Brain activity underlying face and face pareidolia processing: an ERP study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Face pareidolia is described as an interpretation of any unrelated object seen for the first time as a face. It is still unclear how to face pareidolia is processed. In this study, the neural basis of face and face pareidolia processing was investigated through recording event-related potentials (ERPs). METHODS: The ERPs were recorded from 35 right-handed and healthy participants in response to faces and face pareidolia. Amplitudes and latencies of N170, vertex-positive potential (VPP), and N250 components were analyzed, and current source density (CSD) maps relevant t

Electrical stimulation of human fusiform face-selective regions distorts face perception.

Face-selective neural responses in the human fusiform gyrus have been widely examined. However, their causal role in human face perception is largely unknown. Here, we used a multimodal approach of electrocorticography (ECoG), high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and electrical brain stimulation (EBS) to directly investigate the causal role of face-selective neural responses of the fusiform gyrus (FG) in face perception in a patient implanted with subdural electrodes in the right inferior temporal lobe. High-resolution fMRI identified two distinct FG face-selective reg

Surgical anatomy of the face: implications for modern face-lift techniques.

OBJECTIVE: To delineate the anatomic architecture of the melolabial fold with surrounding structures and to elucidate potential implications for face-lift techniques. METHODS: A total of 100 facial halves (from 50 cadaveric heads) were studied, including gross and microscopic dissection and histologic findings. Laboratory findings were correlated with intraoperative findings in more than 150 deep-plane face-lift dissections (300 facial halves) performed during the study period. RESULTS: In contrast to previous reports, the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) was not found to form an

Less impairment in face imagery than face perception in early prosopagnosia.

There have been a number of reports of preserved face imagery in prosopagnosia. We put this issue to experimental test by comparing the performance of MJH, a 34-year-old prosopagnosic since the age of 5, to controls on tasks where the participants had to judge faces of current celebrities, either in terms of overall similarity (Of Bette Midler, Hillary Clinton, and Diane Sawyer, whose face looks least like the other two?) or on individual features (Is Ronald Reagan's nose pointy?). For each task, a performance measure reflecting the degree of agreement of each participant with the average of t

[Callus distraction of the mid-face in severe mid-face hypoplasia].

Callus distraction in the treatment of severe midfacial hypoplasia/atrophy may offer new therapeutical possibilities. Between May 1998 and March 1999, six patients underwent a subtotal Le Fort I-II osteotomy with subsequent distraction via a haloborne distractor (RED). Five patients suffered from CLP, four patients were totally or almost edentulous in the upper jaw. Corrections of sagittal discrepancies were possible in all cases (distraction 16-31 mm). No case of increased velopharyngeal insufficiency was seen. In one patient the halo had to be refixed. Three patients suffered from tension-li

The effect of face inversion on the human fusiform face area.

Inversion severely impairs the recognition of greyscale faces and the ability to see the stimulus as a face in two-tone Mooney images. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to study the effect of face inversion on the human fusiform face area (FFA). MR signal intensity from the FFA was reduced when greyscale faces were presented upside-down, but this effect was small and inconsistent across subjects when subjects were required to attend to both upright and inverted faces. However when two-tone faces were inverted, the MR signal from the FFA was substantially reduced for all subjects. W

Asymmetries in face perception: component processes, face specificity and expertise effects.

Three experiments were carried out to analyze the component processes contributing to observed asymmetries in face perception, to determine whether these asymmetries occur for complex visuospatial stimuli other than human faces, and to investigate the effects of expertise on the asymmetries. Two component processes contributed to the observed asymmetries: perceptual bias (PB) in the observer and face asymmetries (FA). There was no PB effect for complex visuospatial stimuli other than human faces (landscapes, abstract paintings and animal faces). Expertise effects were investigated by examining

Dyadic flexibility mediates the relation between parent conflict and infants' vagal reactivity during the Face-to-Face Still-Face.

Parent conflict is related to attenuated infant vagal reactivity, suggesting less effective regulation. Because infants' self-regulation develops in the context of coregulation, the current study examined a novel measure, flexibility, purported to reflect dyadic reorganization in response to contextual demands. Flexibility was expected to mediate the relation between greater conflict and lesser vagal reactivity during the reunion episode of the Face-to-Face Still-Face (FFSF). Six-month-old infants' and their mothers' (N = 53) affective behaviors were observed during the FFSF and heart rate dat

Physiological synchrony predicts reduced reciprocity only in face-to-face interactions.

Across species, cooperative decisions are often asymmetric: one individual risks their own resources before knowing whether others will reciprocate. Such uncertainty is central to the evolution of trust and reciprocal exchanges. Physiological synchrony is frequently assumed to support cooperation, yet it remains unclear both how synchrony arises and how it functions in these asymmetric social interactions. We tested whether mutual visibility shapes physiological synchrony, and whether synchrony in turn predicts cooperative behaviour in repeated trust-reciprocity exchanges. Skin conductance syn

Dissociating retina- and face-centered reference frames of human face recognition.

