Closed-loop rehabilitation of age-related cognitive disorders.

Cognitive deficits are common in older adults, as a result of both the natural aging process and neurodegenerative disease. Although medical advancements have successfully prolonged the human lifespan, the challenge of remediating cognitive aging remains. The authors discuss the current state of cognitive therapeutic interventions and then present the need for development and validation of more powerful neurocognitive therapeutics. They propose that the next generation of interventions be implemented as closed-loop systems that target specific neural processing deficits, incorporate quantitati

The stress response in headache sufferers: physiological and psychological reactivity.

When examining headache sufferers' reactivity to stress, few studies attend to differing characteristics of the environment. In this study, we evaluated the influence of the clarity/ambiguity and positive/negative valence of an event on subjects' physiological and psychological reactivity. Migraine (n = 30), tension (n = 39), and control (n = 35) subjects participated in a laboratory experience in which they had to practice and then deliver a news story to a videocamera (similar to a newscaster on television). During this experience, they received performance feedback and were instructed to tr

Reliability-Aware Cross-Modal Learning Behavior Sensing for Student Cognitive Bias Recognition and Teaching-Oriented Psychological Risk Warning.

With the development of smart classrooms and digital learning platforms, multimodal learning behavior data provide a new sensing basis for understanding students' cognitive states and psychological risk warnings. However, existing educational data mining methods mainly focus on performance prediction, dropout warning, or surface-level emotion recognition, while continuous and interpretable modeling of deeper cognitive biases and related psychological risks remains insufficient. To address this issue, we propose MLBS-Net, a multimodal learning behavior sensing network for teaching feedback that

AI-mediated writing and durable learning: a psychological theory of calibration, bypassing and uptake.

Artificial intelligence (AI)-mediated writing provides a critical case for educational psychology because it reveals how learners regulate cognition, effort, confidence, motivation, and beliefs about competence when fluent external support is available. In English as a foreign language (EFL) writing, such support can correct grammar, reformulate sentences, suggest organization, and sustain revision dialogs with learners who may not have immediate access to human feedback. These affordances invite a tempting inference: better AI-assisted drafts indicate better learning. This Hypothesis and Theo

Correlation Between Self-Efficacy and Problem-Solving Behavioral Intentions Regarding Near Misses Among Nursing Interns: The Mediating Role of Psychological Safety.

BACKGROUND: A near miss is an error or event that is detected or corrected before reaching or harming the patient. Near-miss events among nursing interns may compromise patient safety and reflect challenges in clinical practice. Self-efficacy and psychological safety are important psychological factors that may influence problem-solving behavioral intentions regarding near misses. However, evidence on the relationship between these variables among nursing interns remains limited. This study aimed to explore the relationship between self-efficacy and problem-solving behavioral intentions regard

An examination of the impact of online feedback and social distance on the implicit self-identity of adolescents: behavioral and ERP evidence.

Adolescents' self-identity is shaped by online feedback's valence (positive/negative) and social distance (near/far). This study tested their interactive effects on implicit self-identity and neural correlates. Experiment 1 used an implicit association measure (D-score) to assess self-identity across ages. Participants received near (peer) or far (stranger) positive/negative feedback. Distant positive feedback reduced D-scores (weaker self-identity links) versus near positive feedback; negative feedback showed the opposite. Late adolescents had higher D-scores for near versus far feedback-indi

Developmental differences in value-directed remembering: effects of testing and feedback in adolescents and adults.

Value-directed remembering allows learners to selectively prioritize important information, but its development during adolescence remains incompletely understood. Both strategic and automatic processing mechanisms are thought to support value-directed remembering, with strategic processing enhancing both recollection and familiarity, and automatic processing primarily facilitating recollection. The present study examined how testing and feedback shape value-directed remembering in adolescents (13-15 years old) and young adults (19-21 years old) across two experiments. Results indicated that i

Alexithymia, cumulative feedback, and differential response patterns on the Iowa Gambling Task.

Although the role of emotional processing is central to contemporary models of risky decision making, to date the role of trait emotional understanding has not been explored experimentally in this context. The current experiment (N=326) explores the role of alexithymia with respect to performance on the standard Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and a version where cumulative financial feedback is obscured. Standard learning on the IGT was observed for those low in alexithymia. Those high in alexithymia learned to avoid disadvantageous decks over the first half of the task. However, over the later tria

Tree of Life Groups for Children and Young People With Long-Term Medical Conditions and Their Parents Led by Pre-Qualification Psychology Staff.

The Tree of Life group (Ncube, 2006) was designed to help children, young people (CYP), and adults who have experienced hard times or trauma to build resilience, restore hope, and connect with their strengths and social histories. A small number of publications have demonstrated a positive impact with CYP with long-term medical conditions (LTCs) (e.g., Casdagli et al., 2017) who are more likely to experience psychosocial challenges. In the context of increasing workforce pressures, the current study aimed to test if the positive results from previous studies could be replicated (1) with CYP's

Feedback-related negativity reflects omission of monetary gains: Evidence from ERP gambling study.

