An Autochthonous Human Case of Fasciolopsiasis in Nepal.

Fasciolopsiasis is rarely known as the parasitic disease in Nepal. Herein, we report a case of fasciolopsiasis in a 22-year-old man who was admitted in the hospital with abdominal pain, distension and loss of appetite for a month. He had previously diagnosed with acute viral hepatitis but, his abdominal pain was not resolving despite improvement in his liver function and general condition. During endoscopy an adult digenean worm was seen in the first part of the duodenum. After isolation, the worm was identified morphologically as Fasciolopsis buski. Microscogic examination of the patient's st

Genetic homogeneity of Fascioloides magna in Austria.

The large American liver fluke, Fascioloides magna, is an economically relevant parasite of both domestic and wild ungulates. F. magna was repeatedly introduced into Europe, for the first time already in the 19th century. In Austria, a stable population of F. magna has established in the Danube floodplain forests southeast of Vienna. The aim of this study was to determine the genetic diversity of F. magna in Austria. A total of 26 individuals from various regions within the known area of distribution were investigated for their cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and nicotinamide dehydrogenase

DIAGNOSIS AND THERAPY OF LIVER FLUKE (FASCIOLOIDES MAGNA) INFECTION IN FALLOW DEER (DAMA DAMA) IN SERBIA.

Giant liver fluke ( Fascioloides magna ) infection is an important health problem of cervids in southeastern Europe. We measured the prevalence and intensity of infection with F. magna in a fenced area near the Danube River in the South Bačka District of Serbia. Parasitologic, pathomorphologic, and histopathologic examinations were conducted from November 2007 to February 2008, beginning with a population of 127 adult fallow deer ( Dama dama ). After a positive diagnosis, therapy with triclabendazole-medicated corn was applied. Deer were treated at four baiting stations, using medicated feed p

Better Alone or in Ill Company? The Effect of Migration and Inter-Species Comingling on Fascioloides magna Infection in Elk.

Migratory movements and alteration of host communities through livestock production are examples of ecological processes that may have consequences on wildlife pathogens. We studied the effect of co-grazing of cattle and wild elk, and of elk migratory behaviour on the occurrence of the giant liver fluke, Fascioloides magna, in elk. Migratory elk and elk herds with a higher proportion of migratory individuals were significantly less likely to be infected with F. magna. This may indicate a decreased risk of infection for migratory individuals, known as the "migratory escape" hypothesis. Elk herd

Fasciolopslasis--a re-emerging infection in Azamgarh (Uttar Pradesh).

Fasciolopsiasis is endemic in the far east. In India, there have been a few reports of the infection, prior to the 1990's. We report two cases from Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh. Both the cases were from nearby villages where water chestnuts are cultivated. These may be a source of infection. Pigs are commonly observed in these areas and and may be the source of ova. The only missing link is the finding of infected snails. Presence of at least three cases (one reported earlier) in the area indicates the potential for the infection to re-emerge. Further epidemiological studies are needed t

Field trial on the treatment of fasciolopsiasis with praziquantel.

Eight-five of 816 (10.7%) students attending a primary school in Central Thailand were examined and found infected with Fasciolopsis buski. All of students ate fresh water lily stems and most ate other fresh water plants including caltrop, water cress and morning glory. The 85 students were given praziquantel in randomized single doses of 15, 25 or 40 mg/kg body weight. Side effects were mild and transient and consisted of headache, dizziness, nausea, sleepiness, abdominal discomfort, anorexia, diarrhea, epigastric pain, vomiting and lassitude. Those receiving the highest dosages had more side

Parasite-Mediated Competition Limits Dominant Cervid Competitor.

Species interactions structure ecological communities through direct and indirect pathways with ecosystem-wide implications. Despite mounting interest in the importance of indirect interactions, empirical evidence remains limited. Here, we demonstrate the critical role of parasite-mediated competition in driving community outcomes in a multi-species system of conservation and management concern. We leveraged 2 years of detection/non-detection data of moose (Alces alces) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and parasite loads in faecal samples within a hierarchical abundance-mediated

FATAL FASCIOLOIDES MAGNA IN A LESSER SPOT-NOSED GUENON (CERCOPITHECUS PETAURISTA).

A 4-yr-old male intact lesser spot-nosed guenon (Cercopithecus petaurista), housed at a North American zoological facility, presented with acute lethargy, inappetence, and mild neurologic signs. Physical examination revealed hemorrhagic pleural effusion in the right hemithorax. This guenon's condition improved over several days but then deteriorated, and the guenon presented with lethargy and weakness. A hemorrhagic pleural effusion was identified within the left hemithorax. The guenon developed respiratory and cardiac arrest while anesthetized. Gross examination revealed tract formation in th

Evaluation of factors affecting the efficacy of treatment against Fascioloides magna in wild red deer population.

