Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common neoplasm of the salivary glands. Though a benign lesion, proper recognition and management of this process is needed to avoid increasing enlargement of the mass, facial nerve impairment, risk of malignant degeneration, and recurrence after surgical resection. The epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment options for this neoplasm are discussed.

Twenty-four patients with maxillofacial pathology were examined with computed tomography (CT) using thin (1.5-5.0 mm) sections allowing computer reformation of images in multiple planes. Eight patients also had pluridirectional tomography. The patients included 14 with facial trauma, four with acute paranasal sinus infections, and six with suspected neoplasms. High resolution CT with reformations allowed thorough evaluation of facial trauma. Fracture sites were correctly identified, as were the relation of fragments to vital structures. The form of structural facial alteration was easily asses

Facial nerve paralysis, although uncommon in the pediatric population, occurs from several causes, including congenital deformities, infection, trauma, and neoplasms. Similar to the adult population, management of facial nerve disorders in children includes treatment for eye exposure, nasal obstruction/deviation, smile asymmetry, drooling, lack of labial function, and synkinesis. Free tissue transfer dynamic restoration is the preferred method for smile restoration in this population, with outcomes exceeding those of similar procedures in adults.

Neoplasms in the infratemporal fossa (ITF) are rare and insidious lesions that cause various symptoms due to involvement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), paranasal sinuses, and orbit. Here, we report a case of metastatic non-small cell lung adenocarcinoma in the ITF. The patient presented with facial pain and limited mouth opening, which did not respond to treatment for TMJ disorder, and a neoplasm was discovered in the ITF through medical imaging. With an open biopsy, the diagnosis was finalized. This report suggested that the physician should consider lesions in the ITF when facial pain

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the misdiagnosis of facial nerve tumor and better understand facial nerve tumor.
METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with facial nerve tumor were undergone surgical treatment during January 1993 to September 2006. Eleven patients had been misdiagnosed. All patients were undergone pure tone audiometry, CT scan or MRI. Facial nerve function was evaluated with House-Brackmann grading system.
RESULTS: Eleven cases were misdiagnosed. Two cases were misdiagnosed as parotid tumor preoperatively. They were identified as facial never tumor because the masses originated from facial ne

The authors described the application of facial bone scintigraphy in 6 patients with acute and 47 patients with chronic sinusitis, 4 patients with cyst of maxillary sinus, 4 patients with sinus maxillary neoplasm and 4 patients with pyocele of frontal sinus. Facial bone scintigraphy was performed by gamma-camera Siemens Gammasonics ZLC-750 after intravenous administration of 15 mCi of 99mTcMDP in anteroposterior projection. The index of accumulation of the tracer (JAT) in maxillary sinus region was counted separately in men and in women in the reference group. In patients with purulent sinusit

PROBLEM: Temporal bone tumours are rare head and neck cancers that may involve both the parotid and the neck. In cases with concomitant temporal bone and parotid tissue involvement, tumour origin determination can be challenging. A tumour with parotid and temporal bone involvement is usually of temporal origin. The tumour may also be a rare parotid neoplasm with intratemporal invasion through the facial nerve, such as adenoid cystic carcinoma. These are slow-growing, yet locally aggressive tumours marked by late-stage distant metastases.
CASE REPORT: We describe a case of parotid adenoid cyst

A 70 years old male patient complained a sense of swelling on right facial, mild pain, and the obstruction of right nasal, no complain of facial numbness and toothache. Physical examination showed the slight bulging on right facial with mild tenderness, purulent nasal secretions on the right middle nasal meatus, and no significant neoplasm. CT scan showed that soft density tissue in the right maxillary sinus, and the high density tissue in some period. Postoperative diagnosis: carcinoma of maxillary sinus with fungal sinusitis.

Benign tumours account for approximately 60-80% of parotid neoplasms and among these, Warthin's tumour is the second most common benign neoplasm accounting for approximately 15% of all parotid epithelial tumours. The medical records of 100 consecutive patients with Warthin's tumour of the parotid gland admitted for treatment at the Department of Head and Neck Surgery and Otorhinolaryngology, Hospital A.C. Camargo, São Paulo, Brazil, between 1983 and 2011 were retrospectively analyzed. The surgical procedures included 104 (96%) subtotal parotidectomies and 4 (3.7%) total parotidectomies. One hu

THE AIM OF THE STUDY: Determination of the risk of postoperative complications in patients after surgical treatment of benign neoplasms of the parotid salivary glands.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The results of treatment of 228 patients with benign neoplasms of the parotid salivary gland in the period from 2019 to 2021 were analyzed. A questionnaire of 7 questions was formed the answers to which allowed patients to be assigned to a certain risk group: low, medium, high or extremely high. This gradation allows choosing the optimal method and scope of surgical treatment for each patient individually.

