Surfactant and antibiotic co-occurrence reshaped the acidogenic process for volatile fatty acids production during sludge anaerobic fermentation.

The overuse of surfactants and antibiotics has led to their high concentration in waste activated sludge (WAS), and these exogenous pollutants have been shown to pose various influences on the subsequent anaerobic treatment process. Previous works have primarily concerned the impacts of individual pollutants on WAS anaerobic fermentation process. This work revealed the synergetic effects of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) and sulfadiazine (SDZ) co-occurrence in WAS on the biosynthesis of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). The addition of SDBS in the SDZ reactor significantly increased VFAs g

Sampling procedure for the measurement of dissolved hydrogen and volatile fatty acids in the rumen of dairy cows.

Dissolved hydrogen (dH) influences the pathways of VFA production and is a precursor of methane formation in the rumen. Measurements of dH in rumen fluid taken at the same time as measuring other rumen fermentation end products would improve our quantitative understanding of the role of dH as a controller of rumen fermentation. Sample collections though a rumen cannula and using oral stomach tubing were compared for measurements of dissolved gases and fermentation end products in the rumen fluid of 4 ruminally cannulated dairy cows fed a total mixed ration of corn silage and concentrate. Rumen

Effect of level of input of different proportions of volatile fatty acids on energy utilization in growing ruminants.

Four steers were maintained wholly by intragastric infusion of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and protein, together with a mineral-vitamin supplement. The infusion was given at three levels of energy, namely 450, 675 and 900 kJ/kg live weight0.75, calculated to supply energy at 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 times that required for maintenance. The VFA provided 0.837 and the protein 0.163 of the energy infused. The molar proportions of individual VFA were varied so that the infusate contained 0.36-0.91 of acetic acid, 0.56-0.01 of propionic acid and a constant 0.08 of butyric acid. Heat production was measured i

[Distribution of volatile fatty acids in digestive tract contents of rabbit. II.--Rabbits subjected to fasting (author's transl)].

Volatile fatty acids (VFA) were measured by gas chromatography in the digestive material of Rabbits subjected to:--alimentary fast for 48 hours;--stercoral fast for 96 hours. A 48 hour alimentary fast caused a substantial drop in VFA in the digestive tract, butyric acid was the most affected, its concentration falling below that of propionate. Fasting for 48 hours did not cause a total cessation of fermentation. Stercoral fasting did not diminish the quantity of VFA in the digestive tract. VFA production was even augmented in the posterior parts (caecum and colon).

Reformulation of Tunisian Sun-Dried Merguez with Camel Meat: Characterization of Physicochemical and Compositional Changes in Organic Acids, Fatty Acids, Volatile Compounds, and Minerals.

Traditional sun-dried merguez is an authentic Tunisian dried sausage made with a large number of spices and herbs, which was reformulated in this study with camel meat and hump fat and dried as in the artisanal process. This research studied the physicochemical, microbiological, and chemical compositional changes that occurred in fresh camel merguez (FCM) after 12 days of drying to achieve traditional dried camel merguez (DCM). The results showed significant weight loss (54.1%), as well as significant decreases in pH (5.20-4.97), moisture (60.5-12.3%), and water activity (0.986-0.673). These r

Volatile fatty acids from food waste as external carbon Sources: Denitrification Efficiency, microbial Pathways, and Techno-Economic assessment.

Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) derived from the anaerobic digestion of food waste were systematically evaluated as an alternative external carbon source for wastewater denitrification. An optimized segmented dosing strategy significantly enhanced VFA denitrification performance, achieved an 89.16 % total nitrogen removal rate, demonstrated superior carbon utilization and minimized nitrite accumulation. Kinetic analysis revealed a denitrification rate of 7.36 mg N/(g VSS·h) and potential of 0.22 g N/g COD for the VFA system, both of which surpassed those of the methanol and glucose systems. Microb

Evaluating enhanced sulfate reduction and optimized volatile fatty acids (VFA) composition in anaerobic reactor by Fe (III) addition.

Anaerobic reactors with ferric iron addition have been experimentally demonstrated to be able to simultaneously improve sulfate reduction and organic matter degradation during sulfate-containing wastewater treatment. In this work, a mathematical model is developed to evaluate the impact of ferric iron addition on sulfate reduction and organic carbon removal as well as the volatile fatty acids (VFA) composition in anaerobic reactor. The model is successfully calibrated and validated using independent long-term experimental data sets from the anaerobic reactor with Fe (III) addition under differ

Disruption of Fatty Acid Desaturase Gene Alters Aphid Resistance and Volatile Emissions in Sorghum.