Face identity recognition is a core function of the human brain, predominantly driven by horizontally oriented facial cues. While face processing largely operates in a face-centered reference frame, it is not devoid of retinotopic sensitivity. Addressing whether face rotation influences the orientation tuning profile of identity recognition enables a direct empirical test of the reference frame of human face identification. Forty-two young adults performed identity recognition of famous faces filtered to restrict content to narrow orientation bands (i.e., from 0° to 150°, in 30°-steps), and pr

Fast face-selective responses in prefrontal face patches of the macaque.

Face processing models propose gradually more complex receptive field properties culminating in invariant representations in anterior inferotemporal cortex (aITC), leading to late socio-emotionally relevant encoding in pre- and orbitofrontal cortex (POC). Top-down facilitation models, however, predict that some lower-level POC neurons respond faster than aITC. To resolve this discrepancy, we recorded from 2,459 neurons in fMRI-defined POC and aITC face patches. POC patches are more heterogeneous, containing smaller fractions of face-selective neurons than aITC and a mixture of responses to fac

Limited impact of teledermoscopy on referrals to face-to-face dermatology.

BACKGROUND: Teledermoscopy improves teledermatology clinical outcomes, but the practical impact of this and other teleconsultation variables on patient management are unclear. We assessed the impact of these variables, including dermoscopy, on face-to-face (F2F) referrals to optimize effort by imagers and dermatologists. METHODS: Using retrospective chart review, we retrieved demographic, consultation, and outcome variables from 377 interfacility teleconsultations sent to San Francisco Veterans Affairs Health Care System (SFVAHCS) between September 2018 to March 2019 from another VA facility

A causal relationship between face-patch activity and face-detection behavior.

The primate brain contains distinct areas densely populated by face-selective neurons. One of these, face-patch ML, contains neurons selective for contrast relationships between face parts. Such contrast-relationships can serve as powerful heuristics for face detection. However, it is unknown whether neurons with such selectivity actually support face-detection behavior. Here, we devised a naturalistic face-detection task and combined it with fMRI-guided pharmacological inactivation of ML to test whether ML is of critical importance for real-world face detection. We found that inactivation of

Recognition of face and non-face stimuli in autistic spectrum disorder.

The ability to remember faces is critical for the development of social competence. From childhood to adulthood, we acquire a high level of expertise in the recognition of facial images, and neural processes become dedicated to sustaining competence. Many people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have poor face recognition memory; changes in hairstyle or other non-facial features in an otherwise familiar person affect their recollection skills. The observation implies that they may not use the configuration of the inner face to achieve memory competence, but bolster performance in other ways.

Face bow and articulator for planning orthognathic surgery: 1 face bow.

Orthognathic surgery that involves movement of the maxilla relative to the skull is usually planned using casts mounted on an articulator. Accurate positioning of the maxilla relative to the skull is essential for reliable planning, but current methods of mounting casts on articulators are inaccurate and unreliable. We propose that the casts should be mounted using the relation between the horizontal plane and the resting head position to define the position of the skull. A photographic study of 10 subjects confirmed the reproducibility of the head position and its relation to the horizontal p

Magnetic face-to-face interaction and electrocommunication in chromium sandwich compounds.

The reaction of [{(C5Me5)CrCl2}2] with [2.2](1,4)cyclophane gave [(C5Me5)Cr{[2.2](1,4)cyclophane}] (1) and [(C5Me5)Cr{[2.2](1,4)cyclophane}Cr(C5Me5)] (2), depending on the reaction conditions. X-ray structure analysis showed 2 to be a ministack which in turn is stacked in the lattice. The chromium atoms are 6.035 A apart, and the distortion of the benzene rings to boat-shaped moieties is less pronounced than in parent [2.2](1,4)cyclophane. The NMR and EPR spectra were consistent with a S=1/2 ground state for 1 and with two interacting S=1/2 centers in 2. Spin density was found in the ligand pi

The face, beauty, and symmetry: perceiving asymmetry in beautiful faces.

The relationship between bilateral facial symmetry and beauty remains to be clarified. Here, straight head-on photographs of "beautiful" faces from the collections of professional modeling agencies were selected. First, beauty ratings were obtained for these faces. Then, the authors created symmetrical left-left and right-right composites of the beautiful faces and asked a new group of subjects to choose the most attractive pair member. "Same" responses were allowed. No difference between the left-left and right-right composites was revealed but significant differences were obtained between "s

The effect of face patch microstimulation on perception of faces and objects.

What is the range of stimuli encoded by face-selective regions of the brain? We asked how electrical microstimulation of face patches in macaque inferotemporal cortex affects perception of faces and objects. We found that microstimulation strongly distorted face percepts and that this effect depended on precise targeting to the center of face patches. While microstimulation had no effect on the percept of many non-face objects, it did affect the percept of some, including non-face objects whose shape is consistent with a face (for example, apples) as well as somewhat facelike abstract images (
