Associations between extreme weather events and child undernutrition: evidence from sub-Saharan Africa, 2010-2019.

BACKGROUND: Extreme weather events, or natural disasters, present a large and increasing threat to human health, infrastructure and food security, including in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where the burden of undernutrition is high. However, research about associations between natural disasters and undernutrition in early childhood is limited. METHODS: We combined anthropometric data of children aged 0-59 months from 51 Demographic and Health Surveys datasets collected from 2010 to 2019 in 30 countries in SSA with information on natural disaster events (flood, drought, other) from the Emergency

Exploring spatio-temporal changes in coastal recreational fisheries and potential links to extreme weather events.

Extreme weather events across coastal environments are expected to increase in frequency under predicted climate change scenarios. These events can impact coastal recreational fisheries and their supporting ecosystems by influencing the productivity of fish stocks or altering behaviours and decision-making among fishers. Using off-site telephone/diary survey data on estuarine and oceanic recreational fishing activity in eastern Australia, we analyse interannual and geographic variability in bream (Acanthopagrus spp) and snapper (Chrysophrys auratus) catch, total effort and total catch per unit

Impact of extreme weather on dengue fever infection in four Asian countries: A modelling analysis.

The rapid spread of dengue fever (DF) infection has posed severe threats to global health. Environmental factors, such as weather conditions, are believed to regulate DF spread. While previous research reported inconsistent change of DF risk with varying weather conditions, few of them evaluated the impact of extreme weather conditions on DF infection risk. This study aims to examine the short-term associations between extreme temperatures, extreme rainfall, and DF infection risk in South and Southeast Asia. A total of 35 locations in Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand were included,

Extreme weather conditions and dengue outbreak in Guangdong, China: Spatial heterogeneity based on climate variability.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown associations between local weather factors and dengue incidence in tropical and subtropical regions. However, spatial variability in those associations remains unclear and evidence is scarce regarding the effects of weather extremes. OBJECTIVES: We examined spatial variability in the effects of various weather conditions on the unprecedented dengue outbreak in Guangdong province of China in 2014 and explored how city characteristics modify weather-related risk. METHODS: A Bayesian spatial conditional autoregressive model was used to examine the overall

Meta-analysis reveals less sensitivity of non-native animals than natives to extreme weather worldwide.

Extreme weather events (EWEs; for example, heatwaves, cold spells, storms, floods and droughts) and non-native species invasions are two major threats to global biodiversity and are increasing in both frequency and consequences. Here we synthesize 443 studies and apply multilevel mixed-effects metaregression analyses to compare the responses of 187 non-native and 1,852 native animal species across terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems to different types of EWE. Our results show that marine animals, regardless of whether they are non-native or native, are overall insensitive to EWEs, ex

Impact of weather extremes on the spatiotemporal dynamics of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases are highly sensitive to environmental and climatic conditions, which can directly affect vector behavior, parasite development, and transmission dynamics. Identifying the key meteorological drivers of these diseases and understanding the timing of their impacts is crucial for enhancing public health preparedness. This study focuses on visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Brazil; a parasitic vector-borne disease spread by the bite of infected sandflies whose distribution is heavily influenced by environmental conditions. METHODOLOGY: We analyzed monthly confirmed VL

Extreme weather events and pathways to mental health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic review.

Climate change has led to more frequent and intense extreme weather events (EWEs) globally, with sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) being disproportionately affected. Given the region's socioeconomic vulnerability and strong reliance on agriculture for subsistence, EWEs have the potential to affect the local population's mental health. The present systematic review synthesizes evidence on the impacts of EWEs on mental health in SSA, examining moderators and the pathways by which EWEs affect mental health, and identifying particularly vulnerable populations. In accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, we s

Modeling the Burden of Extreme Weather Events in a Large Network of International HIV Care Cohorts.

Extreme weather events (EWEs) continue to threaten the health and well-being of populations across the globe. However, risk from drought and floods is not evenly distributed spatially nor are all populations equally at risk for poor health outcomes. Globally, people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) face a particular set of challenges with EWE exposure including increased susceptibility to disease progression from care disruptions and medication adherence, and general population concentration in areas where rainfall is both highly variable and key to economic well-being. To mitigate the impacts of

The Impact of Climate Change and Extreme Weather Conditions on Cardiovascular Health and Acute Cardiovascular Diseases.

Climate change is widely recognized as one of the most significant challenges facing our planet and human civilization. Human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, leading to a warming of the Earth's climate. The relationship between climate change and cardiovascular (CV) health, mediated by air pollution and increased ambient temperatures, is complex and very heterogeneous. The main mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of CV disease at extreme temperatures involve several regulatory pathways, inc

Zoonotic spillover and extreme weather events drive the global outbreaks of airborne viral emerging infectious diseases.

Outbreaks of airborne viral emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) cause an increasing burden on global public health, particularly with a backdrop of intensified climate change. However, infection sources and drivers for outbreaks of airborne viral EIDs remain unknown. Here, we aim to explore the driving mechanisms of outbreaks based on the one health perspective. Outbreak information for 20 types of airborne viral EIDs was collected from the Global Infectious Disease and Epidemiology Network database and a systematic literature review. Four statistically significant and high-risk spatiotemporal

Associations between Weather, Air Quality and Moderate Extreme Cancer-Related Mortality Events in Augsburg, Southern Germany.

While many authors have described the adverse health effects of poor air quality and meteorological extremes, there remain inconsistencies on a regional scale as well as uncertainty about the single and joint effects of atmospheric predictors. In this context, we investigated the short-term impacts of weather and air quality on moderate extreme cancer-related mortality events for the urban area of Augsburg, Southern Germany, during the period 2000-2017. First, single effects were uncovered by applying a case-crossover routine. The overall impact was assessed by performing a Mann-Whitney U test

Projecting long-term excess risks of major infectious diseases associated with future extreme weather events in Thailand.

Climate change is postulated to impact infectious disease transmission, yet few studies have characterised the excess risks of infectious diseases associated with extreme weather events. To address this, we conducted a study estimating and projecting the impacts of extreme heat and precipitation on the incidence of major infectious diseases in Thailand. We developed, fitted and validated an analytical framework to model province-level disease cases and their relationship with extreme weather indicators based on historical data. We used generalised additive models to delineate the relationship

A review of early childhood psychosocial interventions following extreme weather events in low- and middle-income countries.

AIMS: As a result of climate change, extreme weather events have increased in frequency, representing one of the most pressing concerns to physical and mental health globally, especially for children. Research suggests that extreme weather events uniquely and adversely affect children in low- and middle-income countries due to developmental and contextual factors. Given the advantages of early intervention, it is critical to aggregate and evaluate current interventions to support this population. This review aims to synthesise evidence on the impact of interventions targeting the development,
