Pasteurella canis Isolation following Penetrating Eye Injury: A Case Report.

A 3-year-old boy presented with history of trauma to the left eye after he accidentally injured his eye with a broom stick made up from coconut skewers. There was history of cats as their pets but not dogs. Ocular examination revealed left superonasal conjunctival laceration and scleral perforation with prolapsed vitreous. Fundus examination showed minimal vitreous haemorrhage and flat retina. Conjunctiva swab at the wound site was sent for gram staining, culture, and sensitivity. He underwent scleral suturing, vitreous tap, and intravitreal injection of Ceftazidime and Amikacin. Vitreous tap

[Penetrating and perforating eye injuries with foreign bodies during motorized brush-cutting while wearing head protection gear].

BACKGROUND: Protective clothing is prescribed concerning gloves, shoes, protective trousers and a helmet for protection of hearing and the face during brush-cutter work. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seven patients were observed in a time period from 1994 to 1998. Mostly a nylon head protection had been used. The side of the helmet has no protection shield. The 1- to 4-mm large foreign bodies passed the head protection shield from the side or by entering through the holes of the nylon mesh which may be not small enough to stop the foreign body. A pars plana vitrectomy with foreign body removal was pe

[Electroretinography in the evaluation of vitreoretinal proliferative changes due to penetrating shell injury to the eye].

The influence of vitreoretinal proliferative changes on retinal electrogenesis and glioneuronal relationships was studied in 41 patients with penetrating shell injury to the eye. The early data of studies indicated that there is a reduction in the hanz-feldt amplitude on an electroretinogram (ERG). According to the data of optic coherent tomography (OCT), this corresponds to an exudative reactive response and to the development of vitreoretinal tractional changes in the retina in the central zone and at the site of a foreign body. Retinal electrogenetic changes were most pronounced at months 1

Morphological study of epiretinal membrane following posterior penetrating injury in the monkey eye.

Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) and epiretinal membranes occur in a number of vitreoretinal diseases. We have developed an experimental model in which we can provide the morphologic correlation of these dynamic processes. The method provides the opportunity to study epiretinal membrane formation with the scanning electron microscope (SEM); with SEM, some epiretinal membranes that could not be readily detected either clinically or by routine light microscopy can now be identified and studied in detail. We performed an experimental posterior penetrating injury with injection of autologous wh

Combined posterior contusion and penetrating injury in the pig eye. II. Histological features.

The main histological features observed after an experimental posterior contusion injury in the pig eye were haemorrhage from the choroidal vessels into the subretinal space and into the vitreous, uveal vessel dilatation, and an inflammatory reaction. These changes resolved during the first 2 weeks, and the subretinal haemorrhage was replaced by a fibrocellular membrane. The addition of a posterior penetrating injury resulted in fibrocellular proliferation at the wound site 6 days after injury and in formation of vitreoretinal traction membranes and subsequent traction retinal detachment. Management of partially absorbed white soft cataract post penetrating injury to eye.

BACKGROUND: A measurable burden to the emergency ophthalmology department is represented by ocular trauma in pediatric patients. Traumatic cataracts still result in visual disability despite great advancements in diagnostic and treatment methods. Cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation aids in the improvement of visual acuity in such cases. Duration of trauma is an important prognostic factor for recovery of visual acuity before amblyopia sets in young patients with penetrating ocular injury. PURPOSE: This video deals with the management of a case of partially absorbed traum

Penetrating head injury with bilateral eye avulsion due to Himalayan bear bite.

The Himalayan black bear (Ursus thibetanus or Selenarctos thibetanus), although an omnivore, is more carnivorous than its American counterpart. It is also more aggressive towards humans and is a threatened species because of the deforestation in the Himalayas. Furthermore, poverty, encroachment of the forest, extensive deforestation, lack of education and living near the forest are factors that increase the probability of such animal injuries. We report the case of a 35-year-old woman who suffered a severe penetrating head injury with scalp and bilateral eye avulsion, which was managed success

Experimental posterior penetrating eye injury in the rhesus monkey: vitreous-lens admixture.

A standardised experimental posterior penetrating eye injury in the rhesus monkey with the vitreous-lens admixture resulted in limited fibrous ingrowth from the wound and minimal traction on the peripheral retina. Microscopically inflammation was noted in the iris, ciliary body, and as a perivascular infiltrate of the inner retina. Periretinal membranes did not occur, and cellular proliferation within the vitreous was less marked than observed after an identical wound and simulated vitreous haemorrhage in previously reported studies. The lens may be a less important stimulus to intravitreal fi

[Primary pars plana vitrectomy in the treatment of penetrating eye injuries involving intraocular foreign bodies in the vitreous body ].

The method of choice in the treatment of penetrating eye injuries affecting the vitreous body with an intraocular foreign body is in the majority of patients primary pars plana vitrectomy with transvitreal extraction of the foreign body (FB). During the period from April 1999 till September 2000 the authors treated thus at the Ophthalmological Clinic of the General Faculty Hospital and 1st Medical Faculty Charles University Prague 26 eyes of 26 young men with an average age of 34 years. The mean interval between the injury and primary PPV was 8.5 days. The patients were followed up on average

Experimental posterior penetrating eye injury in the rabbit. II. Histology of wound, vitreous, and retina.

