Familial myopathies with restricted distribution, facial weakness and inflammatory changes in affected muscles.

A myopathy characterized by restricted involvement of few muscles and inflammatory cell infiltration was observed in three families. In the first family, clinical features, hereditary transmission and biopsy findings were consistent with the diagnosis of facioscapulohumeral dystrophy. However in three of the four affected members, the occurrence of atrophies was specifically initiated by severe muscular pain. In the second family two 8-year-old identical twins had both marked facial weakness and atrophy limited to the right quadriceps femoris. In the third family, marked asymmetry of muscular

[Effects of facial rehabilitation exercise on the mood, facial expressions, and facial muscle activities in patients with Parkinson's disease].

AIM: Facial expressions are often impaired in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Few studies have examined the effects of head and neck rehabilitation in patients with PD using a facial expression analysis. In the present study, to further elucidate the effects of facial rehabilitation exercise in patients with PD, a three-dimensional facial expression analysis with FaceReader™ and surface electromyography (EMG) were performed in order to assess the facial expressions and muscle activities, respectively. The effects of such exercises on the mood and mental health were also evaluated. MET

Recordings from the facial nucleus in the rat: signs of abnormal facial muscle response.

On the basis of results of electrophysiological studies in patients undergoing microvascular decompression (MVD) operations to relieve hemifacial spasm (HFS), we have postulated that the abnormal muscle response characteristically found in patients with HFS is the result of irritation of the facial nerve by the blood vessel that is compressing the facial nerve near its exit from the brainstem in these patients. This abnormal muscle response is seen when one branch of the facial nerve is electrically stimulated and recordings are made from muscles that are innervated by other branches of the fa

Facial muscle reanimation by transcutaneous electrical stimulation for peripheral facial nerve palsy.

Reanimation of paralysed facial muscles by electrical stimulation has been studied extensively in animal models, but human studies in this field are largely lacking. Twenty-four subjects with a peripheral facial nerve palsy with a median duration of three years were enrolled. We studied activations of four facial muscles with electrical stimulation using surface electrodes. In subjects whose voluntary movement was severely impaired or completely absent, the electrical stimulation produced a movement that was greater in amplitude compared with the voluntary effort in 10 out of 18 subjects in th

[Newly developed biofeedback program for facial muscle training in patients with facial paralysis].

BACKGROUND: Patients with facial paralysis are significantly limited in their quality of life (QoL). If no irreversible nerve damage is apparent, intensive training of the facial muscles is recommended in addition to drug-based therapy with cortisone. In order to improve training, we have developed a digital biofeedback mirror with motion magnification to indirectly influence the vegetative nervous system. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to evaluate the reliability of the biofeedback program compared to clinical examination and classification according to House-Brackmann. METHODS: Our bi

Experimental study on the influence of facial muscle activity on the facial mesostructure bones in rabbits.

UNLABELLED: Based on the functional matrix concept, scientists developed the hypothesis that soft tissue acting on certain bone pieces determines the process of facial growth. The possibility to modify muscle influence in the phase of facial development, or in postoperative of corrective surgery is of great preventive importance and it should be better investigated, since it could reduce the number and impact of these procedures. STUDY DESIGN: experimental in rabbits. AIM: to estimate the relevance of facial muscle activity on facial bones in lab rabbits. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 37 rabbits o

Electroneurographic facial muscle pattern in Bell's palsy.

To study the electroneurographic facial muscle pattern in Bell's palsy over time, electroneurographic recordings in the frontalis, orbicularis oculi, nasalis, and mentalis muscle regions were performed early (mean, day 11) and 1 and 3 months after the onset of the condition in 30 consecutive patients. The correlation between facial muscle electroneurographic recordings over time was also calculated. An additional aim was to assess whether further prognostic information could be obtained by electroneurographic recordings in more than one facial region. The recovery pattern was similar in all 4

Facial asymmetry in superior oblique muscle palsy.