Giant cell tumors of bone (GCTBs) are benign osteolytic neoplasms that can be treated with either gross-total resection or subtotal resection with adjuvant radiotherapy. For the rare GCTB of the temporal bone, close proximity to critical structures can produce functional deficits and make gross-total resection difficult to achieve without significant morbidity. We present the case of a 28-year-old woman with progressive facial paresis, otalgia, neck pain, imbalance, and subjective hearing loss. She was found to have a facial nerve mass centered at the geniculate ganglion extending into the lab

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral facial palsy is rarely caused by primary neoplasms, which are mostly constituted of tumors of the central nervous system, head and neck, and leukemia.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 2-month-old male infant presented with asymmetric facial expression for 3 weeks. Physical examination revealed suspicious findings of right peripheral facial palsy. Computed tomography of the temporal bone revealed a suspicious bone tumor centered in the right petrous bone involving surrounding bones with extension into the middle ear cavity and inner ear. Subtotal resection of the tumor was perf

Facial nerve palsy is usually associated with a malignant parotid neoplasm; it is highly unusual for it to result from a benign situation, such as inflammation or infection of the parotid gland. Surgery along with prompt medical treatment is the mainstay, and in the majority of the patients, nerve paralysis recovers in the follow-up period. We report a case of a 50-year-old non-diabetic non-hypertensive female who presented with odynophagia, left-sided parotid swelling, and left facial nerve palsy. The diagnosis of facial nerve palsy due to a parotid abscess extending to the parapharyngeal spa

Fifty-eight patients suffering from intractable pain in the trigeminal distribution due to neoplasms of the intracranial or facial regions underwent controlled percutaneous coagulation of the Gasserian ganglion (trigeminal thermorhizotomy). Of them, 35 were evaluated at varying time intervals from the intervention (mean: 7 months). While pain was completely relieved in 71 per cent of cases at discharge, the follow-up examination was consistent with 49 per cent of analgesias. The rationale of percutaneous thermocoagulation in malignant facial pain is given and the pertinent literature summarize

As the facial nerve carries sensory, motor and parasympathetic fibres involved in facial muscle innervation, facial palsy results in functional and cosmetic impairment. It can result from a wide variety of causes like infectious processes, trauma, neoplasms, autoimmune diseases, and most commonly Bell's palsy, but it can also be of iatrogenic origin. The main ophthalmic sequel is lagophthalmos. The increased surface exposure increases the risk of keratitis, corneal ulceration, and potentially loss of vision. Treatment options are wide; some are temporary, some permanent. In addition to gold st

The differential diagnosis in 170 patients between birth and 18 years of age is reviewed. There are a number of obvious physical findings and historical features that allow one to make a diagnosis rather quickly. Pain, vesicles, a red pinna, vertigo, and sensorineural hearing loss suggest herpes zoster oticus. Slow progression beyond three weeks, recurrent facial paralysis involving the same side, facial twitching, weakness, or no return of function after six months indicate a neoplasm. Bilateral simultaneous facial paralysis indicates a cause other than Bell's palsy, such as Guillain-Barré sy

We report a case with symptoms of facial swelling, bilateral facial paralysis, dysphagia and aspiration. On electrophysiological studies, the right facial nerve was not excitable. The left facial nerve compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitude was severely dispersed and latency was mildly prolonged, consistent with demyelination. Cerebrospinal fluid examinations were normal. Anti-ganglioside antibodies and tumor markers were negative. BACKGROUND: Prospective studies on procedure-specific incidences of complications after benign parotid surgery are lacking. Predictive factors for postoperative facial dysfunction remain controversial.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective study on 132 patients undergoing parotid surgery for benign parotid neoplasms. We analyzed complication rates and assessed risk factors of postoperative transient facial palsy.
RESULTS: Facial palsy rate was 40.2% on the first postoperative day, 28.3% at 2 weeks, 3.9% at 6 months, and 1.6% at 12 months. Immediate postoperative palsy rates in subgroups of par
