Age-Related Differences in the One Target Advantage: Exploring the Impact of Augmented Sensory Feedback.

The one-target advantage (OTA) refers to faster execution of single-target movements compared to the same movement embedded in a two-target reaching sequence. While well documented in younger adults, little is known about OTA in older adults with age-related motor changes. This study examined whether augmented sensory feedback modulates goal-directed aiming during the OTA paradigm. Thirty right-handed participants (15 younger, 15 older adults) performed one- and two-target aiming tasks under vibrotactile (VT), auditory (A), and no-feedback (NF) conditions. Results showed that reaction time was

Electroencephalography Validation of Object Stiffness Discrimination via Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation for Prosthetic Sensory Feedback.

Currently, the surface electromyography has gained prominence in human-machine interface systems for prosthetic hand control. However, the absence of tactile feedback often affects their acceptability. To address this problem, this study proposes a closed-loop human-machine interaction system that employs transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation to reconstruct the hand-brain sensorimotor pathway. Dual-channel surface electromyography signals were synchronously captured from antagonistic muscle groups (flexors/extensors) and processed to generate control commands for the prosthetic hand. Thi

Predictive Feedback, Early Sensory Representations, and Fast Responses to Predicted Stimuli Depend on NMDA Receptors.

Learned associations between stimuli allow us to model the world and make predictions, crucial for efficient behavior (e.g., hearing a siren, we expect to see an ambulance and quickly make way). While there are theoretical and computational frameworks for prediction, the circuit and receptor-level mechanisms are unclear. Using high-density EEG, Bayesian modeling, and machine learning, we show that inferred "causal" relationships between stimuli and frontal alpha activity account for reaction times (a proxy for predictions) on a trial-by-trial basis in an audiovisual delayed match-to-sample tas

Intraneural sensory feedback restores grip force control and motor coordination while using a prosthetic hand.

OBJECTIVE: Tactile afferents in the human hand provide fundamental information about hand-environment interactions, which is used by the brain to adapt the motor output to the physical properties of the object being manipulated. A hand amputation disrupts both afferent and efferent pathways from/to the hand, completely invalidating the individual's motor repertoire. Although motor functions may be partially recovered by using a myoelectric prosthesis, providing functionally effective sensory feedback to users of prosthetics is a largely unsolved challenge. While past studies using invasive sti

Peripheral fatigue limits endurance exercise via a sensory feedback-mediated reduction in spinal motoneuronal output.

This study sought to determine whether afferent feedback associated with peripheral muscle fatigue inhibits central motor drive (CMD) and thereby limits endurance exercise performance. On two separate days, eight men performed constant-load, single-leg knee extensor exercise to exhaustion (85% of peak power) with each leg (Leg1 and Leg2). On another day, the performance test was repeated with one leg (Leg1) and consecutively (within 10 s) with the other/contralateral leg (Leg2-post). Exercise-induced quadriceps fatigue was assessed by reductions in potentiated quadriceps twitch-force from pre-

Experience of adults with upper-limb difference and their views on sensory feedback for prostheses: a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Upper-limb prostheses are regularly abandoned, in part due to the mismatch between user needs and prostheses performance. Sensory feedback is among several technological advances that have been proposed to reduce device abandonment rates. While it has already been introduced in some high-end commercial prostheses, limited data is available about user expectations in relation to sensory feedback. The aim of this study is thus to use a mixed methods approach to provide a detailed insight of users' perceptions and expectations of sensory feedback technology, to ensure the addition of

An Experimental Protocol for Evaluating Pulse Width Modulation Ranges of Evoked Tactile Sensory Feedback in Amputees.

The objective of this study is to develop an experimental protocol to define the range of modulation for different sensory modalities elicited by transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in amputees with evoked tactile sensation (ETS). Modulation ranges of sensory modalities, such as vibration, buzz, tingling etc., are essential for designing a coding strategy for incoming sensory information from prosthetic hands for each amputee. Here, the modulation ranges of different modalities in pulse width at fixed stimulus frequencies were evaluated. Four healthy subjects and three transradi

Staying in Touch: Toward the Restoration of Sensory Feedback in Hand Prostheses Using Peripheral Neural Stimulation.

Hand amputation is a traumatic event that dramatically and permanently changes the life of any person who undergoes one. After surgery, the amputee requires a prosthetic device to perform activities of daily living-in particular, tasks requiring grasping and manipulation functions. According to the Washington, D.C.-based Amputee Coalition, there are 1.9 million amputees who use limb prosthetic services and products, and it is estimated that, among them, 500,000 are upper-limb amputees, with approximately 185,000 new amputations every year (www.amputee-coalition.org). Gaze stabilization in chronic vestibular-loss and in cerebellar ataxia: interactions of feedforward and sensory feedback mechanisms.

During gaze shifts, humans can use visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive feedback, as well as feedforward mechanisms, for stabilization against active and passive head movements. The contributions of feedforward and sensory feedback control, and the role of the cerebellum, are still under debate. To quantify these contributions, we increased the head moment of inertia in three groups (ten healthy, five chronic vestibular-loss and nine cerebellar-ataxia patients) while they performed large gaze shifts to flashed targets in darkness. This induces undesired head oscillations. Consequently, both

Soft Nanomembrane Sensor-Enabled Wearable Multimodal Sensing and Feedback System for Upper-Limb Sensory Impairment Assistance.

