Nurse practitioner role in preparing families for pediatric outpatient surgery.

Due to medical advances in surgery and anesthesia and cost of hospital stays, more elective pediatric surgical procedures are being performed in outpatient settings. One proposed advantage of outpatient surgery is decreased anxiety or a shorter period of anxiety for pediatric patients and their families because they are able to go home shortly after the surgery. A literature review was conducted to describe anxiety experienced by pediatric patients and their families in the outpatient surgery setting and to explore ways to decrease that anxiety. Both children and parents reported not feeling e

A Qualitative Inquiry into Nurse-Family Partnership Black Client Perspectives.

Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) is a home visiting program designed to improve pregnancy outcomes, child health and development, and life course outcomes for families facing socioeconomic inequalities through support and education provided by nurses to first-time mothers during pregnancy and up to 2 years postpartum. Studies show that home visiting programs like NFP have positive outcomes, but attrition remains a concern which may impact the desired health equity goals. Black mothers are more likely to withdraw from the NFP program, and research is lacking regarding their experiences in home vi

Educational preparation for maternal, child and family health nurses in Australia.

AIM: The study aims to map and critique the current postgraduate educational nursing programmes offered to nurses and midwives in maternal, child and family health in Australia. BACKGROUND: Nursing specialties that focus on the early years of child health and development are based on international recognition of the developmental needs of the growing infant and of the social, health and economic consequences of failing to support families to raise their children in optimal environments. Little is known whether the educational programmes that prepare maternal, child and family health nurses (M

Registered Nurses working together with family members of older people.

AIM: The aim of the study was to reach a more profound understanding, through looking at nurses' working situation, of those factors that influence how nurses are able to work together with family members of older people living in nursing homes or similar facilities. Comparison of nurse practitioner and family physician relative work values.

PURPOSE: With the enactment of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997, American nurse practitioners were granted direct Medicare reimbursement for Part B services. Payment structures in fee-for-service and managed care systems are physician-based, leading to difficulties in constructing payments for other health care professionals. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the feasibility of using nurse practitioner data for specifying relative work values in the Medicare Fee Schedule for three office-visit codes. DESIGN: An exploratory survey was designed to establish relative work values usin

Narratives by district nurses about elder abuse within families.

Twenty-one district nurses (DNs) narrated 44 cases of elder abuse within families. A phenomenological-hermeneutical analysis revealed that the experiences were complex and often included families providing care for an elderly person. The abuse seemed to be related to the inability of one party to meet the care demands required by the elderly, by him- or herself, or by the situation. It also seemed to be related to an inhibiting dependency between the parties, a negative execution of power over the weaker party, and a history of violence. When the experiences were considered within the perspect

Serving the needs of donor families: the role of the critical care nurse.

The humanitarian act of donating organs has tremendous benefits not only for the transplant recipients but also for the family of the donor. The opportunity to provide some hope to a grief-stricken family that something positive can result from their tragedy is an important contribution that a critical care nurse can make. The nurse's participation in recognizing the possibility of organ donation for the family of a terminal patient can drastically reduce the national shortage of transplantable organs. The consent and organ recovery process is a complex one, and a team approach by the nurse, p

Physical abuse of older adults in nursing homes: a random sample survey of adults with an elderly family member in a nursing home.

Few empirical studies have focused on elder abuse in nursing home settings. The present study investigated the prevalence and risk factors of staff physical abuse among elderly individuals receiving nursing home care in Michigan. A random sample of 452 adults with elderly relatives, older than 65 years, and in nursing home care completed a telephone survey regarding elder abuse and neglect experienced by this elder family member in the care setting. Some 24.3% of respondents reported at least one incident of physical abuse by nursing home staff. A logistic regression model was used to estimate

Ending Abusive Patient- and Family-Initiated Relationships in Alberta Nursing Practice: The Case for a Nurse-Specific Regulatory Standard.

Background/Objectives: Patient- and family-initiated abuse of nurses is widely recognized as workplace violence, but it also raises a distinct professional-regulatory question: when may a nurse end or restrict an established therapeutic relationship without creating an allegation of abandonment or discriminatory denial of care? This perspective focuses on Alberta and examines whether the province's nursing regulator provides a comprehensive, nurse-specific, all-registrant standard comparable in clarity to Alberta's physician standard. The concern is not the absence of every form of protection

The Experience of Family Visits in the ICU: A Dual-Perspective Qualitative Study of Nurses and Family Members of Comatose Patients.

BACKGROUND: The intensive care unit (ICU) is a crucial place for treating patients in a coma. Visiting activities in this area are often restricted by strict infection control and safety regulations. In the study institution, visiting is limited to a fixed 30-min period each day, which is a relatively strict policy internationally. AIM: From the perspectives of both nurses and family members, this study explores the actual experiences of both parties during the limited visiting time, identifies the multiple challenges they face, and provides a basis for optimizing the humanized visiting strat

Palliative Care in Nursing Home Residents with Young-Onset Dementia: Professional and Family Caregiver Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: The evidence underpinning palliative care in dementia is mostly based on research in older populations. Little is known about the palliative care needs of people with young-onset dementia (YOD). OBJECTIVE: To describe palliative care practices including advance care planning (ACP) in people with YOD residing in Dutch nursing homes. METHODS: The study presents baseline questionnaire data from an observational cohort study. Physicians, family caregivers, and nursing staff completed questionnaires about 185 residents with YOD. The questionnaires included items on sociodemographics,

Artificial Intelligence in Family Nursing: An Evidence-Informed Policy Framework for Safe and Equitable Integration.

AIM: To propose an evidence-informed nursing policy framework for the safe, equitable and human-centred integration of artificial intelligence into family nursing. BACKGROUND: Ageing populations, chronic illness and the shift towards home- and community-based care have increased reliance on families and family nursing. Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in healthcare for prediction, decision support, communication, remote monitoring and documentation. However, its implications for family nursing remain underexamined because family nursing involves relationships, shared decision-maki

Learning about the genetic risk in my family: Preferences of Italian nurses.

This study explores Italian nurses' preferences and views regarding the disclosure and sharing of genetic risk information within families, focusing on their genetic literacy and responsibility, and comparing these perspectives with laypeople. A nested cross-sectional online survey, originally designed for the general population, included three hypothetical scenarios of inherited genetic risk (Cystic Fibrosis, Hereditary Cancer Syndromes, and early-onset Alzheimer's disease) and items assessing genetic literacy (awareness), family cohesion, disclosure preferences, and responsibility.
