OBJECTIVE: Raoultella planticola is an emerging opportunistic pathogen closely related to members of the Klebsiella genus. Genomic characterization of R. planticola isolates recovered from food animals is lacking. Here we describe the antimicrobial resistance genes, virulence factors, plasmid replicons, and phylogeny of three antimicrobial-resistant R. planticola isolates recovered from the feces of three dairy calves within 48 hours of birth.
METHODS: The genomes of the three R. planticola isolates were sequenced on a NextSeq 2000 platform using paired-end sequencing. The raw reads were trim

We describe bilateral Encephalitozoon hellem keratoconjunctivitis in a 39-year-old immunocompetent woman with two years of daily close contact with a pet parrot. She presented with a three-week history of bilateral ocular redness, itching, foreign-body sensation, and blurred vision that had not improved with topical fluorometholone, lubricants, and levofloxacin prescribed for presumed dry eye disease. Slit-lamp examination showed bilateral conjunctival inflammation and diffuse superficial punctate corneal infiltrates. Giemsa staining of a left-eye corneal scraping demonstrated oval spore-like

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a highly contagious, fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by infectious prions (PrPCWD) affecting wild and captive cervids. Although experimental feeding studies have demonstrated prions in feces of crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos), coyotes (Canis latrans), and cougars (Puma concolor), the role of scavengers and predators in CWD epidemiology remains poorly understood. Here we applied the real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC) assay to detect PrPCWD in feces from cervid consumers, to advance surveillance approaches, which could be used to improve disease

BACKGROUND: Post-weaning diarrhea (PWD) is a frequently occurring health and welfare issue in weaned piglets. Behavioral changes indicating impaired health may be detectable before the onset of signs and could be useful to detect the development of PWD early, enabling targeted and timely interventions. Current algorithms enable automated behavioral classification on the group level, while PWD may not affect all piglets in one pen and individual level analysis may be required. Therefore, this study aimed to assess whether changes in pen activity or individual piglet behavior can be early indica

BACKGROUND: Most human microbiota studies focus on bacteria inhabiting body surfaces, but these surfaces also are home to large populations of viruses. Many are bacteriophages, and their role in driving bacterial diversity is difficult to decipher without the use of in vitro ecosystems that can reproduce human microbial communities.
RESULTS: We used chemostat culture systems known to harbor diverse fecal bacteria to decipher whether these cultures also are home to phage communities. We found that there are vast viral communities inhabiting these ecosystems, with estimated concentrations simil

A selective medium, Clostridium botulinum isolation (CBI) agar, was developed for the isolation of C. botulinum from human feces. This medium contains cycloserine (250 microgram/ml), sulfamethoxazole (76 microgram/ml), and trimethoprim (4 microgram/ml) as selective inhibitory agents. Qualitative tests indicated complete recovery of C. botulinum types A, B, F, and G on CBI medium. It was more difficult to recognize type G colonies on the medium because of their lack of lipase activity. Except for a few species of Clostridium, the growth of other obligate anaerobes and of the facultative anaerob

Helminthiasis is a common infection in both humans and other animal populations and negatively affects the health of the host, causing a range of morbidity and even mortality, especially in young people and those with weakened immune systems. A variety of diagnostic procedures with a number of modifications are available to identify the sources of infection and to assess the epidemiological situation, the effectiveness of parasite control programs, anthelmintic treatment, and the prevention of drug resistance. These can be simple and cheap methods - for example, stool smear examination - or mo

Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is the most common of the prostatitis syndromes. It is characterised by pelvic pain, with or without voiding symptoms. CP/CPPS accounts for 2 million office visits in the US alone. Recent epidemiological studies have shown that CP/CPPS can affect men at any age, including those in their 80s. The aetiology is unknown but proposals include infectious, autoimmune, neurologic and psychiatric causes. Men with CP/CPPS are much more likely to have had a past medical history of cardiovascular, neurologic, psychiatric or infectious disease (par

