Eye movements in children with opsoclonus-polymyoclonus.

The anatomical localisation of the abnormality underlying opsoclonus-polymyoclonus-the "Dancing Eye Syndrome"-is uncertain and both the brainstem and cerebellum have been implicated. We used electrooculographic recordings to assess the eye movements in five children with this syndrome. Overshoot dysmetria was the consistent feature for the saccades of all five cases. One patient was also assessed after the main symptoms of ataxia and opsoclonus (saccadic oscillations, without an intersaccadic interval) had resolved and the saccades were found to remain hypermetric. Smooth pursuit and optokinet

Abnormal eye movements in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

We report 3 patients with autopsy-proven Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease who, early in their course, developed abnormal eye movements that included periodic alternating nystagmus and slow vertical saccades. These findings suggested involvement of the cerebellar nodulus and uvula, and the brainstem reticular formation, respectively. Cerebellar ataxia was also an early manifestation and, in 1 patient, a frontal lobe brain biopsy was normal at a time when ocular motor and cerebellar signs were conspicuous. As the disease progressed, all saccades and quick phases of nystagmus were lost, but periodic alt

The perception of heading during eye movements.

When a person walks through a rigid environment while holding eyes and head fixed, the pattern of retinal motion flows radially away from a point, the focus of expansion (Fig. 1a). Under such conditions of translation, heading corresponds to the focus of expansion and people identify it readily. But when making an eye/head movement to track an object off to the side, retinal motion is no longer radial (Fig. 1b). Heading perception in such situations has been modelled in two ways. Extra-retinal models monitor the velocity of rotational movements through proprioceptive or efference information f

Head and eye movements in congenital nystagmus.

Patients with congenital nystagmus exhibit a wide range of unusual nystagmus waveforms and strategies to obtain maximum visual acuity. We investigated target acquisition strategies, head-eye coordination, and the effects of alteration of head position relative to gravity on congenital nystagmus waveforms in five patients. No changes in the nystagmus were found when patients' heads were placed in different positions relative to gravity. Two patients had distinctive abnormalities of head-eye coordination characterized both by failure of eye movement to precede head movement and by position of th

Spontaneous Abnormal Vertical Eye Movements of Coma.

Spontaneous vertical eye movements in the critical care setting are often a source of confusion and alarm; while their origin remains at least partly theoretical, understanding their classification and associated clinical implications can inform the diagnostic workup and further clinical management. This case describes a patient who demonstrated ocular dipping: slow conjugate downward eye movements with a quick return to primary gaze. Ocular dipping is a rare phenomenon that was initially described in patients with hypoxic brain injury and has since been described in only a handful of cases. D

Consequences of eye movements for spatial selectivity.

What determines spatial tuning in the visual system? Standard views rely on the assumption that spatial information is directly inherited from the relative position of photoreceptors and shaped by neuronal connectivity.1,2 However, human eyes are always in motion during fixation,3,4,5,6 so retinal neurons receive temporal modulations that depend on the interaction of the spatial structure of the stimulus with eye movements. It has long been hypothesized that these modulations might contribute to spatial encoding,7,8,9,10,11,12 a proposal supported by several recent observations.13,14,15,16 A f

Fixational eye movements enable robust edge detection.

Human vision relies on mechanisms that respond to luminance edges in space and time. Most edge models use orientation-selective mechanisms on multiple spatial scales and operate on static inputs assuming that edge processing occurs within a single fixational instance. Recent studies, however, demonstrate functionally relevant temporal modulations of the sensory input due to fixational eye movements. Here we propose a spatiotemporal model of human edge detection that combines elements of spatial and active vision. The model augments a spatial vision model by temporal filtering and shifts the in

Tracking Eye Movements During Sleep in Mice.

Eye movement is not only for adjusting the visual field and maintaining the stability of visual information on the retina, but also provides an external manifestation of the cognitive status of the brain. Recent studies showed similarity in eye movement patterns between wakefulness and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, indicating that the brain status of REM sleep likely resembles that of awake status. REM sleep in humans could be divided into phasic REM and tonic REM sleep according to the difference in eye movement frequencies. Mice are the most commonly used animal model for studying neuronal

Functional connectivity during smooth pursuit eye movements.

Smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM) hold the image of a slowly moving stimulus on the fovea. The neural system underlying SPEM primarily includes visual, parietal, and frontal areas. In the present study, we investigated how these areas are functionally coupled and how these couplings are influenced by target motion frequency. To this end, healthy participants (n = 57) were instructed to follow a sinusoidal target stimulus moving horizontally at two different frequencies (0.2 Hz, 0.4 Hz). Eye movements and blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) activity were recorded simultaneously. Functional co

Eye movements in implicit artificial grammar learning.