Jasmonic acid (JA)-deficient msd3 sorghum mutants exhibit contrasting resistance phenotypes against sugarcane aphids (SCA; Melanaphis sacchari), which promotes aphid settling at early time points while providing antibiosis-mediated resistance at later stages. Here we investigated the physiological, hormonal, and metabolic mechanisms underlying msd3-mediated resistance to SCA. Contrary to the widely reported growth-defence trade-off, msd3 plants maintained biomass comparable to uninfested controls, while wild-type (WT) plants showed significant reduction in biomass following SCA feeding. Effect of different sweeteners on the quality, fatty acid and volatile flavor compounds of braised pork.

This study aimed to assess how several sweeteners (white sugar, Siraitia grosvenorii fruit, mogrosides, and stevia glycoside) affected the flavor, fatty acid composition, and quality of braised pork. The findings indicated that braised meat prepared with sweeteners differed from typical braised pork. When simmered for 60 min, the typical braised pork with white granulated sugar exhibited a significant cooking loss (CL) and little water content. Significantly more than in the group containing Siraitia grosvenorii, mogroside, and stevia glycoside, the Thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) value increased

[Effect of volatile fatty acid concentration in the rumen on blood flow in the mesenteric vessels of sheep].

The studies were performed on sheep with chronic rumen fistulae and implanted electromagnetic recorders of blood flow in the anterior mesenteric vein and the anterior mesenteric artery. The animals were fed the diet consisting of sugar beet, urea and mineral salts (diet I) or sugar beet and mineral salts (diet II--nitrogen deficient). The diet caused an increase of blood flow in the mesenteric artery and the mesenteric vein: this increase reached the highest level after 2 hours since the application of the diet. There was noted a positive correlation between the changes of blood flow in the me

Normal abomasal electromyography and emptying in sheep and the effects of intraabomasal volatile fatty acid infusion.

Electromyographic activity and emptying of the abomasum were studied in 3 sheep. Pacesetter potentials (PP), with a frequency of 6.06 +/- 0.05 (X +/- SEM) cycles/minute and propagated distally with an increased conduction velocity approaching the pylorus, were recorded from the distal 11 cm of the antrum. Spike burst and fused action potentials (AP) were superimposed on a variable percentage of PP. The aborad propagation of both types of AP was associated with abomasal emptying at the net rate of 12.61 +/- 1.38 (X +/- SEM) ml/minute. Intraabomasal infusion of 50 ml of a 300 mM solution of eith

Microbial production of single cell oil from biowaste-derived volatile fatty acids using a newly identified oleaginous Cyberlindnera jadinii.

Efforts to achieve a circular economy emphasize waste minimization while maximizing its value through recycling and reuse. Volatile Fatty Acids (VFAs), derived from organic waste streams, hold biotechnological potential as raw materials for producing value-added compounds offering sustainable alternatives to traditional petroleum-based approaches. The phenotypic and genomic plasticity of non-Saccharomyces yeasts positions them as ideal candidates for VFAs metabolization. In this study, the growth profiles of 48 yeasts were assessed using seven VFAs as sole carbon sources, as representative of

Simultaneous enhancing phosphorus recovery and volatile fatty acids production during anaerobic fermentation of sewage sludge with peroxydisulfate pre-oxidation.

Phosphorus release and sludge hydrolysis are the keys for phosphorus and carbon recovery from sewage sludge via anaerobic process. In this study, iron-rich sludge (a common phosphorus-rich sewage sludge) was pre-oxidized by heat-activated peroxydisulfate (PDS) to enhance volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production and iron-bound phosphorus (Fe-P) release during anaerobic fermentation (AF). With low-dosage PDS pre-oxidation (33.75 mg/g total solids), the concentration of recoverable phosphorus increased by 49.3% than that noted in control along with enhanced VFAs production after 4 days. This is mai

Influence of biological pretreatment of coconut husk lignocellulosic biomass for biogas production on archaeal community and volatile fatty acids.

Lignocellulosic agricultural residues such as coconut husk are abundant but recalcitrant substrates that limit efficient biogas production during anaerobic digestion. We evaluated the effect of biological pretreatment of coconut husk on archaea, volatile fatty acid (VFA) profiles, and biogas production during anaerobic digestion. Coconut husk was pretreated for 50 days using a consortium of cellulolytic bacteria isolated from poultry feces and subsequently digested alongside untreated husk (control) in batch reactors. Cellulose-degrading bacteria were presumptively characterized based on morph