Sensory rehabilitation in pediatric patients with traumatic spinal cord injury is challenging due to the ongoing development of their nervous systems. However, these sensory problems often result in nonuse of the impaired limb, which disturbs impaired limb rehabilitation and leads to overuse of the contralateral limb and other physical or psychological issues that may persist. Here, we introduce a soft nanomembrane sensor-enabled wearable glove system that wirelessly delivers a haptic sensation from the hand with tactile feedback responses for sensory impairment assistance. The smart glove sys

Sensory feedback-dependent coding of arm position in local field potentials of the posterior parietal cortex.

Although multisensory integration is crucial for sensorimotor function, it is unclear how visual and proprioceptive sensory cues are combined in the brain during motor behaviors. Here we characterized the effects of multisensory interactions on local field potential (LFP) activity obtained from the superior parietal lobule (SPL) as non-human primates performed a reaching task with either unimodal (proprioceptive) or bimodal (visual-proprioceptive) sensory feedback. Based on previous analyses of spiking activity, we hypothesized that evoked LFP responses would be tuned to arm location but would

The influence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy on local postural muscle and central sensory feedback balance control.

Poor balance control and increased fall risk have been reported in people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Traditional body sway measures are unable to describe underlying postural control mechanism. In the current study, we used stabilogram diffusion analysis to examine the mechanism under which balance is altered in DPN patients under local-control (postural muscle control) and central-control (postural control using sensory cueing). DPN patients and healthy age-matched adults over 55 years performed two 15-second Romberg balance trials. Center of gravity sway was measured using a

Biomimetic Intraneural Sensory Feedback Enhances Sensation Naturalness, Tactile Sensitivity, and Manual Dexterity in a Bidirectional Prosthesis.

Peripheral intraneural stimulation can provide tactile information to amputees. However, efforts are still necessary to identify encoding strategy eliciting percepts that are felt as both natural and effective for prosthesis control. Here we compared the naturalness and efficacy of different encoding strategies to deliver neural stimulation to trans-radial amputees implanted with intraneural electrodes. Biomimetic frequency modulation was perceived as more natural, while amplitude modulation enabled better performance in tasks requiring fine identification of the applied force. Notably, the op

Temporal and spatial characteristics of bone conduction as non-invasive haptic sensory feedback for upper-limb prosthesis.

Bone conduction is a promising haptic feedback modality for upper-limb prosthesis users, however, its potential and characteristics as a non-invasive feedback modality have not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to establish the temporal and spatial characteristics of non-invasive bone conduction as a sensory feedback interface for upper-limb prostheses. Psychometric human-subject experiments were conducted on three bony landmarks of the elbow, with a vibrotactile transducer affixed to each to provide the stimulus. The study characterized the temporal domain by testing perception t

Contribution of sensory feedback to plantar flexor muscle activation during push-off in adults with cerebral palsy.

Exaggerated sensory activity has been assumed to contribute to functional impairment following lesion of the central motor pathway. However, recent studies have suggested that sensory contribution to muscle activity during gait is reduced in stroke patients and children with cerebral palsy (CP). We investigated whether this also occurs in CP adults and whether daily treadmill training is accompanied by alterations in sensory contribution to muscle activity. Seventeen adults with CP and 12 uninjured individuals participated. The participants walked on a treadmill while a robotized ankle-foot or

Assessing Interstimulus Interval and Waveform Effects on Vibrotactile Pattern Recognition on the Forearm for Transfemoral Prosthetic Sensory Feedback.

Providing reliable sensory feedback is one of the most challenging aspects of transfemoral prosthetics, motivating the development of intuitive vibrotactile interfaces capable of conveying information about limb position in real-time. The aim of this study was to develop a vibrotactile feedback prototype and examine which interstimulus intervals (ISIs) and vibration waveforms might best enhance recognition of sequential tactile patterns. The results will be used to inform the development of a prototype to be tested on participants with transfemoral amputation where prosthetic feedback is provi

Sensory feedback to ankle plantar flexors is not exaggerated during gait in spastic hemiplegic children with cerebral palsy.

It is still widely believed that exaggerated stretch reflexes and increased muscle tone in ankle plantar flexors contribute to reduced ankle joint movement during gait in children with cerebral palsy (CP). However, no study has directly measured stretch reflex activity during gait in these children. We investigated sensory feedback mechanisms during walking in 20 CP children and 41 control children. Stretch responses in plantar flexor muscles evoked in stance showed an age-related decline in control but not CP children. In swing the responses were abolished in control children, but significant

A Novel Sensory Feedback Approach to Facilitate Both Predictive and Corrective Control of Grasping Force in Myoelectric Prostheses.

Reliable force control is especially important when using myoelectric upper-limb prostheses as the force defines whether an object will be firmly grasped, damaged, or dropped. It is known from human motor control that the grasping of non-disabled subjects is based on a combination of anticipation and feedback correction. Inspired by this insight, the present study proposes a novel approach to provide artificial sensory feedback to the user of a myoelectric prosthesis using vibrotactile stimulation to facilitate both predictive and corrective processes characteristic of grasping in non-disabled

Sensory Reinforcement Feedback Using Movement-Controlled Smartphone App Facilitates Movement in Infants with Neurodevelopmental Disorders: A Pilot Study.

New wearable technology opens new possibilities for low-cost, easily accessible home-based interventions as a supplement to typical clinical rehabilitation therapy. In this pilot study, we tested a new interactive adjustable Feedback training system on 14 infants at high risk of cerebral palsy between 2 and 12 months of age to facilitate increased movements. The system consists of four wireless motion sensors placed on the infant's limbs. Inertial sensors track the infant's movements which control auditory and visual stimuli that act as motivational feedback. A 15 min usage of the Feedback tra