Feedback processing is an important aspect of learning. In the human brain, feedback processing is often examined by measuring an event-related potential, the feedback-related negativity component. Typically, the feedback-related negativity component is investigated by directly comparing gain with loss feedback randomized across trials; however, this method does not control for confounds associated with unexpected feedback. For this study we used a blocked design gambling task to investigate the sensitivity of feedback-related negativity to positive and negative feedback separately for gains a

Determinants of effective feedback on educational performance of faculty members based on their own experiences: a content analysis study.

BACKGROUND: Providing faculty members with feedback, as the last stage of the evaluation of their educational performance is of particular importance. Offering helpful information about strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats of their performance, feedback provision empowers both faculty members and education officials to improve the existing situation. The present study aimed to identify the determinants of effective feedback on educational performance of faculty members based on their own experiences. METHODS: This study employed conventional qualitative content analysis, with da

PROTOCOL: Multisource Feedback and Work Performance: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Multisource feedback (MSF) is widely used in performance management and leadership development, yet there is still no consensus on whether it predicts improvements in employee performance. This study presents a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis investigating whether the use of person-moderated MSF predicts changes in individual work performance. The review is guided by an integrative framework drawing on feedback intervention theory and existing MSF models. A systematic search and meta-analytic synthesis of the empirical literature will be conducted, and potential moderators o

The impact of precise feedback in AI vocal courses on learning outcomes: a chain mediation effect of skill mastery and self-efficacy.

INTRODUCTION: Policies such as the "New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan" emphasize the application of AI across the educational process, while the multidimensional nature and psychological mechanisms of learning outcomes in vocal education remain insufficiently explored. PURPOSE: This study explores the impact of precise feedback in AI vocal courses on learning outcomes and investigates the chained mediating roles of skill mastery and self-efficacy to uncover the underlying psychological mechanisms. METHODS: A pre-post experimental design with a control group was implemen

Psychobiological mechanisms underlying the mood benefits of meditation: A narrative review.

Psychological stressors can lead to distress and result in autonomic arousal and activation of a stress response. Ongoing or persistent stress can disrupt the stress response feedback mechanisms and result in elevated cortisol and pro-inflammatory cytokines which can cause damage to brain regions involved in the regulation of mood and emotion. We propose that the magnitude of the stress response experienced in response to psychological stressors depends on a number of modifiable psychological processes including an individual's level of self-compassion, dispositional mindfulness, tendency to r

Baro-Cybernetics Involvement.

Cybernetics is a transdisciplinary science which studies circular causal processes such as feedback and recursion. Its concepts are concordant with those of modern endocrinology. In this opinion piece, we focus on barocybernetics, viewing cybernetics through an obesity perspective. Baro-cybernetics may be defined as the transdisciplinary study of feedback mechanisms which help in weight homoeostasis, during health and disease. Baro- cybernetics includes not only basic sciences such as biochemistry and physiology, but the application of these concepts to psychology and pharmacology of obesity.

Modeling and estimating the feedback mechanisms among depression, rumination, and stressors in adolescents.

The systemic interactions among depressive symptoms, rumination, and stress are important to understanding depression but have not yet been quantified. In this article, we present a system dynamics simulation model of depression that captures the reciprocal relationships among stressors, rumination, and depression. Building on the response styles theory, this model formalizes three interdependent mechanisms: 1) Rumination contributes to 'keeping stressors alive'; 2) Rumination has a direct impact on depressive symptoms; and 3) Both 'stressors kept alive' and current depressive symptoms contrib

Haptic-payment: Exploring vibration feedback as a means of reducing overspending in mobile payment.

The proliferation of mobile payment applications in recent years has decoupled the physical act of paying from the consumption experience. Prior research suggests that this decreases the psychological sense of loss or 'pain' that consumers feel when making a purchase with more direct payment types (such as cash) and leads them to spend more money. To help address this issue, the present research explores, designs, and tests haptic vibration feedback configurations aimed at restoring the 'pain' of paying with cashless payment options (i.e., online and mobile payment). Counter-intuitively, the p

Cognitive Sex/Gender Differences and the Beliefs in Own Spatial Abilities.

Sex/gender differences in specific spatial tasks are well documented, with the male advantage in the Mental Rotations Test (MRT) being one of the largest effects reported in psychological research. Numerous potential contributing factors have been examined, with recent studies highlighting the importance of individuals' beliefs in their spatial abilities. However, no study has directly manipulated these self-perceptions to assess their causal impact on cognitive performance. The present study investigated whether randomized normative feedback could alter participants' levels of spatial anxiety