Deer fascioloidosis is a serious and potentially fatal disease caused by the non-native trematode Fascioloides magna. Infections of red deer with F. magna in Croatia have been reported for the first time in 2000 in the Baranja region. Subsequently, the disease spread throughout the Eastern parts of the country, involving all 3 deer species (red, roe, and fallow) and mouflons. Within the disease control programme (DCP), livers from all shot deer were thoroughly analysed and all detected trematodes and gross lesions were counted and categorized. Prevalence of positive animals, in this study for

Multi level ecological fitting: indirect life cycles are not a barrier to host switching and invasion.

Many invasive species are able to escape from coevolved enemies and thus enjoy a competitive advantage over native species. However, during the invasion phase, non-native species must overcome many ecological and/or physiological hurdles before they become established and spread in their new habitats. This may explain why most introduced species either fail to establish or remain as rare interstitials in their new ranges. Studies focusing on invasive species have been based on plants or animals where establishment requires the possession of preadapted traits from their native ranges that enabl

Molecular identification of Fascioloides magna (Bassi, 1875) from red deer from South-Western Poland (Lower Silesian wilderness) on the basis of internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2).

The study was conducted in 2012-2013 on 75 fecal samples of red deer from the Lower Silesian Wilderness which were examined to determine the prevalence of Fascioloides magna in the game population. Finding liver fluke eggs in a single sample which were larger in size than Fasciola hepatica eggs indicated that further molecular analysis was necessarily. The partial sequence (116 bp long) of ITS-2 of the investigated eggs was identical to the sequences of F. magna from red deer (Cervus elaphus) (GenBank, EF534993; GenBank, EF534992) and from wapiti deer (Cervus elaphus canadensis) (GenBank, EF53

Fasciolopsis buski infection of the biliary tract: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Fasciolopsis buski is a large fluke that parasitises the human small intestine, with its infection in the biliary tract being even rarer. Given its relatively rare occurrence in recent years, the clinical diagnosis of F. buski infections can pose certain challenges. CASE DEMONSTRATION: A 59-year-old male patient with a history of consuming raw pig blood was admitted with recurrent upper abdominal pain for over 10 years. Hepatobiliary and pancreatic magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography showed stenosis of the lower end of the common bile duct, dilatation of the intrahepatic a

Gross and histologic description of trematodosis in fetal and neonatal beef calves in North Dakota and Minnesota.

Hepatic trematodes, such as Fasciola hepatica and Fascioloides magna, have variable distribution throughout the United States. F. magna is endemic in the upper midwestern United States, and F. magna infections are diagnosed frequently in weaned calves and adult beef cattle at the North Dakota State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (NDSU-VDL). Rarely, liver fluke infestation has also been observed in much younger calves, including aborted fetuses. We describe here, in 2 fetal and 7 neonatal beef calves submitted to the NDSU-VDL between 2011 and 2020, parasitic migration tracts in liv

Occurrence of the giant liver fluke, Fascioloides magna, in sympatric wild ungulates in one area in the Upper Palatinate Forest (northeastern Bavaria, Germany).

Associated with the spreading in (north)western direction of Fascioloides magna from its historic endemic area in Bohemia with its cervid hosts, unusual noticeable hepatic lesions (black-colored tissue, hemorrhage) were observed in deer harvested in hunting grounds and one deer farm located in the Upper Palatinate Forest close to the border to the Czech Republic, initially in the years of 2007 and 2009, respectively. Confirmation of the suspected diagnosis of F. magna infection in October 2011 prompted investigations on the occurrence of "fascioloidosis" among wild ungulates in that locality.

Fasciolopsiasis presenting as intestinal perforation: a case report.

Infestation by the zoonotic trematode Fasciolopsis buski (fasciolopsiasis) is seen in several parts of South-East Asia. Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, mucosal ulceration, intestinal obstruction, anasarca, and even fatality are described following heavy infestation. We present here the case of a 10-year-old boy from the Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh, India with heavy infestation by Fasciolopsis buski causing intestinal perforation. Fasciolopsiasis is by no means rare but its presentation as a case of intestinal perforation is extraordinary.

Population structure and dispersal routes of an invasive parasite, Fascioloides magna, in North America and Europe.

BACKGROUND: Fascioloides magna (Trematoda: Fasciolidae) is an important liver parasite of a wide range of free-living and domestic ruminants; it represents a remarkable species due to its large spatial distribution, invasive character, and potential to colonize new territories. The present study provides patterns of population genetic structure and admixture in F. magna across all enzootic regions in North America and natural foci in Europe, and infers migratory routes of the parasite on both continents. METHODS: In total, 432 individuals from five North American enzootic regions and three Eu

Prevalence and intensity of infections in the lymnaeid snail Omphiscola glabra experimentally infected with Fasciola hepatica, Fascioloides magna and Paramphistomum daubneyi.

Single and double infections of juvenile Omphiscola glabra (Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae) with Paramphistomum daubneyi and/or Fasciola hepatica were carried out to determine the redial burden and cercarial production in snails dissected at day 60 or at day 75 post-exposure (p.e.) in the laboratory at 20 degrees C. The results were compared with those obtained with single-miracidium infections by Fascioloides magna. Compared to F. hepatica, low values were noted at day 75 p.e. for the prevalence of snail infections with P. daubneyi (4.6-8.3% instead of 23.6-25.9%), the total number of free rediae (10