Facial asymmetry is an underrecognized association or sequela of torticollis in congenital or very early onset superior oblique muscle palsy, which when present in an adult, helps to confirm chronicity and prevent unnecessary neurologic evaluation. Nineteen cases of superior oblique muscle palsy were studied prospectively. Of 12 unilateral palsies presenting in adulthood, 9 were considered congenital by history and 7 (77%) of these had facial asymmetry. Large vertical fusional vergence amplitudes and torticollis, on review of childhood photographs, confirmed the early onset of the palsy in eac

Assessment of Masticatory and Cervical Muscles' Thickness by Ultrasonography in Patients with Facial Asymmetry.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the thickness of masticatory and cervical muscles (temporalis, masseter and sternocleidomastoid) and facial asymmetries in young patients. METHODS: 21 subjects were selected, through a detailed anamnesis and clinical examination, in order to assess the normality of oral tissues, the presence of normal occlusion, the absence of alteration in tooth dimensions and of congenital or developmental anomalies of lips, mouth or face. RESULTS: The present investigation showed that temporalis, masseter and sternocleidomastoid mu

Selective stimulation of facial muscles with a penetrating electrode array in the feline model.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Permanent facial nerve injury is a difficult challenge for both patients and physicians given its potential for debilitating functional, cosmetic, and psychological sequelae. Although current surgical interventions have provided considerable advancements in facial nerve rehabilitation, they often fail to fully address all impairments. We aim to introduce an alternative approach to facial nerve rehabilitation. STUDY DESIGN: Acute experiments in animals with normal facial function. METHODS: The study included three anesthetized cats. Four facial muscles (levator auris lo

Relation between vertical facial asymmetry and postural changes of the spine and ancillary muscles.

Some patients presenting with head tilt maintain binocular vision by the adaptation of the spinal position. It is suggested that in cases of hyper eye facial asymmetry, where one eye is positioned higher than the other, the head will tilt to equalize the ocular heights in order to maintain binocularity during concentrated visual tasks. This phenomenon is a subdivision of ocular torticollis. The continuous head tilt causes adaptations by the spine and its ancillary muscles. Early treatment by small vertical prisms can alleviate stress discomfort and prevent it in the future.

Treatment of facial muscles affected by Bell's palsy with high-voltage electrical muscle stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: This report discusses high-voltage electrical muscle stimulation and chiropractic manipulation used to treat two patients who suffered from Bell's palsy. CLINICAL FEATURES: Case A: A 15-yr-old with left sided facial palsy was seen 2 days after the onset of symptoms. Upon observation, the left upper and lower eyelids were drooping and the left eye had excessive tearing. Motion palpation indicated multiple fixations in the cervical spine. Laboratory studies showed a microcytic anemia. A clinical diagnosis of Bell's palsy (House-Brackmann Grade V) and microcytic anemia was made. Case

Facial reanimation by muscle-nerve neurotization after facial nerve sacrifice. Case report.

INTRODUCTION: Recovering a certain degree of mimicry after sacrifice of the facial nerve is a clinically recognized finding. The authors report a case of hemifacial reanimation suggesting a phenomenon of neurotization from muscle-to-nerve. CLINICAL CASE: A woman benefited from a parotidectomy with sacrifice of the left facial nerve indicated for recurrent tumor in the gland. The distal branches of the facial nerve, isolated at the time of resection, were buried in the masseter muscle underneath. The patient recovered a voluntary hémifacial motricity. The electromyographic analysis of the moto

Test-retest reliability of high-resolution surface electromyographic activities of facial muscles during facial expressions in healthy adults: A prospective observational study.

OBJECTIVES: Surface electromyography (sEMG) is a standard method for psycho-physiological research to evaluate emotional expressions or in a clinical setting to analyze facial muscle function. High-resolution sEMG shows the best results to discriminate between different facial expressions. Nevertheless, the test-retest reliability of high-resolution facial sEMG is not analyzed in detail yet, as good reliability is a necessary prerequisite for its repeated clinical application. METHODS: Thirty-six healthy adult participants (53% female, 18-67 years) were included. Electromyograms were recorded
