Assessing demand and supply-side enabling and constraining factors on the provision and use of health services in urban slums of Southeast Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: In the face of rapid urbanization, developing countries like Nigeria are witnessing a surge in rural-urban migration, with a predominant concentration in low-income neighborhoods known as slums. The provision of appropriate health services in slums is limited due to their unplanned nature. Similarly, access and utilization of health services are constrained by many factors, especially the unavailability of formal healthcare providers in urban slums. This study investigated challenges and opportunities to the provision and use of health services in urban slums in two states in south

Predictors of institutional delivery service utilization in Ethiopia: an umbrella review.

INTRODUCTION: One of the global health's top priorities is improving maternal health. There is a high maternal mortality ratio, despite its major progress in the past two decades. Many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia, have not yet reached the sustainable development goal target. The majority of women die of labor and delivery-related complications, which are preventable if they had access to maternal health service utilization, particularly institutional delivery services. The low institutional delivery services utilization in Ethiopia was related to several factors. There

Pregnant women's perspectives on antenatal care utilization in Cameroon: a cross- sectional mixed-methods study.

Antenatal care (ANC) is essential for improving maternal and fetal health outcomes, yet utilization remains suboptimal in Cameroon. This study explored pregnant women's perspectives on determinants of ANC utilization and perceived quality of care in the Buea and Limbe Health Districts, conceptualizing satisfaction both as an outcome of service quality and a contextual influence on continued utilization. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was employed, comprising a cross-sectional survey of 410 pregnant women attending public, private, and faith-based health facilities, followed by

District decision-making for health in low-income settings: a qualitative study in Uttar Pradesh, India, on engaging the private health sector in sharing health-related data.

Health information systems are an important planning and monitoring tool for public health services, but may lack information from the private health sector. In this fourth article in a series on district decision-making for health, we assessed the extent of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH)-related data sharing between the private and public sectors in two districts of Uttar Pradesh, India; analysed barriers to data sharing; and identified key inputs required for data sharing. Between March 2013 and August 2014, we conducted 74 key informant interviews at national, state and district

The Role of Health Extension Workers in Linking Pregnant Women With Health Facilities for Delivery in Rural and Pastoralist Areas of Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Women's preference to give birth at home is deeply embedded in Ethiopian culture. Many women only go to health facilities if they have complications during birth. Health Extension Workers (HEWs) have been deployed to improve the utilization of maternal health services by bridging the gap between communities and health facilities. This study examined the barriers and facilitators for HEWs as they refer women to mid-level health facilities for birth. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted in three regions: Afar Region, Southern Nations Nationalities and People's Region and Tigra

Demand and supply analysis for maternal and child health services at the primary healthcare level in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: The low demand for maternal and child health services is a significant factor in Nigeria's high maternal death rate. This paper explores demand and supply-side determinants at the primary healthcare level, highlighting factors affecting provision and utilization. METHODS: This qualitative study was undertaken in Anambra state, southeast Nigeria. Anambra state was purposively chosen because a maternal and child health programme had just been implemented in the state. The three-delay model was used to analyze supply and demand factors that affect MCH services and improve access to c

Factors affecting postnatal care service utilization in Pyuthan district: A mixed method study.

The first hours, days, and weeks following childbirth are critical for the well-being of both the mother and newborn. Despite this significance, the postnatal period often receives inadequate attention in terms of quality care provision. In Nepal, the utilization of postnatal care (PNC) services remains a challenging issue. Employing a facility-based concurrent triangulation mixed-method approach, this study aimed to identify factors associated with PNC service utilization, as well as its facilitators and barriers. A quantitative survey involved 243 mothers who had given birth in the six month

Does the use of adjunct urine lipopolysaccharide lipoarabinomannan in HIV-infected hospitalized patients reduce the utilization of healthcare resources? A post hoc analysis of the LAM multi-country randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the use of adjunctive urine lipopolysaccharide lipoarabinomannan (LAM) testing in hospitalized HIV-infected persons with suspected tuberculosis (TB) and a CD4 count <100cells/ml. However, the recommendation is conditional, and uptake by individual treatment programmes depends on perceived additional benefit. The aim of this study was to determine whether adjunctive LAM testing has additional clinical benefits including a reduction in healthcare-related use of resources. METHODS: A post hoc analysis was performed of a published multice

The effect of antenatal care on use of institutional delivery service and postnatal care in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although there are many initiatives to improve maternal health services use, utilization of health facility delivery and postnatal care services is low in Ethiopia. Current evidence at global level showed that antenatal care increases delivery and postnatal care services use. But previous studies in Ethiopia indicate contrasting results. Therefore, this meta-analysis was done to identify the effect of antenatal care on institutional delivery and postnatal care services use in Ethiopia. METHODS: Studies were searched from databases using keywords like place of birth, institutional

Client-Centeredness of Family Planning Services in a Resource Limited Setting.

BACKGROUND: Clients' needs and their satisfaction are priority issues in studying quality in reproductive health services. However, only 24-37% of Ethiopian women were informed about the available family planning methods and their utilization. High national total fertility rate (4.8) and low contraceptive prevalence rate (29%) might be attributed to these and other reasons. This study assessed the level of client-centeredness of family planning services and their determinants in public health facilities of Bahir Dar Town, Northwest Ethiopia. METHODS: Exit interviews of 326 consecutively enrol
