Macular Damage in Glaucoma is Associated With Deficits in Facial Recognition.

PURPOSE: This report examines the relationship between glaucomatous macular damage and facial recognition. In addition, it assesses the role of contrast sensitivity (CS) as an intermediary step in the causal pathway between macular damage and impairment of facial recognition. DESIGN: Prospective cross-sectional study. METHODS: This study was conducted in a single tertiary care center. The study population included 144 eyes of 72 participants with a diagnosis of open angle glaucoma in one or both eyes and a visual acuity of 20/40 or better in each eye. The presence or absence of macular damag

Effects of childhood trauma on facial recognition of fear in psychosis.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood trauma has been reported as a risk factor for psychosis. Different types of traumatic experiences in childhood could lead to different clinical manifestations in psychotic disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied differences in social cognition (emotion recognition and theory of mind) and clinical symptoms in a sample of 62 patients with psychosis (less than 5 years of illness) and childhood trauma, analysing performance by trauma type. RESULTS: Psychotic patients with a history of childhood trauma other than sexual abuse were more capable of recognizing fear as a

Recognition of facially expressed emotions in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome.

The study investigated the ability to identify facially expressed emotions in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and its association with clinical parameters. Thirty-five FMS patients and 35 healthy controls accomplished a face recognition task. Additionally, pain severity, alexithymia, depression, anxiety, psychiatric co-morbidity and medication use were assessed. The patients displayed reduced task performance in terms of more misclassifications of emotional expressions than controls. Pain severity, alexithymia, depression and anxiety were inversely related to recognition performance, with pain sev

Facial expression recognition and emotional regulation in narcolepsy with cataplexy.

Cataplexy is pathognomonic of narcolepsy with cataplexy, and defined by a transient loss of muscle tone triggered by strong emotions. Recent researches suggest abnormal amygdala function in narcolepsy with cataplexy. Emotion treatment and emotional regulation strategies are complex functions involving cortical and limbic structures, like the amygdala. As the amygdala has been shown to play a role in facial emotion recognition, we tested the hypothesis that patients with narcolepsy with cataplexy would have impaired recognition of facial emotional expressions compared with patients affected wit

Alexithymia and facial emotion recognition in patients with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with anorexia or bulimia nervosa are reported to show high levels of alexithymia and to have difficulties recognizing facially displayed emotions. The current study tested whether it could be that facial emotion recognition is a basic skill that is independent from alexithymia. METHOD: We assessed emotion recognition skills and alexithymia in a group of 79 female inpatients with eating disorders and compared them with a group of 78 healthy female controls. Instruments used were the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, the Facially Expressed Emotion Labeling (FEEL) test, and the revi

Recognition of facial features of fetal alcohol syndrome in the newborn.

The diagnosis of an infant, especially a newborn, with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is difficult due to the fact that not all of the features are apparent at that time. Many cases are also missed due to inadequate knowledge of the mother's drinking pattern and because of the examining physician's lack of experience with the disorder. While conducting a study of the use of maternal blood markers to determine alcohol use in pregnancy, we have evaluated systematically the effects of alcohol on the newborn infant. We have developed a facial scoring system consisting of six of the features commo

Treatment and diagnostic subtype in facial affect recognition in schizophrenia.

Patients with schizophrenia have been described as having deficits in the ability to recognize facial expressions of emotion. We report the results of a study on the effects of global psychopathology, positive and negative symptoms, diagnostic subtype, and antipsychotic medications, on the ability of subjects with schizophrenia to recognize facial affect. Eighteen SCID diagnosed patients with schizophrenia and ten matched controls were evaluated at a drug-free baseline for ability to identify facial expression expressed in a standardized series of photographs, with concurrent measures of globa

Is There a Difference in Facial Emotion Recognition after Stroke with vs. without Central Facial Paresis?

The Facial Feedback Hypothesis (FFH) states that facial emotion recognition is based on the imitation of facial emotional expressions and the processing of physiological feedback. In the light of limited and contradictory evidence, this hypothesis is still being debated. Therefore, in the present study, emotion recognition was tested in patients with central facial paresis after stroke. Performance in facial vs. auditory emotion recognition was assessed in patients with vs. without facial paresis. The accuracy of objective facial emotion recognition was significantly lower in patients with vs.

Dynamic facial emotion recognition and affective prosody recognition are associated in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy.

Deficits in facial emotion recognition have frequently been established in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). However, static, rather than dynamic emotion recognition paradigms have been applied. Affective prosody has been insufficiently studied in TLE, and there is a lack of studies investigating associations between auditory and visual emotion recognition. We wished to investigate potential deficits in a dynamic morph task of facial emotion recognition and in an affective prosody recognition task, as well as associations between both tasks. 25 patients with TLE and 24 healthy controls (CG) perfor

Efficient recognition of facial expressions does not require motor simulation.

