period-Regulated Feeding Behavior and TOR Signaling Modulate Survival of Infection.

Most metazoans undergo dynamic, circadian-regulated changes in behavior and physiology. Currently, it is unknown how circadian-regulated behavior impacts immunity against infection. Two broad categories of defense against bacterial infection are resistance, control of microbial growth, and tolerance, control of the pathogenic effects of infection. Our study of behaviorally arrhythmic Drosophila circadian period mutants identified a novel link between nutrient intake and tolerance of infection with B. cepacia, a bacterial pathogen of rising importance in hospital-acquired infections. We found t

State-dependent modulation of feeding behavior by proopiomelanocortin-derived beta-endorphin.

Feeding behavior can be divided into appetitive and consummatory phases, differing in neural substrates and effects of deprivation. Opioids play an important role in the appetitive aspects of feeding, but they also have acute stimulatory effects on food consumption. Because the opioid peptide beta-endorphin is co-synthesized and released with melanocortins from proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neuronal terminals, we examined the physiological role of beta-endorphin in feeding and energy homeostasis using a strain of mutant mice with a selective deficiency of beta-endorphin. Male beta-endorphin-defic

Central gastrin inhibits feeding behavior and food passage in neonatal chicks.

The gastrin/cholecystokinin (CCK) family is recognized as the principal family of hormones involved in regulation of the gastrointestinal tract CCK is recognized as a satiety hormone in mammalian species, but it has been suggested that gastrin rather CCK may have an important role in controlling feeding behavior in the neonatal chick through a poorly developed blood brain barrier. So far, however, there is no direct evidence that central gastrin inhibits food intake in neonatal chicks. The aim of this study was to elucidate whether central administration of gastrin 1) inhibits feeding behavior

Effect on rat feeding behavior of two selective D2 dopamine agonists.

B-HT 958 and SND 919, two selective agonists at D2 dopamine receptors, were examined for their influence on the feeding behavior of fasted rats. When food intake was determined in the rat's individual home cage, it was found to be reduced by both drugs at low sedative doses during the first hour after treatment and by SND 919 at the highest dose (which also elicits stereotypy) only 24 h later. However, SND 919 and B-HT 958 had no significant effect on feeding evaluated according to the X-maze and tube feeding tests. Analysis of the results, seen in the context of other behavioral signs produce

The behavioral function of feeding problems as assessed by the questions about behavioral function (QABF).

Differences in subscale scores on the questions about behavioral function (QABF) were assessed for participants identified with pica, rumination, food stealing, food refusal, and mealtime behavior problems (e.g., aggression, self-injurious behavior). The QABF was administered to informants for 125 individuals identified with problematic feeding behaviors and mental retardation primarily in the severe to profound range. Results of the nonparametric analyses yielded significant differences across the escape, nonsocial, physical, and tangible subscales of the QABF. Behavior functions most commonl

Effects of feeding live yeast at 2 dosages on performance and feeding behavior of dairy cows under heat stress.

The objectives were to evaluate the effects of feeding different amounts of supplemental live yeast (LY) on performance and digestion of cows under heat stress. Sixty Holstein cows, 27 multiparous and 33 primiparous, were blocked by parity and milk yield in the first 20 d in milk (DIM) and randomly assigned to receive 0, 0.5, or 1.0 g/d of LY, resulting in daily intakes of 0, 14.2, and 37.6 billion cells, respectively, of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain CNCM I-1077 from 30 to 107 DIM. Cows were milked twice daily, dry matter intake (DMI) and milk yield were measured daily, and milk components,

Feeding behavior and agonistic interactions at the feed bunk are associated with hyperketonemia and metritis diagnosis in dairy cattle.

Hyperketonemia and metritis are common in the weeks after calving. This study tested if feeding and agonistic behaviors before calving were associated with the development of hyperketonemia (HYK) and metritis after calving. Holstein cows on 5 commercial farms were monitored for HYK (as identified using a cow-side β-hydroxybutyrate test) and metritis (using visual and olfactory assessment of vaginal discharge); both tests were conducted twice a week for 2 wk. Based on this assessment, we selected a balanced sample of cows that remained healthy (no signs of illness; n = 20), cows diagnosed with

Effects of fatty acid supplements on feed intake, and feeding and chewing behavior of lactating dairy cows.

Saturated and unsaturated fatty acid supplements (FS) were evaluated for effects on feed intake, meal patterns, and chewing behavior. Eight ruminally and duodenally cannulated cows were used in a replicated 4 x 4 Latin square design experiment with 21-d periods. Treatments were control and a linear substitution of 2.5% fatty acids from supplemented saturated FS (SAT; prilled, hydrogenated free fatty acids) for partially unsaturated FS (UNS; calcium soaps of long-chain fatty acids). All rations contained identical forage and concentrate components including 37.2% forage and 13.5% cottonseed. Dr

Assessing the effects of stress on feeding behaviors in laboratory mice.

