Interactions between sensory pathways such as the visual and auditory systems are known to occur in the brain, but where they first occur is uncertain. Here, we show a multimodal interaction evident at the eardrum. Ear canal microphone measurements in humans (n = 19 ears in 16 subjects) and monkeys (n = 5 ears in three subjects) performing a saccadic eye movement task to visual targets indicated that the eardrum moves in conjunction with the eye movement. The eardrum motion was oscillatory and began as early as 10 ms before saccade onset in humans or with saccade onset in monkeys. These eardru

Accurate detection and interpretation of eye movement abnormalities often guides differential diagnosis, discussions on prognosis and disease mechanisms, and directed treatment of disabling visual symptoms and signs. A comprehensive clinical eye movement examination is high yield from a diagnostic standpoint; however, skillful recording and quantification of eye movements can increase detection of subclinical deficits, confirm clinical suspicions, guide therapeutics, and generate expansive research opportunities. This review encompasses an overview of the clinical eye movement examination, pro

While listening toan audiobook, listeners' attention may shift between the text and self-generated thoughts occurring during mind-wandering. Despite the growing use of audiobooks, little is known about how listeners process text when listening to it. The present study investigated the types of thought patterns that listeners have while listening to an audiobook, and whether and how these are reflected in eye movements. Participants (NStudy1 = 63, NStudy2 = 58) listened to an audio recording of a novel and responded to a 13-item mind-wandering questionnaire and a simple memory question 30 times

Recent studies applying machine learning (ML) to saccade and vergence eye movements have demonstrated the ability to distinguish individuals with dyslexia, learning disorders, or attention disorders from healthy individuals or those with other pathologies. Stroke patients are known to exhibit visual deficits and eye movement disorders. This study focused on saccade and vergence measurements using REMOBI technology V3 and the Pupil Core eye tracker. Eye movement data were automatically analyzed with the AIDEAL V3 (Artificial Intelligence Eye Movement Analysis) cloud software developed by Orasis

OBJECTIVE The precise threshold differentiating normal and elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) is variable among individuals. In the context of several pathophysiological conditions, elevated ICP leads to abnormalities in global cerebral functioning and impacts the function of cranial nerves (CNs), either or both of which may contribute to ocular dysmotility. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of elevated ICP on eye-tracking performed while patients were watching a short film clip. METHODS Awake patients requiring placement of an ICP monitor for clinical purposes underwent eye

Due to their brain damage, aphasic patients with acquired dyslexia often rely to a greater extent on lexical or segmental reading procedures. Thus, therapy intervention is mostly targeted on the more impaired reading strategy. In the present work we introduce a novel therapy approach based on real-time measurement of patients' eye movements as they attempt to read words. More specifically, an eye movement contingent technique of stepwise letter de-masking was used to support sequential reading, whereas fixation-dependent initial masking of non-central letters stimulated a lexical (parallel) re

Visual dot probe tasks are used to examine attentional biases towards threat faces in social phobia. Based on eye movement assessments, short presentation times of stimuli have been proposed to investigate initial attentional processes. However, it remains unclear if eye movements contribute to anxiety related biases as measured in dot probe tasks when presentation times below 200 ms are used. In this study the electrooculogram (EOG) was recorded in a sample of 17 participants with social phobia and 13 controls performing a visual dot probe task in two presentation time conditions. In the 175

The authors present findings from a behavioral task (visual paired comparison) using infrared eye-tracking that could potentially be useful in predicting the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Delay intervals of 2 seconds and 2 minutes were used between the initial viewing of a picture and when the picture was displayed alongside a novel picture. Eye-tracking revealed that at the 2-second delay, 6 patients with mild cognitive impairment, 15 matched control participants (normal control), and 4 neurological control participants with Parkinson's disease performed comparably, viewing the novel picture

Abnormal eye movements are often associated with psychiatric disorders. Eye movements are sensorimotor functions of the brain, and aging and sex would affect their characteristics. A precise understanding of normal eye movements is required to distinguish disease-related abnormalities from natural differences associated with aging or sex. To date, there is no multicohort study examining age-related dependency and sex effects of eye movements in healthy, normal individuals using large samples to ensure the robustness and reproducibility of the results. In this study, we aimed to provide finding

How do subtitles shape where learners look, and what they learn, in bilingual instructional video? Subtitles are increasingly central to instructional video in multilingual education, where learners must integrate spoken input with written text. In the present paper, we recorded eye movements while university students watched two-speaker instructional videos to test the effects of audio language (original L2 vs L1 dubbed) and subtitle language (L1 vs L2). Experiment 1a (N = 40 Spanish L1, English L2) contrasted original English audio with Spanish-dubbed versions, and we found that dubbing shif

