[Chastity and healing power].

The idea of a connection between chastity and healing power is to be found as well in primitive cultures as in ethnomedicine and in the medicine of Antiquity. What is meant in the Hippocratic Oath, though, is not the sexual restraint of the physician himself, but moreover in the attitude towards his patient and all the people living in the same house with the patient. This is different, though, in ethnomedicine, where the healer is demanded to live sexually abstinent for a certain time and the persons assisting him are often expected to stay untouched, i.e. chaste. "Chastity", however, as conc

No empirical social science/behavioural-oriented study exists on the deadly EVD in Nigeria. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the traditional healers' perception and attitude towards Ebola virus disease in Ibadan metropolis. STUDY DESIGN: Purposive sampling method was used to select a total of 23 traditional healers who specialized in different

Tackling Loneliness Among Patients With Borderline Personality Disorder in the Arab World: A Sociocultural Perspective.

Loneliness, a complex and multifaceted global issue, often affects individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), characterized by unstable relationships, poor self-image, and impulsive behavior. This paper explores the experience of loneliness among Arab patients with BPD, highlighting sociocultural challenges and barriers to seeking help. Cultural stigma, often tied to religious beliefs, significantly impedes mental healthcare in Arab societies. BPD is frequently misunderstood as divine punishment, leading individuals to seek faith healers instead of professional help. High expresse

I stay and I follow: clerical reflections on pastoral care for victims of sexual abuse.

In this focus group study with clerics from the Church of Sweden, the Catholic Church, and the Free Church Movement, experiences of pastoral care for victims of sexual abuse were explored. The material was analyzed using thematic analysis. The participants expressed a wish to offer the best care possible. However, insecurity, a perceived lack of psychological competences, and restrictions imposed by the vow of silence provoked self-protective strategies that may affect both clerics and confidants.

[Necrotizing osteitis of the mandibular angle with facial asymmetry due to tooth extraction--apropos of a case].

Five years after a tooth extraction, a bone necrosis of the mandibular angle happened, without consideration to the antibiotics. Such complication is rare. Living in poor socio-cultural and economic conditions, the patient tried to find help near tradipractionners, prayers groups, without any result. The treatment consisted to an extra oral incision, helping to eliminate bone sequestra, and the liquid around after a dynamic bimaxillary linkage by resin links was settled. About aetiology, only the questioning allowed to say that extraction was traumatic, putting in front of the surgical respons

Dissociation of identity following left parietal haematoma - a single case report.

OBJECTIVES: Dissociative identity disorder in relation to brain injury has only rarely been reported in literature. This case report, which illustrates a de novo onset of dissociative identity for the first time in an elderly man who had a left parietal haematoma, adds to this scant literature base and supports an integrative view of bridging the dichotomy between organic and functional to explain complex psychiatric phenomena. METHODS: It is a single case report collected through serial semi-structured interviews of the patient and his family over a 12-week period. RESULTS: The patient was

When the Love is Gone: Religious Coping Strategies for the Well-Being of Selected Catholic Women Who had Experienced Marital Infidelity in the Philippines.

Marital infidelity is widely regarded as an important concern across cultures with multidimensional effects-physical, emotional, psychological, and social. It challenges societal norms, undermines trust within families, and can have far-reaching consequences on the well-being of the betrayed spouse. This study explores how the different religious coping strategies influenced the coping and healing process caused by marital infidelity. It explores the in-depth experience of selected Catholic Filipino women whose husbands cheated. It draws inspiration from their narratives of how they faced, str

The Radiographic Union Score for Hip (RUSH) Identifies Radiographic Nonunion of Femoral Neck Fractures.

BACKGROUND: The Radiographic Union Score for Hip (RUSH) is a previously validated outcome instrument designed to improve intra- and interobserver reliability when describing the radiographic healing of femoral neck fractures. The ability to identify fractures that have not healed is important for defining nonunion in clinical trials and predicting patients who will likely require additional surgery to promote fracture healing. We sought to investigate the utility of the RUSH score to define femoral neck fracture nonunion. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What RUSH score threshold yields at least 98% s

Hoof injuries.

Major surgery for wounds of the foot, compared with other parts of the body, requires a more detailed preparation and a more persistent aftercare. To approach severe hoof wounds with a routine applicable to drainage of a subsolar abscess is doomed to failure! Yet, in dealing with referral cases of hoof wounds, particularly those that have become chronic, the author has observed that the principles have been ignored and/or the routines inadequate. The hoof has a suitable capacity to heal, with complete reformation of hoof structures, if a healing environment is maintained for a long enough peri

Utilization of Local Healing Practices Among Patients Admitted to a Remote Tertiary Care Hospital in Eastern Bhutan: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In Bhutan, patients frequently choose between allopathic health professionals and Traditional Medicine (Sowa Rigpa) practitioners based on personal faith and cultural preferences. However, beyond these formally recognized systems, uncertified local healers provide alternative cultural and spiritual healing methods that are often associated with ethical dilemmas and delayed clinical management. This study aimed to comprehensively describe the socio-demographic characteristics, clinical diagnoses, and specific types of local healing treatments received by patients admitted t

While much research emphasizes risk and pathology, less is known about how adolescents interpret these early experiences and construct resilience. OBJECTIVE: To explore how adolescents exposed to IPV in early childhood make sense of their experiences and articulate resilience through personal narratives. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Twenty-one adolescents (aged 13-18) residing in the Abha regio

Faith-based organisations in providing HIV services within low- and middle-income countries (LMICs): a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: To end the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic by 2030, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) proposes that 95% of people living with HIV should be diagnosed, 95% of those with a diagnosis should be on treatment, and 95% of those on treatment should achieve viral suppression. To attain these targets, UNAIDS estimates that community-based HIV services should increase from 5% to 30%. Within low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs), faith-based organisations (FBOs) often possess broad societal influence and extensive reach. Thus, many major AIDS organi

Where Rabies Is Not a Disease. Bridging Healthworlds to Improve Mutual Understanding and Prevention of Rabies.

Deeply embedded in local social, cultural, and religious settings, traditional healing is part of dog bite and rabies management in many rabies endemic countries. Faith healing, which usually encompasses a more holistic approach to health including physical, mental and social dimensions, is rare in the context of rabies. In Gujarat, Western India, the Hindu goddess Hadkai Mata is worshiped by low-caste communities as the Mother of Rabies in the event of a dog bite to a person or their livestock. This belief might influence people's attitudes and behaviors toward rabies prevention but has never
