Obstructive Uropathy Caused by Massive Fecal Impaction in a Patient With Congenital Anorectal Malformation and Neurogenic Bladder.

Anorectal malformations (ARMs) comprise a broad spectrum of congenital anomalies involving both anorectal and urogenital tracts. After diagnosis, urological problems should be evaluated in addition to surgical correction of ARMs. Commonly encountered urological problems in patients with ARMs are recurrent urinary tract infections, vesicoureteral reflux, and chronic kidney disease. Therefore, the proper timing of urination and appropriate defecation habits are essential for preserving renal function in patients with ARMs. Here, we report a case of acute hydronephrosis by severe stool impaction

Stercoral Ulcer-related Lower Rectal Perforation Associated with Persistent Rectal Fecal Impaction: Three Case Reports and Clinical Implications.

Stercoral ulcer-related lower rectal perforation is an uncommon but potentially under-recognized condition. We report three cases of elderly women with localized lower rectal perforation associated with persistent rectal fecal impaction. All patients presented with hematochezia without generalized peritonitis despite the continued passage of loose or muddy stools. Serial computed tomography revealed persistent fecal impaction in the lower rectum during the clinical course. Continued bowel movement does not necessarily indicate effective rectal evacuation. Recognition of persistent rectal fecal

Transabdominal Ultrasound Measured Rectal Diameter for Identifying Fecal Impaction in Children With Functional Constipation: A Diagnostic Accuracy Study.

Background Functional constipation (FC) is a common pediatric disorder, with fecal impaction posing significant diagnostic challenges. Digital rectal examination (DRE), to identify fecal mass in the rectum, is invasive and often distressing. Transabdominal ultrasound (TAUS) offers a promising, non-invasive alternative by measuring transverse rectal diameter (RD). This study was conducted to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound-measured RD in detecting fecal impaction among children with FC, using DRE as the reference standard. Methods In this diagnostic accuracy study conducted over

Scoring system to evaluate meaningful fecal impaction in patients with lower urinary tract dysfunction with simple radiography (KUB).

PURPOSE: The management of bowel bladder disorder (BBD) has only been indicated for subjective constipation without objective evidence. We attempted to highlight the radiological findings in patients with BBD and construct a scoring system to identify patients with BBD prior to treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-five patients with lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) received polyethylene glycol for 2 months before bladder medication for LUTD. Based on partial response to LUTD following treatment, we divided the patients into LUTD-fecal impaction (FI) and LUTD not attributed to FI (LUT

Rare case of fecal impaction caused by a fecalith originating in a large colonic diverticulum: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Fecal impaction is defined as a large mass of compacted feces in the colon and has the potential to induce a serious medical condition in elderly individuals. Fecal impaction is generally preventable, and early recognition of the typical radiological findings is important for making an early diagnosis. The factors that lead to fecal impaction are usually similar to those causing constipation. Few cases with fecal impaction associated with a diverticulum have been reported. CASE SUMMARY: We present the case of a 62-year-old woman who suffered from abdominal pain and vomiting, had a

Use of polyethylene glycolelectrolyte solution (GoLYTELY) for management of acute fecal impaction and chronic constipation in a cat.

A 13-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was presented to the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine (Madison, Wisconsin, USA) because of severe, persistent fecal impaction following cholecystoduodenoplasty performed 4 d earlier. The impaction did not resolve with common medical management, prompting initiation of polyethylene glycol-electrolyte solution (PEG-ES, GoLYTELY; Braintree Laboratories) via esophageal feeding tube. The cat showed rapid improvement, and PEG-ES was discontinued following resolution of the impaction. However, 23 d later, the cat was re-p

Fecal microbiota impacts development of Cryptosporidium parvum in the mouse.

The dependence of Cryptosporidium parasites on host cell metabolites suggests that the development of nutritional interventions to limit parasite proliferation should be feasible. Based on this concept, we are testing dietary interventions to affect the enterocytes' metabolism in a manner that limits intracellular multiplication of the parasite. We hypothesize that changes in the metabolic pathways encoded by the gastro-intestinal tract microbiota may restrict parasite proliferation. To identify taxonomic and metabolic features of the microbiota associated with severity of cryptosporidiosis, a

Impact of Amoxicillin-Clavulanate followed by Autologous Fecal Microbiota Transplantation on Fecal Microbiome Structure and Metabolic Potential.

Strategies to prevent multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) infections are scarce, but autologous fecal microbiota transplantation (autoFMT) may limit gastrointestinal MDRO expansion. AutoFMT involves banking one's feces during a healthy state for later use in restoring gut microbiota following perturbation. This pilot study evaluated the effect of autoFMT on gastrointestinal microbiome taxonomic composition, resistance gene content, and metabolic capacity after exposure to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (Amox-Clav). Ten healthy participants were enrolled. All received 5 days of Amox-Clav. Half wer

Stability of oral and fecal microbiome at room temperature: impact on diversity.

INTRODUCTION: When collecting oral and fecal samples for large epidemiological microbiome studies, optimal storage conditions such as immediate freezing are not always feasible. It is essential to study the impact of temporary room temperature (RT) storage on microbiome diversity. METHODS: We conducted a pilot study to validate a sampling protocol based on the viability of 16S rRNA gene sequencing in microbiome samples. Fecal and oral samples from five participants were collected and preserved under different conditions: a) 70% ethanol; b) FIT tube for stool; and c) chlorhexidine solution for

Impact of fecal incontinence and its treatment on quality of life in women.

Fecal incontinence (FI) is a physically and psychosocially debilitating disorder which negatively impacts quality of life (QOL). It bears a significant burden not only on patients but also on their families, caretakers as well as society as a whole. Even though it is considered a somewhat common condition, especially as women age, the prevalence is often underestimated due to patients' reluctance to report symptoms or seek care. The evaluation and treatment of FI can be also hindered by lack of understanding of the current management options among healthcare providers and how they impact on QO

Impact of social determinants of health on fecal incontinence treatment in older women.

BACKGROUND: Many women with fecal incontinence do not seek care despite the availability of effective treatments. Factors influencing care-seeking for fecal incontinence are not well elucidated, and the role of social determinants of health in fecal incontinence treatment utilization is unknown. OBJECTIVE: Our primary aim was to determine the association between social determinants of health and treatment utilization among Medicare beneficiaries with fecal incontinence. We secondarily aimed to determine the baseline treatment utilization rate and to determine factors associated with fecal inc

Impact of ceftiofur administration and Escherichia coli inoculation on the calf fecal microbiome.

The cattle gastrointestinal tract harbors a diverse community of microorganisms, including pathogenic and commensal strains of Escherichia coli. Antimicrobial use in cattle can disrupt the gut microbiome, leading to shifts in bacterial diversity and abundance. Here, we combined shotgun metagenomics and single-cell sequencing to assess how ceftiofur antibiotic treatment impacted microbial diversity and structure. At the start of the experiment, ceftiofur was administered intramuscularly in parallel with the inoculation of a cocktail of extended-beta-lactamase-producing E. coli strains to simula