Annually, millions of people are affected by mosquito-borne Orthoflavivirus infections. These include diseases caused by the Dengue virus (DENV), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), and Zika virus (ZIKV), posing a formidable challenge to global public health. This research aims to explore the potential role of the Gut-Brain Axis (GBA) in Orthoflavivirus infection, particularly focusing on key metabolites involved in the process of viral invasion into the central nervous system. Given the advantages of metabolomics technology in metabolite identification. Therefore, we employed an untargeted Liq

UNLABELLED: In recent years, most studies on the gut microbiome have primarily focused on feces samples, leaving the microbial communities in the intestinal mucosa relatively unexplored. To address this gap, our study employed shotgun metagenomics to analyze the microbial compositions in normal rectal mucosa and matched feces from 20 patients with colonic polyps. Our findings revealed a pronounced distinction of the microbial communities between these two sample sets. Compared with feces, the mucosal microbiome contains fewer genera, with Burkholderia being the most discriminating genus betwee

As Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is closely related to the occurrence of gastric diseases such as chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric cancer, early detection of H. pylori is an urgent need. In this study, oligonucleotide probes conjugated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were used in combination with H. pylori-specific aptamers for the rapid detection of H. pylori in stool samples, which converted the method of detection from proteins to nucleic acids. Therefore, qualitative detection of H. pylori can be achieved by observing color changes through the aggregation (red to purple) or d

Coccidiosis represents a major driver in the economic performance of poultry operations, as coccidia control is expensive, and infections can result in increased feed conversion ratios, uneven growth rates, increased co-morbidities with pathogens such as Salmonella, and mortality within flocks. Shifts in broiler production to antibiotic-free strategies, increased attention on pre-harvest food safety, and growing incidence of anti-coccidial drug resistance has created a need for increased understanding of interventional efficacy and methods of coccidia control. Conventional methods to quantify

Cryptosporidium parvum is a zoonotic, protozoan parasite that causes potentially life-threatening diarrhea in the host and can be transmitted via the fecal-oral route. C. parvum can infect cattle and may be detected in their feces using a variety of tests. We compared the level of agreement, ease of procedure, and cost among PCR, lateral flow immunoassay, fluorescent antibody, and Kinyoun acid-fast stain direct smear tests. Over the course of 9 mo, 74 calf fecal samples were submitted and tested for C. parvum using all 4 tests. A Fleiss kappa value of 0.813 was obtained, indicating an excellen

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major public health concern, and dairy calves, including veal calves, are known reservoirs of resistant bacteria. To investigate AMR in the fecal microbial communities of veal calves, we conducted metagenomic sequencing of feces collected from individual animals on four commercial veal operations in Pennsylvania. Fecal samples from three randomly selected calves on each farm were collected soon after the calves were brought onto the farms (n = 12), and again, just before the calves from the same cohorts were ready for slaughter (n = 12). Results indicated th

BACKGROUND: Feline coronavirus (FCoV) infection is ubiquitous in multi-cat households. Responsible for the continuous presence are cats that are chronically shedding a high load of FCoV. The aim of the study was to determine a possible correlation between FCoV antibody titer and frequency and load of fecal FCoV shedding in cats from catteries.
METHODS: Four fecal samples from each of 82 cats originating from 19 German catteries were examined for FCoV viral loads by quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Additionally, antibody titers were determined by an immun

The widespread use of antibiotics in feed results in a large number of antibiotic residues in feces. Composting technology can degrade these residual antibiotics. A pilot-scale aerobic composting device was used to analyze the antibiotic residues and composting degradation characteristics of four types of feces (maggot manure, chicken manure, pig manure, and cow manure). Results showed that sulfonamides (SAs), fluoroquinolones (FQs), tetracycline (TCs), and macrolides (MAs) were the main antibiotics, and different type of feces had different dominant antibiotics. The contents of FQs and oxytet
