Supporting unpaid carers during section 17 leave from mental health in-patient wards: carer and practitioner perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Care planning for recovery and to work towards hospital discharge is integral to good practice in mental health in-patient settings. Authorised leave from hospital, especially for those who are detained, can be used to check readiness for discharge and to maintain social connections that support a patient's recovery journey. Leave therefore often involves friends and family, or 'carers'. However, carer involvement in planning leave is limited, and carers struggle with feeling unsupported during the leave. AIMS: This study aimed to explore carers' and mental health practitioners' s

Maternal leave policies and vaccination coverage: a global analysis.

Childhood vaccination is a proven and cost-effective way to reduce childhood mortality; however, participation in vaccination programs is not universal even where programs are free or low cost. Studies in diverse countries have reported work conflicts as limiting parents' ability to vaccinate their children. Using policy data for 185 UN member countries, we explore the hypothesis that an increased opportunity for parents to bring children to vaccination sites will translate into higher childhood vaccination rates. To do so, we use OLS regression to examine the relationship between the duration

Considerations for the Future: Family Planning and Infertility During Psychiatry Training.

During medical school, residency, or fellowship, many trainees struggle to balance their careers with starting a family. Some may feel the optimal time for parenthood is after completion of training, but the effect of increasing age on fertility is a real consideration for female physicians.1 Several studies have explored the impact of pregnancy and parental leave during surgical residency, yet little has been published on these topics during psychiatry training. This is surprising as psychiatry residents often address the challenges of integrating work and parenthood with their patients, yet

[Dysfunction in the family life cycle: alcohol abuse and its consequences on the family].

This paper studies how alcohol abuse interacts during the different stages of family-life cycle thus enhancing the possibilities of dysfunctions thereof. Formation of a family, its adapting to the first-born, the upbringing of preschool, school, and teenage children are the topics under review as well as the time when children leave home, and the later-life period when the elderly couple goes through the "empty nest" feeling. Alcohol abuse and its consequences upon the different family members are screened up. Finally, family therapy relevance when dealing with the treatment of alcoholism is p

Returning to work following parental leave: the experiences of Australian anaesthetists.

With increasing gender balance in specialist medical training and employment in Australia, there is a corresponding need to consider how parental leave and subsequent return to work is managed in the workplace. An electronic survey exploring the experiences of pregnancy and return to work following parental leave was distributed by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA). The return-to-work component of the survey evaluated parental leave and return-to-work patterns, lactation practices and facilities, supports and resources utilised during the return-to-work process. The Importance of Parental Leave and Lactation Support for Surgeons.

Despite the growing population of surgeons who will spend the bulk of their potential childbearing years in medical school, training, or early in practice, the stigma associated with pregnancy remains. The challenges of childbearing for surgeons also extend to the pregnancy experience from a health perspective including increased rates of infertility, miscarriage, and preterm labor. Given the unique demands of a surgical practice, surgeons may experience pressure to minimize the disruption of their work during and after pregnancy. This may include attempts at carrying a full workload until the

Job Decisions to Leave a Hospitalist Group Among Millennial Hospitalists Born in or After 1982: A Survey Based Study.

High turnover among millennial hospitalists, who constitute a large proportion of early-career physicians, remains a concern. Using purposeful sampling, we surveyed 136 millennial hospitalists to understand what factors influence their decisions to leave a hospital medicine group. Family reasons (81%) and geographical location (80%) were the factors most commonly identified as important influences on decisions to leave. While these factors may be non-modifiable to a large extent, these findings underscore the importance of identifying such needs at the time of recruitment. Institutional reputa

Linear scleroderma: a Neuman nursing perspective.

Although quite a rare pediatric disease, linear scleroderma (LS), a chronic disease, may leave scarring and may have devastating effects on a child and family. This article provides an overview of the disease, presents a case history of a boy with LS, and discusses how nurses and other health-team members assisted the child and family in managing the illness. The description of the nursing care is based on the Neuman systems model and on the nursing diagnoses of fear, disturbed self-concept, and impaired physical mobility.

Children's responses to family member homicide.

Homicide is a significant behavioral deviation resulting in a sudden and unexpected loss of life and can leave children in the chaotic wake. Interviews conducted with 13 children ages 9 to 11 years during the initial 1 to 3 months after a family homicide provided insight into themes of bereavement. A major finding in the study was that the witnessing or hearing the news of a family member homicide was a powerful associative factor for childhood posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and for complicated bereavement.

Fertile Ground in the OR: Rewriting the Narrative on Family in Plastic Surgery Training.

This editorial discusses the possibility of family life and plastic surgery residency successfully coexisting when training programs intentionally foster supportive cultures, flexible policies, and equitable parental leave. Drawing on personal experiences from a highly family-friendly program, together with emerging literature on pregnancy, parenthood, childcare, and career advancement in surgery, we challenge the notion that residents must choose between surgical excellence and family life. Some practical strategies, including shared workload, flexible scheduling, lactation support, peer ment

A new multigene family inducible by tobacco mosaic virus or salicylic acid in tobacco.

A previously undescribed cDNA family was isolated from tobacco challenged with tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). A cDNA library was constructed with mRNA from upper leaves of Xanthi nc tobacco plants that had been inoculated with TMV on the lower leaves 11 days previously. The library was screened differentially with radiolabeled cDNA synthesized with mRNA from upper, uninoculated leaves of either TMV-inoculated or mock-inoculated tobacco plants. The new cDNA family, designated SAR8.2, had at least five expressed members, one or more of which were inducible by TMV inoculation and by salicylic acid t
