Isolation and characterization of two acaricidal compounds from Calpurnia aurea subsp. aurea (Fabaceae) leaf extract.

The menace caused by ticks and tick-borne diseases is a major limitation to the livestock industry in Africa. The high costs and non-availability of synthetic, chemical acaricides to resource-limited farmers, resistance of ticks to available acaricides and residue problems in meat and milk consumed by humans further complicate matters. The use of plant extracts as a possible source of new acaricides has received much interest in the last decade. In our endeavour to discover natural acaricidal compounds, tick toxicant bioassays were conducted and the chloroform fraction of Calpurnia aurea ethan

Dalbergia palo-escrito (Fabaceae) contains phenolic compounds with anthelmintic effect on the parasitic nematode Haemonchus contortus.

This study evaluated the anthelmintic activity of a hydroalcoholic extract (HA-E) from Dalbergia palo-escrito aerial parts against Haemonchus contortus using a bioguided approach. The egg hatching inhibition (EHI) assay was conducted to determine activity. The HA-E was partitioned into an aqueous fraction (Aq-F) and an ethyl acetate fraction (EtOAc-F). The EtOAc-F was fractioned by column chromatography into seven subfractions (PeF1 to PeF7). HA-E and EtOAc-F achieved 100% EHI at 50 and 1.0 mg/mL, respectively. Subfractions PeF1, PeF3, and PeF4a exhibited strong activity, with EC90 values of 0

Contribution to the Palynology and Its Taxonomic Relevance in Selected Taxa of Papilionoideae (Fabaceae) From Northeast India.

The Papilionoideae is a taxonomically complex subfamily within the Fabaceae. Pollen characteristics are often used as additional diagnostic features in the taxonomy of Papilionoideae. Unfortunately, the pollen morphology of the Papilionoideae in India remains poorly understood. This study aims to bridge the palynological knowledge gap in the Papilionoideae taxa, focusing on Northeast India. In this investigation, light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to examine the pollen morphology of 10 species belonging to nine genera of Papilionoideae: Aeschynomene americana, Cajanus s

Flavonoid C-glycosides in Fabaceae seeds: From structural diversity and functional significance to human health benefits.

Flavonoid C-glycosides (FCGs) are a distinct class of plant secondary metabolites characterized by stable carbon-carbon glycosidic bonds that confer resistance to hydrolysis. Although less frequent than flavonoid O-glycosides, FCGs occur across numerous plant families and tissues and display multiple biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and anticancer effects. Recent studies report exceptional abundance and molecular diversity of FCGs in fenugreek seeds and in the germ of other Fabaceae species, such as carob, Neltuma spp., and tara. This review cr

Antimalarial activity of root extract of Tephrosia villosa L. Pers. (Fabaceae) on Plasmodium berghei-infected mice.

Scientists are urged to discover new drugs since treatment resistance makes malaria hard to control. One important source of new drugs is medicinal plants. The antimalarial qualities of Tephrosia villosa roots in vitro demonstrated its good effect to treat malaria infections. On the other hand, its effect in vivo is unknown. This study filled the gap by evaluating the antimalarial effectiveness of Tephrosia villosa's Dichloromethane/methanol (1:1) extract against Plasmodium berghei infection in a mouse model.Dichloromethane/methanol (1:1) was used to extract the dried, powdered roots of Tephro

Phytochemical Analysis and Antiproliferative Activity of Ulex gallii Planch. (Fabaceae), a Medicinal Plant from Galicia (Spain).

The genus Ulex comprises thirteen accepted species of perennial shrubs in the family Fabaceae. In Galicia (Spain) many of these are considered spontaneous colonizing species, which are easy to establish and maintain. Among them, Ulex gallii Planch. is used in traditional medicine for the same anti-infective, hypotensive and diuretic purposes as Ulex europaeus L., which is the most studied species. Likewise, some studies have described the antitumoral properties of several species. However, there are few scientific studies that justify the use of Ulex gallii Planch. and nothing has been reporte

Adaptive gains through repeated gene loss: parallel evolution of cyanogenesis polymorphisms in the genus Trifolium (Fabaceae).

Variation in cyanogenesis (hydrogen cyanide release following tissue damage) was first noted in populations of white clover more than a century ago, and subsequent decades of research have established this system as a classic example of an adaptive chemical defence polymorphism. Here, we document polymorphisms for cyanogenic components in several relatives of white clover, and we determine the molecular basis of this trans-specific adaptive variation. One hundred and thirty-nine plants, representing 13 of the 14 species within Trifolium section Trifoliastrum, plus additional species across the