What mechanisms underlie facial expression recognition? A popular hypothesis holds that efficient facial expression recognition cannot be achieved by visual analysis alone but additionally requires a mechanism of motor simulation - an unconscious, covert imitation of the observed facial postures and movements. Here, we first discuss why this hypothesis does not necessarily follow from extant empirical evidence. Next, we report experimental evidence against the central premise of this view: we demonstrate that individuals can achieve normotypical efficient facial expression recognition despite

Impaired Recognition of Negative Facial Emotions in Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) have difficulty in recognising facial emotions, and there is evidence to suggest that there is a specific deficit in identifying negative facial emotions, such as sadness and anger. METHODS: This study investigated facial emotion recognition in 19 individuals with BDD compared with 21 healthy control participants who completed a facial emotion recognition task, in which they were asked to identify emotional expressions portrayed in neutral, happy, sad, fearful, or angry faces. RESULTS: Compared to the healthy control participants, the

Functional neural correlates of facial affect recognition impairment following TBI.

Facial affect recognition deficits following traumatic brain injury (TBI) have been well documented, as has their relationship with impairment in several other cognitive domains. However, little is known about the neurobiological mechanisms underlying affect recognition deficits, in particular mechanisms underlying different aspects of facial affect recognition (e.g., perceptual and interpretive processes). In the current study, 33 adults with moderate-to-severe TBI and 24 demographically matched healthy comparison (HC) participants completed an fMRI facial affect recognition study. While in t

Recognition of facial emotional expression in amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

We examined whether recognition of facial emotional expression would be affected in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). A total of 50 elderly persons met the initial inclusion criteria; 10 were subsequently excluded (Geriatric Depression Score > 5). 22 subjects were classified with aMCI based on published criteria (single domain aMCI [SD-aMCI], n = 10; multiple domain aMCI [MD-aMCI], n = 12); 18 subjects were cognitively normal. All underwent standard neurological and neuropsychological evaluations as well as tests of facial emotion recognition (FER) and famous faces identification (FFI

Disgust-specific impairment of facial expression recognition in Parkinson's disease.

There is contradictory evidence regarding whether the impairments of the recognition of emotional facial expressions in Parkinson's disease are specific to certain emotions such as disgust and fear. Generally, neurological case reports on emotion-specific impairments have been suspected of being confounded with the factor of task difficulty. Using a refined assessment method in which the difficulty factors were controlled by means of mixed facial expressions and item response theory, we attempted to clarify whether Parkinson's disease disproportionately impaired the recognition of specific emo

Facial injuries associated with cervical fractures: recognition, patterns, and management.

Publications in both the orthopedic and maxillofacial literature have noted the association of cervical spine and facial injuries. However, because the incidence of spinal injury is low, we found no study which documented the relationship between maxillofacial and cervical spine injuries. The present study reviewed 982 cervical spine injuries in two major trauma centers, finding a 19.3% incidence of facial injury. Fourteen per cent of patients had soft-tissue injuries and 8.6%, facial fractures. Important relationships were noted between fractures of the mandible and upper cervical spine, and

FaceScanPaliGemma multi-agent vision language models for facial attribute recognition.

Technologies for recognizing facial attributes such as race, gender, age, and emotion from images of human faces have several applications, including personalized advertising, sentiment analysis, and the study of demographic trends and social behaviors. Analyzing face images and facial expressions presents several challenges due to the complexity of human facial attributes and the diversity in representation. While numerous attempts have been made to improve facial attribute classification performance, there remains a strong demand for enhanced accuracy. In this paper, we propose "FaceScanPali

Near-Field Radio-Frequency for Real-Time Facial Expression Recognition.

The advent of smart wearable computing platforms in the form of VR/AR enhanced devices has unlocked new strides in mental wellness (through tele-health counseling), personalized spatial computing, and interactive content consumption. However, most current devices rely upon vision and audio based user inputs that pose privacy risks and often consume high amounts of power. In this work, we introduce a novel near-field radio-frequency (NFRF) based facial expression recognition (FER) system that is personal, privacy-respecting, and may be extended to commercially available wearable form-factors. Recognition of facial expressions from minimal five-point-light displays.

Facial expression recognition depends on both structural features (e.g., eye shape) and dynamic cues (e.g., muscle movements). However, the relative contribution of these information sources remains unclear, partly due to methodological challenges in isolating kinematic from configural information. Existing point-light display paradigms, while useful, typically employ numerous markers that still enable structural face recovery. Here, we introduce and validate the "Clepsydra" model-a minimal five-point configuration that captures the six basic emotions using markers on the eyebrows (×2), mouth

Acute Pain Recognition from Facial Expression Videos using Vision Transformers.

Pain assessment is significant for patients and clinicians in diagnosis and treatment injuries and disease. It could facilitate a patient's treatment process by monitoring patients' pain levels in an accurate and regular manner. Automated detection of pain from facial expressions is a useful technique to assess pain of patients with communication disabilities. In this study, video vision transformers (ViViT) enhanced for pain recognition tasks are presented to capture spatio-temporal, facial information relevant to estimating the binary classification of pain and, thus, to provide valuable ins
