the left side of the back was 56 cm × 47 cm × 33 cm and was painful. The size and growth of the tumor suggested a malignant transformation of a large costal osteochondroma. Multiple osteochondromas were also found on the legs. The patient's family history revealed hereditary characteristics. This patient was clinically diagnosed as a case of multiple familial osteochondromatosis. Complete removal of the tumor relieved the

Exostoses of the external auditory canal in Oregon surfers.

PURPOSE: The objectives of this study were to determine the cold water exposure necessary to produce exostoses of the external auditory canal in individuals who predominantly surf along the Oregon and/or the northern California coastline and to ascertain from surfers' otologic histories symptoms attributable to exostoses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Free ear examinations were provided at two surf shops in northern Oregon. The ear canals were examined with an otoscope, and each surfer was given a summary score indicating the percentage of both canals that was obstructed by exostoses. Surfers were t

Function of the upper extremities in hereditary multiple exostoses.

The radiographic anatomy, functional status, and impairment ratings of twenty-eight patients (fifty-six extremities) who had hereditary multiple exostoses were evaluated. The patient (or the parent) also subjectively graded the function of each extremity with use of a standard rating-assessment tool. Degenerative joint disease was evident in three (5 per cent) of the fifty-six extremities at the time of follow-up, when the patients were an average of twenty-one years old. With use of the hand test of Jebsen et al., the average score was in the forty-seventh percentile for the dominant extremit

A Rare Case of Hereditary Multiple Exostoses in a Woman.

Hereditary multiple exostosis (HME) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by multiple bony spurs or lumps, commonly affecting the long bones. This case report exposes the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of HME in a 28-year-old female nurse, who initially presented with persistent bilateral knee pain. After extensive evaluation involving orthopaedic and oncology specialists, the diagnosis of HME was made. Despite the discovery of multiple exostoses, the patient reported improvement following a tailored physiotherapy regimen. This case study underscores the complexity and bro

[The Taniguchi classification in cases of multiple cartilaginous exostoses].

27 patients treated surgically at Child Orthopaedic Clinic of Pomeranian Medical Academy between 1974-1996 for multiple cartilaginous exostosis (Aclasia Diaphysealis Keith) were classified into three groups according to the Taniguchi classification. This classification is based on whether multiple cartilaginous exostoses are present on distal forearm. Group I--no involvement of the distal forearm (n = 2), in group II involvement of the distal forearm without shortening of either bone (n = 7) was stated. Group III consists of members with involvement of the distal forearm with shortening the ra

Can Multiple Hereditary Exostoses Overlap With Mesomelic Dysplasia?

BACKGROUND: We studied an unusual combination of severe short stature, mesomelia (Leri-Weill dyschondrosteosis syndrome), and multiple exostosis in several family subjects over three generations. The pattern of inheritance was compatible with autosomal dominant. METHODS: Of 21 affected members over three generations, shortness of stature, associated with mesomelia resembling Leri-Weill dyschondrosteosis syndrome with no exostoses was evident in three family subjects. The rest of the family subjects manifested with normal height, and yet multiple exostoses. In this family, the skeletal manifes

Total knee arthroplasty in patients with multiple hereditary exostoses.

We present a case report of a patient with severe valgus deformity of the right knee due to multiple hereditary exostoses (MHEs) treated with total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The surgical management of MHE affecting the knee encompasses exostoses resection, joint deformity rectification, and limb-length discrepancy alignment. On rare occasions, distraction osteogenesis and TKA have been used to correct valgus deformities of the knee. TKA in MHE patients with knee involvement has only been described in 6 cases. Several considerations, such as extensive knowledge of frequently occurring skeletal a

Hemiepiphyseal stapling for ankle valgus in multiple hereditary exostoses.

If left uncorrected, valgus ankle deformity in multiple hereditary exostoses can cause significant disability in skeletally immature children and in adults. Various management methods have been described, including hemiepiphyseal stapling, transphyseal screw placement, fibular-Achilles tenodesis, distal tibial osteotomy, and ablative epiphyseodesis. In this article, we report the cases of 3 skeletally immature children who had undergone hemiepiphyseal stapling of the medial distal tibial epiphysis for correction of valgus ankle deformity in multiple hereditary exostoses. [Spinal cord compression in multiple cartilagineous exostoses (case report)].

A 53-year-old patient with multiple cartilagineous exostoses developed narrowing of the thoracic spinal canal with compression of the cord and spastic paraplegia. The importance of radiologic examination of the whole spine as well as of the extremities is emphasized. When there is an exostosis in the spine neurologic examination disclosing cord compression should be carried out at regular intervals. If there are signs of cord compression, early decompressive laminectomy is the treatment of choice.

Radiation exposure in multiple hereditary exostoses: A retrospective review.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to ionizing radiation in patients with Multiple Hereditary Exostoses (MHE) is inevitable and necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of MHE. Radiation exposure has many potentially dangerous consequences, including the increased risk of developing cancer. This is especially concerning in the pediatric patient population since children are more likely to develop adverse effects from radiation than adults. This study aimed to quantify radiation exposure over a five-year period among patients diagnosed with MHE since such information is not currently available in the litera

Endoscopic transcanal removal of symptomatic external auditory canal exostoses.

Exostoses are bony outgrowths of the external auditory canal (EAC) that can lead to cerumen entrapment, recurrent infections, and conductive hearing loss. When surgical removal is indicated, a drill or osteotome may be used via a post-auricular, endaural, or transcanal approach. Studies suggest that exostoses removed by transcanal osteotome result in decreased morbidity when compared to open, drilled approaches; however, inadvertent injury to the facial nerve or inner ear is a theoretical concern given the restrictive geometry of the EAC and challenges of visualizing the tip of the chisel thro