Artificial grammar learning (AGL) has been probed with forced-choice behavioral tests (active tests). Recent attempts to probe the outcomes of learning (implicitly acquired knowledge) with eye-movement responses (passive tests) have shown null results. However, these latter studies have not tested for sensitivity effects, for example, increased eye movements on a printed violation. In this study, we tested for sensitivity effects in AGL tests with (Experiment 1) and without (Experiment 2) concurrent active tests (preference- and grammaticality classification) in an eye-tracking experiment. Eye Movements as Indicators of Vestibular Dysfunction.

Virtual reality technologies are in wide use in sport psychology. An advantage of this kind of technology is the possibility to assess sportspeople's readiness to perform complex movements. This study is aimed at developing a method for the evaluation of vestibular function disturbances in young skaters. Such disturbances may occur while skaters are performing rotation movements. To achieve this goal, we induced a vection illusion, accompanied by virtual environment rotation in a CAVE virtual reality system. Vestibular disturbances were tested for two groups-professional skaters and people who

Eye movements in patients with neurodegenerative disorders.

The neural pathways and brain regions involved in eye movements during ocular fixation and gaze control include the cerebrum, brainstem and cerebellum, and abnormal eye movements can indicate the presence of neurodegeneration. In some patients, oculomotor signs are key to making a diagnosis. Careful clinical examination of eye movements in patients with neurodegenerative disorders is, therefore, an invaluable adjunct to neurological and cognitive assessments. Eye movement recordings in the laboratory are generally not necessary for diagnostic purposes, but can be a useful addition to the clini

Smooth pursuit eye movements and optokinetic nystagmus.

Asthenoteratozoospermia, a prevalent cause of male infertility, lacks a well-defined etiology. DNAH12 is a special dynein featured by the absence of a microtubule-binding domain, however, its functions in spermatogenesis remain largely unknown. Through comprehensive genetic analyses involving whole-exome sequencing and subsequent Sanger sequencing on infertile patients and fertile controls from six distinct families, we unveiled six biallelic mutations in DNAH12 that co-segregate recessively with male infertility in the studied families. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed pronounc

Motion aftereffect elicits smooth pursuit eye movements.

A moving stimulus is normally required to elicit smooth pursuit eye movements that serve to keep the retinal image of moving objects on the fovea. Recent experiments have shown that in cases where motion cues are ambiguous, pursuit eye movements tend to agree in direction and speed with the percept of motion. Here, we exploit the motion aftereffect (MAE) to show for the first time that smooth pursuit eye movements can also be elicited by the illusory motion of a stationary stimulus. After prolonged exposure to a moving stimulus, subjects show reliable pursuit of a physically stationary stimulu

Eye movements: pathophysiology, examination and clinical importance.

The ocular motor system finds, focuses, fixates and follows objects to ensure optimal vision as we move through our environment. To see clearly, images must be held steady on the retina. If images move across the retina at more than a few degrees per second they appear blurred. Thus, one function of eye movements is to hold images of the world steady on the retina, and this is accomplished by the gaze-holding mechanisms--fixation, vestibular and optokinetic. Visual acuity is best at the fovea, and so a second function of eye movements is to change the line of sight so that the image of an obje

Timing variability of repetitive saccadic eye movements.

We assessed the suitability of using the Wing and Kristofferson model for timing repetitive motor responses to analyse timing variability during repetitive saccadic eye movements. The model decomposes total timing variability (TV) into a central timing component (CV) and a peripheral motor delay component (MV). Eight normal subjects made voluntary horizontal saccades, in darkness, in synchrony with a regular auditory metronome. After 20 saccades had been produced, the metronome was switched off and subjects continued responding at the same frequency until 31 further saccades had been made. Int

Binocular saccadic eye movements in multiple sclerosis.

We attempted to increase the sensitivity for detection of abnormal binocular saccadic eye movements, particularly of the internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO) type associated with multiple sclerosis (MS). Saccades of 10 and 20 degrees were binocularly recorded with scleral sensor coils in 10 normal control subjects and 26 patients with definite or probable MS, seven of whom had a clinically manifest INO in one or both directions. In the cases in which this was accompanied by a dissociated nystagmus of the abducting eye, our recordings showed that such secondary saccades were also expressed, in a
