We report a case of intracranial chordoma revealed by an isolated abducent nerve palsy in a 4 years old boy. We discuss the possible symptoms of intracranial chordomas and their clinical, radiological and histological diagnosis as well as differential diagnosis. We summarize the available therapeutic modalities and we emphasize the future advantages of proton beam therapy in these lesions.

Intrauterine infections are important causes of childhood blindness in both developed and developing countries. Chorioretinal scars are the most characteristic eye manifestation of a congenital or prenatal infection. Behçet's disease (BD) is a systemic disease of unknown etiology, characterized by multiple organ involvement. Although its incidence is high in the Mediterranean countries and in Japan, BD is not often found in German patients. We therefore compared the epidemiological and clinical involvement of BD in 39 patients of German and of Mediterranean origin. We report 2 cases of lattice corneal dystrophy type III and gelatinous drop-like corneal dystrophy predominantly manifested in one eye. These 2 corneal dystrophies are found frequently in Japan. The case of lattice corneal dystrophy type III is the second, and the case of gelatinous drop-like corneal dystrophy is the first report at this time.

The application of neuroimaging techniques to patients with Plasmodium falciparum infection has uncovered a wide range of brain changes not only in cerebral malaria but also in noncomatose patients. We propose several hypotheses to unify findings across the spectrum of clinical malaria in adults and highlight the urgent need to evaluate potential long-term effects of cerebral alterations on neurocognition in this understudied age group.

BACKGROUND: Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a genetic disorder that affects multiple organ systems, including the eye. The most common ocular manifestations include ectopia lentis and retinal detachment. The current literature qualitatively cites that MFS patients have miotic or "poorly dilating" pupils. This study was the first to quantitatively assess pupillary function in MFS patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 57 eyes from 29 MFS patients, 36 eyes from 18 pediatric age- and gender-matched controls, and 44 eyes from 22 adult age-matched controls were measured in a clinic-based cross sectional study.

Prospectively we performed an ophthalmological examination in 81 Hb SS and 97 Hb SC patients on the island of Curaçao, about half the estimated number of patients, based on gene frequency. These patients had not been selected on ophthalmological symptoms. Proliferative retinopathy was present in 2% of the Hb SS patients, and in 50% of the Hb SC patients (71% among those over 18 years old).