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms with oculomotor dysfunction being a notable feature. This study aimed to determine the oculomotor function in patients with PD using video-oculography (VOG) and to identify the association between physiologic parameters and PD.
METHODS: The study enrolled 45 patients diagnosed with PD at onset and 45 age- and gender-matched healthy controls from July 2019 to July 2023. All participants underwent VOG testing. Eye movement parameters, including velocity, latency, gain, and accuracy, were quantified. The presen

PURPOSE: We investigated how the abnormalities of fixation eye movements (FEMs) of the amblyopic eye were linked with treatment outcomes following part-time patching therapy in children with amblyopia.
METHODS: We recruited 53 patients, with at least 12 months of patching, and measured FEMs at the end of treatment. Subjects were classified based on FEM waveforms (those without nystagmus = 21, those with nystagmus without fusion maldevelopment nystagmus (FMN) = 21, and those with FMN = 11) and based on clinical type of amblyopia (anisometropic = 18, strabismic = 6, and mixed = 29). OBJECTIVE: Dyslexia is the most common learning disorder that affects 5-10% of school aged children. Eye movement abnormalities and visual processing deficits have been reported in some of dyslexic children. Objective of this study is to compare the eye-movement patterns of Iranian dyslexic children with those of non-dyslexic children as they perform the oculomotor tests and to explore the relationship between their eye-movement patterns and their reading ability.
METHODS: Binocular eye movements were recorded by oculomotor subtype of videonystagmography (VNG) testing on 30 dyslexic children

Artificial grammar learning (AGL) has been probed with forced-choice behavioral tests (active tests). Recent attempts to probe the outcomes of learning (implicitly acquired knowledge) with eye-movement responses (passive tests) have shown null results. However, these latter studies have not tested for sensitivity effects, for example, increased eye movements on a printed violation. In this study, we tested for sensitivity effects in AGL tests with (Experiment 1) and without (Experiment 2) concurrent active tests (preference- and grammaticality classification) in an eye-tracking experiment. Previous eye movement studies of attentional bias in spider fear reported inconsistent results with respect to early attentional capture, suggesting that overt attentional capture only reliably occurs under specific circumstances. In addition, none of these studies explored covert attention. The present study examined attentional bias in spider phobia using a change detection paradigm that was expected to provide good conditions for documenting attentional capture. In contrast to our expectations, eye movement data showed that all participants' first fixations were fastest on general negative

This study examines cross-linguistic patterns of eye movements before, during, and after return sweeps-the saccades that move readers' gaze from one line of text to the next. Using data from 28 language samples representing 22 languages and multiple writing systems from the Multilingual Eye Movement Corpus project, we tested whether spatial and temporal characteristics of interline transitions reflect universal oculomotor mechanisms or language-specific factors. Results show that extreme fixations cover about 80% of each line across all languages, and fixation durations follow consistent posit

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) heterogeneity is frequently overlooked in current diagnostic approaches, despite evidence that certain subtypes, particularly MDD with psychotic symptoms (MDDwP), are associated with poorer prognoses. Eye movement assessment has demonstrated promise as a potential biomarker for psychiatric disorders; however, research into eye movement patterns in MDD with and without psychotic features is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the potential value of eye movement as a biomarker for MDD.
METHODS: This study enrolled 69 participants, including 15 pat

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is characterized by a loss of control of motor function that causes the presence of abnormal eye movements at early stages.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if, compared to normal sheep, HD sheep have abnormal eye movements.
METHODS: We measured eye movements in a transgenic sheep (Ovis aries) model of HD using a purpose-built, head-mounted sheep oculometer. This allows us to measure saccades without the need for either behavioral training or head fixation. At the age of testing (6 years old), the HD sheep were pre-manifest. We used 21 sheep (11 HD, 10 normal).

Proteomic-based technologies offer new opportunities to identify proteins that might reflect the cardiometabolic stress caused by different aspects of sleep-disordered breathing. We aimed to investigate whether severe obstructive sleep apnea and severe obstructive sleep apnea during rapid eye movement sleep are associated with changed levels of inflammatory and cardiac disease-related proteins in a population-based cohort of women. In the community-based "Sleep and Health in Women" (SHE) cohort study, 400 women underwent polysomnography, anthropometric measurements and blood sampling. Two prot

Studies of eye movement have become an essential tool of basic neuroscience research. Measures of eye movement have been applied to higher brain functions such as cognition, social behavior, and higher-level decision-making. With the development of eye trackers, a growing body of research has described eye movements in relation to mental disorders, reporting that the basic oculomotor properties of patients with mental disorders differ from those of healthy controls. Using discrimination analysis, several independent research groups have used eye movements to differentiate patients with schizop
