The Topical Novel Formulations of Interferon α-2в Effectively Inhibit HSV-1 Keratitis in the Rabbit Eye Model and HSV-2 Genital Herpes in Mice.

Herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) are widespread human pathogens that establish chronic latent infections leading to recurrent episodes. Current treatments are limited, necessitating the development of novel antiviral strategies. This study aimed to assess the antiviral efficacy of novel topical formulations containing interferon alpha-2b (IFN α-2b) against HSV-1 and HSV-2. The formulations, Oftalmoferon® forte (eye drops) and Interferon Vaginal Tablets, demonstrated potent antiviral effects against HSV-1 and HSV-2 in Vero cells, respectively, with concentration-dependen

Ranpirnase (OKG-0301), a Novel Ribonuclease, Demonstrates Antiviral Activity against Adenovirus in the Ad5/NZW Rabbit Ocular Replication Model.

Adenovirus ocular infections are common ocular viral infections seen worldwide, for which there is no approved antiviral therapy available. Ranpirnase is a novel ribonuclease which preferentially degrades tRNA resulting in an inhibition of protein synthesis. The study goal was to determine the anti-adenoviral activity of topical formulations of ranpirnase (OKG-0301) on adenoviral replication in the Ad5/NZW rabbit ocular replication model. NZW rabbits were inoculated in both eyes with human adenovirus type 5 (HAdV5) after corneal scarification. A day later, topical therapy was initiated in both

HSV-1 Infection in Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells: A Possible Contribution to Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is associated with eye infections. Specifically, the acute consequences of eye infections have been extensively studied. This review gathers information on possible collateral damage caused by HSV-1 in the retina, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a neurodegenerative disease. The synthesis and accumulation of Amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) is a key hallmark in these types of pathologies. AMD is a disease of multifactorial origin, and viral infections play an important role in its development. It is known that once this virus has entered the eye, it can

The clinical use of human leukocyte interferon in viral infections.

This review presents the results of the clinical use of human leukocyte interferon (HLI) in certain diseases with viral etiology. Viral infections with manifestations in the eye, skin, and/or mucous membranes and in the respiratory system were treated with HLI by local application. HLI was incorporated into ointment, oil suspension, powder, dilution for inhalation, and dilution for subcutaneous and subconjunctival injections. The treatment in some of the diseases yielded statistical results that were highly significant in favor of interferon.

A novel 5-lipoxygenase-activating protein inhibitor, AM679, reduces inflammation in the respiratory syncytial virus-infected mouse eye.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an important cause of viral respiratory disease in children, and RSV bronchiolitis has been associated with the development of asthma in childhood. RSV spreads from the eye and nose to the human respiratory tract. Correlative studies of humans and direct infection studies of BALB/c mice have established the eye as a significant pathway of entry of RSV to the lung. At the same time, RSV infection of the eye produces symptoms resembling allergic conjunctivitis. Cysteinyl leukotrienes (CysLTs) are known promoters of allergy and inflammation, and the first step

[Etiology of infectious diseases of the outside of the eye].

This study emphasizes the importance of accurate diagnosis and therapy. Modern laboratory techniques were used to scan conjunctival swabs from 287 patients with 305 red eyes between 1.1. 1985 and 1.6. 1985. 17 patients (5.9%) showed Chlamydia infection. The main bacterial organism found was Staphylococcus, mostly of a resistant strain. Allergic conjunctivitis and typical viral infections were not considered in this study. As reported in the recent literature eye infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis are increasing in number.

Discontinuation of highly active antiretroviral therapy leads to cryptococcal meningitis/choroiditis in an AIDS patient.

BACKGROUND: Cryptococcus neoformans is an opportunistic pathogen that can manifest in immunocompromised patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Prevention of cryptococcosis and other opportunistic diseases is an objective in the management of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. The goal of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is to reduce the viral loads and enhance CD4 counts in HIV-infected patients. These 2 mechanisms keep HIV-infected patients healthier and enhance their immune systems, thus reducing and often preventing opportunistic infections such as

Updated safety precautions and guidance on eye banking procedures during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a highly infectious coronavirus causing the COVID-19 pandemic. Although airborne spread through infectious respiratory droplets is the primary source of transmission, recent literature has suggested the ocular surface may be able to harbor viral particles. Here, we aim to discuss how SARS-CoV-2 affects the ocular surface and updated guidance on how SARS-CoV-2 transmission should be considered in the setting of eye banking and corneal transplantation procedures. RECENT FINDINGS: SARS-CoV-2 RNA can be found on th

Aqueous and vitreous humor samples for the diagnosis of cytomegalovirus retinitis.

PURPOSE/METHODS: Techniques for detection of viral DNA based on the polymerase chain reaction are increasingly being applied to ocular fluids; however, the clinical significance of such findings can sometimes be unclear. Two patients had the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in whom different herpesviruses were detected in aqueous and vitreous fluids from the involved eye. RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: In both patients dual viral infections were present and the application of polymerase chain reaction-based methods to ocular fluids made a useful contribution to the treatment of the patients.

[Infectious uveitis].

Half a century ago, bacterial diseases such as tuberculosis and syphilis were thought to cause the majority of cases of uveitis. Nowadays, a number of infectious diseases are responsible for uveitis. In our countries, herpes virus and toxoplasmosis are the principal causes of uveitis. Furthermore, because specific antimicrobial therapy can be curative and prevent long-term visual sequel, early diagnosis of infectious causes of uveitis should be a priority for all practitioners.

Hand hygiene and instrument sanitization in ophthalmology clinics.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews the various challenges in infection control in eye clinics and successful measures taken to prevent nosocomial infections. RECENT FINDINGS: The Center for Disease Control recommends hand-washing when hands are visibly soiled, and after direct contact with patients, and inanimate objects such as medical equipment. Published studies have identified poor hygiene in clinical settings as a major cause of nosocomial outbreaks, particularly in cases of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC). Some studies of EKC outbreaks are able to support direct observation of

Absence of CD80 reduces HSV-1 replication in the eye and delays reactivation but not latency levels.

Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) infections are among the most frequent serious viral eye infections in the U.S. and are a major cause of viral-induced blindness. HSV-1 infection is known to induce T cell activation, proliferation, and differentiation that play crucial roles in the development of virus-induced inflammatory lesions, leading to eye disease and causing chronic corneal damage. CD80 is a co-stimulatory molecule and plays a leading role in T cell differentiation. Previous efforts to limit lesion severity by controlling inflammation at the cellular level led us to ask whether mice knoc