Stress often affects eating behaviors, increasing caloric intake in some individuals and decreasing it in others. The determinants of feeding responses to stress are unknown, in part because this issue is rarely studied in rodents. We focused our efforts on the novelty-suppressed feeding (NSF) assay, which uses latency to eat as readout of anxiety-like behavior, but rarely assesses feeding per se. We explored how key variables in experimental paradigms - estrous and diurnal cyclicity, age and duration of social isolation, prandial state, diet palatability, and elevated body weight - influence

Role of diet and feeding in normal and stereotypic behaviors in horses.

This article reviews the effects of diet on equine feeding behavior and feeding patterns, before considering the evidence that diet affects reactivity in horses. A growing body of work suggests that fat- and fiber-based diets may result in calmer patterns of behavior, and possible mechanisms that may underpin these effects are discussed. In contrast, there is little evidence that herbal- or tryptophan-containing supplements influence equine behavior in any measurable way. The role of diet in the development of abnormal oral behaviors, particularly the oral stereotypy crib-biting, is also revie

Feeding problems, sleep disturbances, and negative behaviors in a toddler.

Tiffany, a 3-year-old girl, was referred to the developmental and behavioral pediatrics service for evaluation of significant and persistent negative behaviors associated with refusal to eat at meal time and constant snacking during the past 3 months. She lost 2 pounds, but her weight for her height was at the 50th percentile. Her mother indicated that Tiffany had frequent night awakenings (>10) and late sleep onset (between 12:00 and 1:00 a.m.). Her mother described her as being "easily frustrated," getting upset and angry very quickly. Tiffany was identified at an early intervention program

Behavioral assessment of feeding problems of individuals with severe disabilities.

As many as 80% of the individuals with severe or profound mental retardation exhibit feeding problems. Although behavioral interventions have been used to treat these problems, no assessment procedure for determining a functional relationship between a person's acceptance of food and the type and texture of that food has been reported. The purpose of this study was to test a behavioral assessment procedure for a feeding problem of limited intake. Five individuals with severe or profound mental retardation were fed 10 to 12 types of foods with one or more textures. Behavioral categories of acce

Effects of anorectic drugs on the topography of feeding behavior in baboons.

Food intake of six adult male baboons (Papio c. anubis) was monitored during daily experimental sessions lasting 22 hr. Food was available under a chain schedule with two-components. After completion of the first "procurement component" response requirement, access to food, i.e., a meal, became available under the second "consumption component" during which each response produced a 1-g food pellet. After 10 min in which no response occurred, the consumption component was terminated. When given p.o. 45 to 60 min before the start of the daily session, anorectic drugs, with the exception of (+/-)

Parallel gut-to-brain pathways orchestrate feeding behaviors.

The caudal nucleus of the solitary tract (cNTS) in the brainstem serves as a hub for integrating interoceptive cues from diverse sensory pathways. However, the mechanisms by which cNTS neurons transform these signals into behaviors remain debated. We analyzed 18 cNTS-Cre mouse lines and cataloged the dynamics of nine cNTS cell types during feeding. We show that Th+ cNTS neurons encode esophageal mechanical distension and transient gulp size via vagal afferent inputs, providing quick feedback regulation of ingestion speed. By contrast, Gcg+ cNTS neurons monitor intestinal nutrients and cumulati

Direct, continuous behavioral analysis of drug action on feeding.

Analysis of rodent feeding behavior during the study of anorectic drugs reveals that contextual variables such as type of food, drug, environment, and physiological state influence food intake. Temporal changes in behavior can signal the onset of a feeding modulation process, as is the case with anorectic drugs acting on distinct neurochemical mechanisms that change temporal behavioral profiles. Comparing the effects of anorectic agents in controlled animal assays can identify potential therapeutic drugs that may influence human eating behavior. This unit specifies the materials and procedures

Inhibition of feeding and hoarding behaviors by phenylpropanolamine in the adult rat.

The mechanism by which phenylpropanolamine (PPA) reduces feeding and body lipid is unknown. To determine if malaise associated with PPA treatment mediates its anorexic action, the present study compared the actions of PPA on feeding and hoarding behavior with that of lithium chloride at dose levels that induce comparable conditioned taste aversions. Adult male rats were injected (IP) 30 minutes prior to a test of feeding and hoarding behavior with either 0.9% saline, 32 mg/kg lithium chloride or with 10 mg/kg, 20 mg/kg or 40 mg/kg PPA. Although 32 mg/kg lithium chloride was without effect on e

Seasonal relationship between liver abscesses and feeding behavior in crossbred beef cattle.

This retrospective study evaluated how feeding behavior during the last 60 to 90 days on feed related to liver abscess prevalence in crossbred beef steers finished in summer or fall. Liver abscesses were scored at slaughter as a binary trait with 10.8% prevalence, and individual feed intake data were collected from 1,114 steers using an automated feeding system. Feeding behavior traits included daily dry matter intake, eating time, meal frequency, meal size, meal length, and variability measures. Meals were defined by grouping all feeding events that occurred within 49 min of each other into a
