[Bowel imaging--capsule endoscopy].

The small bowel has ever since been the "black box" of endoscopy. The long distance from mouth to anus limits the use of conventional endoscopy for the multiple complex looped configurations. For some years now the new technology of wireless capsule endoscopy allows the endoscopic imaging of the complete small bowel. After ingestion of a small pill-size video capsule a continuous series of images is transmitted to an external recorder, whose data can be reviewed after completion of the examination. Compared to other diagnostic tools like push-enteroscopy, capsule endoscopy proves higher diagno

Spontaneous rotation and propulsion of suspended capsules in active nematics.

We investigate the dynamics of elastic capsules suspended in two-dimensional active nematic fluids using lattice Boltzmann simulations. The capsules, modeled as flexible membranes enclosing active internal regions, exhibit a rich variety of behaviors shaped by their geometry and the interplay between internal and external activity. Circular capsules with active interiors undergo persistent rotation driven by internally confined +1/2 topological defects. Axisymmetric capsules, such as boomerangs, develop directed motion along their axis of symmetry due to unbalanced active forces generated by d

Factors involved in inflammation-induced developmental white matter damage.

Developmental white matter damage is a brain pathology associated with several long-term neurological disorders. An inflammatory insult has been suggested as the major instigating event. This study investigated the relative influence of inflammation, blood-brain barrier permeability and glial ontogeny in white matter damage. Systemic inflammation was induced in Monodelphis domestica (opossum) by serial intraperitoneal injections of lipopolysaccharide at different stages of brain development. Volume of white matter was estimated for the external capsule. Blood-brain barrier permeability was ass

Magnetic resonance imaging detects cerebral gray and white matter injury correlated with cognitive impairments in diabetic db/db mice.

Type-2 diabetes not only causes gray matter injury but also induces widespread white matter damages, which may contribute the cognitive impairments. This study aimed to assess the structural alterations of the gray and white matter in 20-week-old diabetic db/db mice using magnetic resonance imaging including T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and to correlate them with the cognitive performance detected by Morris water maze (MWM). The results revealed impaired spatial learning and memory in db/db mice. T2WI detected severe brain atrophy involving the hippocampus and

NODDI highlights recovery mechanisms in white and gray matter in ischemic stroke following human stem cell treatment.

PURPOSE: Diffusion MRI offers insight into ischemic stroke progression in both human and rodent models. However, diffusion MRI to evaluate therapeutic application of mesenchymal stem cells is limited. Robust analytical techniques are required to identify potential physiological changes as a function of cell therapy in stroke. Here, we seek to establish Neurite Orientation Dispersion and Density Imaging (NODDI) as a feasible method in evaluating stroke evolution in response to cell-based therapeutics. METHODS: Diffusion MRI data at 21.1T were acquired from 16 male rats. Rats were grouped rando

Incidence of Intracapsular Placement When Inserting Medial Talar Body Schanz Pins: An Anatomic Study.

OBJECTIVES: Medial talar body pins may be inserted to provide points of fixation in the hindfoot when applying external fixators. Because of the proximity to the ankle joint, there is a risk of intracapsular pin placement. We hypothesized that intracapsular placement is common when inserting medial talar body pins. METHODS: Medial talar body pins were inserted in 12 fresh frozen cadaver ankles. Arthrography of each ankle was then performed to determine whether the pin was intracapsular. Each pin was then removed, and fluoroscopy was repeated to evaluate for contrast extravasation from the pin

[Herniation of the soft tissue of the temporomandibular joint into the external auditory canal].

The bone between the external auditory meatus and temporomandibular joint may be destroyed as a result of canaloplasty or malignant otitis externa. This may lead to herniation of the joint capsule into the external auditory canal. Spontaneous herniation through a foramen of Huschke (bony dehiscence in the anterior wall of the tympanic bone) is rare. We present a case of spontaneous herniation with otorrhea.

A novel microporous polyurethane vascular graft: in vivo evaluation of the UTA prosthesis implanted as infra-renal aortic substitute in dogs.

A novel microporous polyurethane blood conduit developed at the University of Texas at Arlington was implanted as an infra-renal substitute in dogs. The prosthesis was fabricated by precipitating a solution of the polymer with dry nitrogen onto a rotating mandrel. The grafts were sterilized either by gamma radiation (series I) or ethylene oxide (series II); they were implanted for the following prescheduled periods: 4, 24, 48 hours, and 1 week (short-term) and 2, 4 weeks, 3 and 6 months (medium-term). The thrombohematological characteristics of each animal were evaluated prior to implantation

The effect of a glenoid defect on anteroinferior stability of the shoulder after Bankart repair: a cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: An osseous defect of the glenoid rim is sometimes caused by multiple recurrent dislocations of the shoulder. It is generally thought that a large defect should be treated with bone-grafting, but there is a lack of consensus with regard to how large a defect must be in order to necessitate this procedure. Some investigators have proposed that a defect must involve at least one-third of the glenoid surface in order to necessitate bone-grafting. However, it is difficult to determine (1) whether a defect involves one-third of the glenoid surface and (2) whether a defect of this size is

Effect of surgical timing in outcomes in Hispanic patients after arthroscopic capsular release in diabetic and idiopathic adhesive capsulitis.

BackgroundAdhesive capsulitis of the shoulder is a painful and debilitating condition. While the majority of patients improve with conservative treatment, those who do not improve require surgery such as arthroscopic capsular release (ACR) for symptom relief. However, there is limited literature regarding the optimal timeframe to proceed with surgery.MethodsThis retrospective cohort evaluated 134 Hispanic patients who underwent ACR for the treatment of adhesive capsulitis. Patients were divided into an early and a delayed treatment group that included all patients. Patients were then divided i

Posture Tracking of Active Capsule Endoscopes Integrated with Magnetic Actuation Using Hall-Effect Sensors.

A capsule endoscope (CE) provides noninvasive access to the gastrointestinal tract, offering diagnostic information that cannot be obtained through external imaging alone. However, during the examination inside the stomach, the CE's posture may change rapidly as it moves within a dynamically deforming organ, making it difficult to determine its orientation using only the onboard camera feedback. To address this problem, this study proposes a method that employs an external array of Hall Effect Sensors (HES) to estimate the capsule's position and orientation in real time, based on the magnetic

Quantitative MRI Evaluation of Coracohumeral Ligament and Inferior Glenohumeral Capsule Thickening in Adhesive Capsulitis: Correlation with Range of Motion and Edema Patterns.

BACKGROUND: Adhesive capsulitis involves capsular fibrosis and restricted shoulder movements, particularly external rotation and abduction. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enables assessment of capsular and ligamentous thickening. The relationship between capsular thickness, range of motion (ROM), and rotator cuff and biceps tendon pathologies remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the coracohumeral ligament and inferior glenohumeral capsule thickness, shoulder range of motion, and MRI-detected edema patterns in patients with adhesive capsulitis. METHODS: T

[Stress on the rotator cuff sutures in relation to joint position].

UNLABELLED: In a vitro study we evaluated the influence of surgical technique on the postoperative tension of the supraspinatus tendon in rotator cuff ruptures. In ten shoulder specimens Hall-Effect Strain Gauge (HEST) were implanted in the supraspinatus tendon close to the insertion at the humerus. We documented the tension in specimens with intact rotator cuff as well as after reconstruction of small and large tears in different joint positions. In the specimens with an intact rotator cuff there was almost no tension registered. Only in adduction with external rotation and flexion we found s