The histological findings of the wound, the vitreous, and the retina in the rabbit eye with experimental posterior penetrating injury are described. Wound healing had just begun at 3 days after injury and was well established by 9 to 12 days. It involved proliferation of cells from the episclera and from the choroid. The progression to a fibrous ingrowth from the wound occurred only in eyes with blood in the vitreous. The intravitreal fibroblastic proliferation had begen at 6 days after injury and seemed to be derived from the choroid, the nonpigmented ciliary epithelium and, posteriorly, from

Histology of wound, vitreous, and retina in experimental posterior penetrating eye injury in the rhesus monkey.

We performed a histologic study to support our clinical observations on the mechanisms responsible for traction retinal detachment after a penetrating injury in the rhesus monkey eye. The monkey eyes (40 eyes; 40 monkeys) were characterized by intraocular fibrosis with the formation of a cyclitic membrane and epiretinal and subretinal membranes. The progression to a fibrous ingrowth from the wound occurred only in eyes with blood in the vitreous. The intravitreal fibroblastic proliferation had its origin mainly from the stroma of the ciliary body and choroid at the wound but probably also from

Method of production and natural history of experimental posterior penetrating eye injury in the rhesus monkey.

We developed an experimental model for a posterior penetrating eye injury that resulted in traction retinal detachment in 21 rhesus monkey eyes. The standard injury was an incision through the pars plana with vitreous prolapse and incarceration; the wound was then carefully closed with microsurgical techniques. At one to two weeks after injury, detachment of the posterior vitreous occurred and detachment of the retina occurred between seven and 11 weeks. The development of retinal detachment was related to traction on the peripheral retina over the vitreous base; and to the contraction of epir

Management of a Penetrating Orbital Trauma from an Unusual Foreign Body with Associated Eye Injury.

The aim of this article is to describe the principles that should guide the management of an orbital trauma with ocular injury through an updated review of the literature and the study of a clinical case involving an 80-year-old woman who presented with a penetrating orbital wound due to a wooden foreign body with a closed ocular trauma. Satisfactory and stable results over time are determined by systematically analyzing and evaluating each aspect of the case following a surgical strategy based on the most current protocols.

Experimental posterior penetrating eye injury in the rabbit. I. Method of production and natural history.

A technique has been developed which produces an experimental posterior penetrating eye injury that reproducibly results in traction retinal detachment in rabbit eyes. The standard injury is an incision through the pars plana with vitreous prolapse and incarceration; the wound is then carefully closed with microsurgical techniques. It appears that blood in the vitreous is an essential factor in the development of vitreous traction and of traction retinal detachment. The model, which has been successfully transferred to Rhesus monkey eyes, is considered useful for further histological, electrom

Trauma-induced filtering bleb formation and blebitis 40 years following a penetrating eye injury.

A 49-year-old man presented to the emergency eye clinic with a 3-week history of redness, irritation and blurred vision in his right eye, with a noticeable lesion superotemporally on the conjunctiva. He had a previous ocular history of penetrating glass injury in the right eye at the age of 9 years (40 years ago), of which no surgical intervention was performed at that time, as his parents did not seek medical attention. Slit lamp examination revealed a thin, conjunctival cystic bleb at 10 o'clock position with surrounding conjunctival injection and chemosis at close proximity to the site of p

Coexistence of intraocular eyelashes and anterior chamber cyst after penetrating eye injury: a case presentation.

We herein describe a patient in whom two intraocular eyelashes and an anterior chamber cyst embedded into the anterior surface of the iris was detected following penetrating eye injury. After a one year asymptomatic period, the patient was hospitalized because of uveitic reaction in the anterior chamber which may be due to cyst development. The lashes and cyst were removed surgically, and examined pathologically. There was no complication in one year follow-up period.

An unusual case of penetrating eye injury caused by a bird: A case report with review of the pertinent literature.

Penetrating eye injuries caused by bird pecking are uncommon with less than 40 cases reported in the literature. In this article, we present a case of penetrating ocular injury caused by a bird along with pertinent literature review. An otherwise healthy 56-year old man presented to the emergency department complaining of right eye severe pain and decreased vision following trauma caused by a bittern bird. The patient was diagnosed with penetrating ocular injury & he underwent primary repair. On follow up, he was found to have traumatic cataract, which was operated, however, the surgery was co

Ultrastructure of traction retinal detachment in rhesus monkey eyes after a posterior penetrating ocular injury.

We studied the ultrastructural characteristics of an experimental model of traction retinal detachment secondary to a penetrating eye injury in the rhesus monkey. Cells with the characteristics of myofibroblasts were present in the intravitreal fibrous tissue and in epiretinal membranes. These cells were probably derived from many sources, and were capable of contraction through the mechanism of intracytoplasmic contractile proteins such as actin or myosin. The morphologic observations supported our hypothesis that traction retinal detachment is a cell-mediated event analogous to the processes
