Perceived self-efficacy to teach comprehensive abortion care among nursing and midwifery faculty in higher learning institutions in Rwanda: A mixed method study.

INTRODUCTION: Comprehensive abortion care is an emerging intervention being integrated into nursing and midwifery curricula. Yet, no studies have been conducted in Rwanda to determine whether faculty perceive themselves as capable of teaching comprehensive abortion care. This study aims to evaluate the perceived self-efficacy to teach comprehensive abortion care among nursing and midwifery faculty in higher learning institutions in Rwanda. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The University of Rwanda College of Medicine and Health Sciences Institutional Review Board approved this study (UR-CMHS-IRB No 335/

Developing a nurse-led reproductive health mobile health unit in rural Illinois: Opportunity to promote faculty practice and student training.

Mobile health units (MHUs) in the United States have grown to over 3,000 nationwide, increasing health care access and equity to underserved communities. Although MHUs have demonstrated improved patient outcomes, there is a lack of literature on partnering with nursing colleges and their faculty. This report will share how a college of nursing and their office of faculty practice and partnerships in a large midwestern state university implemented a nurse-led MHU to deliver reproductive health care to rural communities in central Illinois, incorporating advanced practice registered nurses (APRN

New graduate nurse competencies-Part II: Thematic analysis of the perceptions of academic faculty and acute care hospital practice leaders at the time of new graduate nurse hire and upon completing a 12-month nurse residency program.

BACKGROUND: The various educational pathways to obtain an entry-level nursing degree facilitate a diverse workforce. However, they also create confusion among practice leaders about the competency-level expectations of newly graduated nurses (NGNs). Establishing a clear understanding of the essential core competencies hospital practice leaders can expect of all NGNs, regardless of the type of nursing prelicensure degree program, upon starting their professional practice, and at the end of a 12-month nurse residency program (NRP) will contribute to their ongoing growth and development. This is

Moving the needle further and faster: Policy and leadership opportunities to support early career nurse faculty and build resilience in establishing and growing their programs of research.

Nurse scientists play a critical role in advancing the nursing field and improving health, but early career faculty can enter the academic ranks with little training in how to effectively establish, manage, and grow a program of research (POR) or weather the storms that accompany a research-intensive academic path. This can lead many nurse scientists to leave academic positions or even abandon their POR altogether. This is problematic at a societal level because nurse scientists bring a unique and valuable holistic perspective to scientific inquiry and an orientation towards community-based wo

Just-in-Time DNP Book Club: An Inclusive Immersion Experience.

A just-in-time faculty-led virtual book club for a Doctor of Nursing Practice program was initiated in response to student interest. Students met virtually to discuss advanced practice nursing implications of a nonfiction book in accordance with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials. Reading a book independently may be insufficient for deep learning, but individual summary reflections following faculty-led discussions connected domains, competencies, and subcompetencies. This unplanned reactive activity connected a real-world situation to the principles of advanced nursing

Contemporary issue: Starting nurse suicide prevention during pre-licensure education.

BACKGROUND: Undergraduate nursing students are at a high risk for mental health challenges, suicidal behaviors, and risk factors. High stress levels and personal and academic pressure may lead to mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder in undergraduate nursing students. Nursing students experience barriers to mental health such as lack of support, academic burnout, and stigma. AIM: This paper presents the components for a comprehensive suicide prevention plan that nursing faculty can implement into pre-licensure nurse education. METHOD: The ac

Commitment and confidence, not expertise, are key to LGBTQ+ inclusivity in nursing education: Findings from a mixed-methods study.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of pre-licensure nursing faculty in the United States (U.S.) with LGBTQ+ inclusivity in their teaching practice. BACKGROUND: Nursing faculty must prepare students to provide equitable care for LGBTQ+ patients and populations. There is a gap in the evidence related to nursing faculty experiences with LGBTQ+ inclusivity. METHODS: This explanatory mixed-methods study consisted of a cross-sectional survey (phase I) and semi-structured interviews (phase II). Findings from phase I were used to design the interview guide and inform pu

What goes around comes around: improving faculty retention through more effective mentoring.

In the midst of a nursing faculty shortage, recruitment and retention of new faculty are of utmost importance if the country is to educate and graduate a sufficient number of nurses to fill the health care demands. The pressure of horizontal hostility combined with lack of support, guidance, and knowledge about the educational system makes the novice nurse faculty members vulnerable to burnout and early resignations. Mentorship is the single most influential way to successfully develop new nursing faculty, reaping the benefits of recruitment, retention, and long-term maturation of future nurse

Leveling the playing field for nursing students with disabilities: implications of the amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Faculty have reported a significant increase in the number of nursing students with disabilities; however, misinformation regarding legislated changes in the definition of a disability, as enacted in 2008 under the American with Disabilities Act Amendments Act, has contributed to faculty confusion when working with students with disabilities. This article identifies the circumstances under which nursing faculty are legally required to provide reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 as amended in 2008, and the strate

Accreditation: The other faculty role.

Accreditation is fundamental to nursing program quality, graduate/completer eligibility for licensure and certification, and admission to graduate study. Traditionally, faculty expectations have been organized around three pillars: teaching, scholarship, and service/practice. Although these categories remain essential, they no longer fully capture the scope of contemporary faculty responsibilities. This article proposes that accreditation activities constitute a fourth cornerstone of the faculty role, integral rather than supplementary to academic work. Nurse practitioner faculty often transit

The Massachusetts Model: A Roadmap for Advancing Serious Illness Care in Nursing Education.

The Massachusetts Nursing Task Force was established to promote the integration of primary palliative nursing competencies in nursing education across the state. A statewide survey revealed that only 23% of baccalaureate nursing programs felt their students were well-prepared in this area. Moreover, there was limited integration of evidence-based resources due to curriculum constraints, lack of faculty time, and financial limitations. To address these challenges, the Massachusetts Nursing Task Force implemented a 2-pronged approach: an End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium train-the-trainer

Faculty and Student Preparedness for Primary Palliative Care: A Comparative Study.

While it is recommended that nurses be prepared to deliver primary palliative care, these services remain inaccessible for many. Nurses, as frontline providers, should have the knowledge and skills to provide this care. The aim of this study was to determine faculty experiences in palliative and end-of-life care and how those experiences affected their perceptions of student preparedness to deliver primary palliative care and their preparedness to teach primary palliative care. A descriptive, comparative study in the Midwestern United States was conducted with faculty from 4 universities integ
